As the colder weather descended upon the Mid-Atlantic Region, after kicking-butt in the Great Plains, Midwest and Ohio Valley Regions, we felt the rain, freezing rain/sleet, of what those Denver folks got a 'taste' of, on Friday and Saturday. Blizzards; yikes! I don't need or want them, darnit. Reason #6 why I don't fly anymore. Wisconsin also got hammered, from a separate snow and ice storm. We're ovedue, here in the Mid-Atlantic, as I reckon.
Locally, gas prices at the pump, have risen yet 10¢-plus, just this past week alone, here in the York (PA) area. Unleaded Regular is now at $2.49/gal. Unleaded Plus is now at $2.59/gal. And Unleaded Premium is now at $2.79/gal. Both diesel and kerosene are wavering around $2.85/gal. Home heating oil has replaced gasoline, for the coming Winter months, and the glut of crude oil on the market, is now gone, as refinery production has finally caught-up with available supplies. Reach deeper into your pockets, my friend.
All of my Landscape Crews, Foreman, Designer and GC&N Staff are now laid-off for the Winter months, except my master-mason, Seth, who is finishing-up an extensive hand-cut, two-sided, double-stacked-stone wall job (75-80ft x 3ft), down in northern Maryland. The job's parameters have changed considerably from the original specs and estimate, and will come in at several thousand dollars over budget, thanks to the owners' changing of the original specs. They've been informed, and have no problem with that, because of our quality work and beautiful end-product. Once Seth's finished, and I've billed the job out, I won't be seeing the Lscp Crews until late February or March, depending upon the weather. I do miss the GC&N Staff and Landscape Crews for the few Winter months, as the GC&N Center is desolate and barren until the 15-20 tractor-trailer loads of fresh, new nursery stock begin arriving, and we prepare for The 17th Open House and get the GC&N Complex back to "life", once again. Coming upon my 17th season, you'd think I'd be used to it all, but I do miss all the people and their various personalities. Yet, I need that period of "R&R", since I don't vacation in the tropics or Europe, or wherever it is that many "Winter-over". Unlike those "elite", I'm just a "common American plebeian" and feel more comfortable here in America, than overseas or in a turd-world country/continent, wasting my hard-earned dollars in a foreign land, which hates Americans. No thanks; I'll stay here in America.
I won't even go into how bad the traffic was on Friday evening, on my way home from work, and all day Saturday and Sunday. It would be the understatement of the year. Needless to say, I severely limited my 2 or 3 driving trips to just around the immediate area.
D**** called just after 1PM, on Saturday, and "was on fire", about a new "elder care" project she was working on, and she sounded great and full of enthusiasm, for the project. I haven't heard her sounding that good, in a long while, IIRC. Bravo, D****! (You know who you are, kiddo!)
I saw The Weather Channel's warning when I got up at 6am, to feed the cats, on Sunday. Big storm in Gulf heading north and east, heavy rains, changing to sleet and show, 2-5" possible accumulation, Monday and Tuesday. Yuk. Back to sleep until 11:30am, then a nice leisurely brunch. Coffee, a couple of grilled-cheese sandwiches, and a large bowl of tomato soup (for dunking the sandwiches!): "comfort food", and all is better. Still, that possible snowstorm looks ominous for late Monday and into Tuesday. We just need 2-3 more days to finish that stacked stonewall job in Maryland... please?! In a few hours, the "Winter Storm Warning" was cancelled and changed to simply, 'rain'. Warmer, southern air was being pushed ahead of the massive storm system, and all we got was cold rain, thankfully.
My favorite Talk Radio Station? Even though I have several Web-streaming/ AM Radio stations, in the York (PA) area, I prefer KFMB AM-760 Radio, 7 days a week, at 6pm ("Best Of" on Sat-Sun), for The Michael Savage Show, of course. Yet, Savage is an idiot, who thinks that so-called 'radical islam' is to blame, and not iSLAM, which is subhuman murderous garbage, shit, trash, filth and pig-scum. He still hasn't 'gotten it', either.
I went over to Mom & Dad's for Monday's Christmas Day Dinner, and we had a spiral-cut, pre-cooked, bone-in, Lancaster Cty (PA) Kunzler Ham, au-gratin potatoes, peas, fruit salad and Mom's legendary fresh-baked, oatmeal-raisin cookies, and local Allegro® Vino. I brought back some of the delicious ham for my two condo cats, and they had their little Christmas feast, too, as they do on Thanksgiving, Easter and New Year. Personally, I think the Heavenly Ham is far, far superior to anyother ham I've ever eaten, and that's what we'll be having next Christmas.
All of a sudden, my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo's overhead-console, operational-warning light — *Low Coolant Level* — was coming-on, and I decided to do something quickly, rather than wait for my scheduled January 3rd, 2007, service appointment. I stopped at a local Rutter's Farm Store, and got a 1gal jug of anti-freeze, mixed half of it with an equal quantity of tap water, and poured it into the Jeep's cooling system reservoir. Problem solved. Engine temps dropped 20-30°F, back into normal operating range.
My condo's ComCast Cable Modem (1.5up/ 3.0down), went south on Saturday afternoon, so there was little-to-no-service until Tuesday morning, when I called their online tech dept at 8am. I'd already unplugged and bypassed my Asante router, and the tech guy suggested coming in to pick-up a new CM box, since they wouldn't be able to scheduled a service call until around Jan 2nd! Yikes! I made the 22-mile round-trip in on early Monday morning, installed the new CM at home, had a different tech guy on the phone, "provision" it — register the new CM's MAC# and install it into their database — and once again drove the non-working unit back — another 22-mile rt — to avoid the pending $100 deposit they'd placed upon the returnable, dead unit. ("Can't have 2 modems out to one owner, when you're only paying for one".) After installing it, it immediately-worked just fine and dandy. I then drove another 14 miles to work, getting in around 11:30am. By then, I'd "had a bellyfull" of aggravation for the day, and was ready for some sleep, on the couch, infront of the fireplace. (((Just kidding!))) Now, if I can just remember how to re-install the router, correctly, it'll be a perfect world. Ha.
It was snowing slightly on the way into work, on Wednesday morning, as some squalls were blowing through. Almost January 1st, and *no snow yet*, is very, very unusual for this area. The Farmer's Almanac is *batting near-zero*, right now.
Schools are "closed this week", between Christmas and New Year? Yep; they are. To their own shame and detriment. Hmmmmm, not when I was in grade school, IIRC. Wimps all, today. Pathetic kids getting way too much time off, and their so-called teachers, as well.
