A Day In The Life
Thunderstorms and hard rain woke me at 5:30am, so I stayed-up, watered/fed Murphy, and checked the weather and news sites, to see if I'd get any outdoor work done over at Dad's; it didn't look good for today or Saturday. There are several indoor projects to work on with him. I made Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, several French Toast-Grilled Cheese w/ Bacon Sandwiches, Hash Browns/Fries and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from whole, freshly-ground beans) with my trusty Chemex® Drip System. I was stuffed. That'd be my main meal for today. The large t-storms continued to move-up from the south-southwest and overspread the York area. Upon inspection, 3 of the 4 newly-installed Velux skylights, showed water stain signs of leaking again, from the overnight and morning rain. Damn. I called the CHCA Property Mgr and notified him, again.
At 9am, I began making a killer Yankee Pot Roast, with a beautifully-marbled, 4½-lb USDA Prime Black Angus cut, in the 5qt CrockPot® with chopped scallions, peeled whole baby Vidalia Onions, peeled whole baby potatoes, peeled baby carrots,
With all the rain we've just had, and will be getting tonite/tomorrow morning, working outdoors at Dad's on Saturday & Sunday won't be an option; we'll do a couple of indoor projects instead, and I'll get his Jeep in top shape, cosmetically. I put my Sunday morning food shopping list together, listened to the morning's missed Chris Plante Podcast replay in the afternoon, and to the Mark Levin Show, from 6-9pm. By 9:30, more t-storms hit the area, I'd had enough and packed-it-in, for the day,
Murphy woke me at 5:30am on Saturday, needing his usual watering/feeding routine, and I accommodated after some cold water in-my-face to wake-up. Still dark outside at 5:50am, already 72°F and cloudy, I had some Red Grapefruit Sections, and decided to make a big "Stack of French Toast", a ½-lb of Bacon and coffee. The Condo's rain gauge read 3¼" from the past 2 days' t-storms. I scanned the weather and news sites, for the next few days, loaded-up the Jeep with the 3 large containers of Yankee Pot Roast I'd made yesterday, and headed-over to Dad's by 9:30am. He had a really nice, almost-unused, external Seagate 500Gb drive, which I set-up for a weekly back-up and system image (Start->All Programs->Maintenance->Backup and Restore) of his HP Laptop WIN-7 Pro's data & OS. It was too wet to re-seed the lawn areas, so I'd stop back tomorrow to work on the attached 2-car garage and his Jeep, until things dried-out. I left by 12:30pm.
After watering/feeding Murphy, I made a Reuben Sandwich & Fries, sorted through and rotated-out some canned food stocks in the basement storeroom, finalized tomorrow morning's food shopping list, planned-out next week's schedule, worked on menus for the next 2-3 weeks, and listened to several missed Mark Levin Show Rewinds from past weeks. A final watering/feeding for Murphy, resetting my weekly back-up and system image (Start->All Programs->Maintenance->Backup and Restore) to an earlier date and time, and I quit for the day around 10pm.
Up at 5:30am on Sunday, I took care of Murphy's water/food needs, grabbed a quick breakfast of Soft-Boiled Eggs in a bowl, w/ Bacon, and coffee, started the bi-weekly computer scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free, got my week's mail from the CHCA Community Mailbox, and left for Weis Market at 7:15am. That chore done, I drove home, unpacked, checked the scan, shut-down and headed to Dad's to work on a project. It was still way too wet to work in
I made Chicken Cordon Bleu w/ Dijon Gravy, Roasted Asparagus and Wild Buttered Rice for a "late lunch". After 1½-yrs, I found that I was running low on filters for my Chemex Coffee System, so I ordered another 400 FC-100 Folded Circles. I gave Murphy his final night's watering/feeding, and closed-down around 9:30pm.
Nice to sleep-in until 6;30am on Monday, although I had a bunch of things to do and places to go. After Murphy's morning watering/feeding, I made Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, Garlic Grits & Eggs, some Hash Browns, ½-lb of Bacon and coffee; my daily shower felt great and finally woke-me-up. Monday is the usual change bed linens, do more laundry, get the garbage ready for curbside pick-up, and begin working a long list of "errands" which'll span the week, day. I got home around 1:30pm, made a BLT w/ Fried Egg & Fries, snacked on Red Seedless Grapes, and finished-up the Condo chores. After catching-up on the morning's missed Chris Plante Podcast replay, and to the Mark Levin Show, from 6-9pm, I quit for the night.

Back home by 1pm, I called Dad to talk for a while, made a Grilled Ham, Swiss, Tomato, Lettuce, Sliced Pepper, Egg & Olive Salad on Rye Bread Sandwich, French Fries w/ Catsup and Garden Bean Salad for lunch. Several units in my choice firearms collection needed oiling and polishing – I take exceptional care of all my equipment – so I spent a couple of hours field-stripping them, and doing what was needed. Murphy snuck out of my inadvertently left-open hallway/garage door, and I had to chase him down through the Condo Complex. That was fun and my exercise for the day. An automated call from my DR's office reminded me that I had a Thursday 11:30am appointment, which was already on my semi-busy calendar. I could get another 3 errands done that day in Southern York County, as that Doc's office is in Shrewsbury, near the Maryland line. There was also a pile of paperwork which needed separate files and filing in my makeshift DR Office. By then, some nasty t-storms were approaching the area once again, it was 6pm, and time for the Mark Levin Show, from 6-9pm, and time for bed, right afterward.
A restless night, up 3x, watering/feeding Murphy at 3:30am on Wednesday, and back to sleep for only another hour. I got up at 4:45, splashed some cold water in my face, had some Del Monte® Red Grapefruit Sections, scanned the weather and news sites, checked email, and read two interesting articles about "Coffee Pour-Overs" and "The Japanese Art of
I met with the skylight regional rep and his tech crew, and they'd checked/repaired the 3 of 4 leaky units. I'll be closely-monitoring the units during/after the next t-storm, and will definitely "let them know" if there are anymore moisture problems. I left for 5 quick errands in the East York area, and then drove to Dad's for a visit and some remedial work on his HP Laptop. It'd apparently been hit by a RootKit Virus, and I got rid of that with Norton Power Eraser, and did a final system scan with MalwareBytes AntiMalware: 100% clean again. I got home around 12:30pm, made a Turkey Breast BLT, Deviled Eggs and Onion Rings in my DeLonghi Stainless Steel Deep Fryer. I finally got a decent night's sleep, and slept-in until 6;30am on Thursday. Murphy needed watering/feeding, I had several messages on my cellphone from last night to return, had some Del Monte® Red Grapefruit Sections, made a quick Breakfast and coffee. Dave called to tell me that my 3 newly-repaired/replaced/newly-constructed window/door screens were ready for delivery, the Dr's office had called 2x to remind me of the 11:30am app't, and a former customer had left a message asking for some marketing help in his new business. I scanned the news and weather sites – the weather idiots can't accurately tell us what the weather will be tomorrow, but they're now predicting the coming Winter weather? – to see what was happening. 2 of the 3 screens arrived at 9:30am, and I installed them, doing some needed clean-up on the north-facing backdoor. The 3rd screen had to be custom-built on-site, so Dave and his helper would be back after 1:30pm to do that. I left for my app't and errands in Southern York County, around 10:45am.
It was a really beautiful day' "severe clear", as the pilots call it. 78°F, low humidity and a gentle breeze. I could take Summer days like this, every day. I got thru my appointed rounds, made a couple of extra stops at local farm produce stands to see and buy their fresh produce,
I prepared and baked-off a batch of 8 Breaded & Almond-Crusted Flounder Filets for Dad and me, fed/watered Murphy, opened-up the Condo's windows & doors to air-it-out, and settled-in with the Mark Levin Show from 6-9pm, while writing-out some checks for bills. No, I don't do online banking; too risky. The August-September Condo Budget needed adjusting, with some new and unexpected expenses, and I worked on the 4th Quarter Budget. Tomorrow starts a new, fresh week for the "Journal", and I'm hoping that the weather cooperates a little so I can get some yardwork done at Dad's on either Saturday or Sunday. I closed-down at 9:30, for the night. C'mon, Murphy...
Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
