for most of human history, men and women have derived their moral dimension of life from the family and religion. Both of those are now dead or dying in the West under the influence of its new moral and ethical system. That system is one that we know in its various forms as the left.
The left can be summed up as moral materialism. It is a secular religion that claims to add a moral dimension to materialism. Its obsessions are largely economic, from its early class warfare focus to its modern environmentalism. Even its racial politics code class warfare by skin color.
Kill off religion and what do you have left? The answer can be seen in China. You're left with materialism and family interests.. Cast off the shackles of the family for individualistic consumerism and you're left with nothing except materialism as can be seen in any major Western city.
Modern urban man is much too "smart" for religion. At least his own. He wants to add an ethical dimension to life without having to believe in anything except the sense of fairness that he already has, but which he does not realize is not nearly as valid objectively as it is subjectively in his inner emotional reality.
And that is what the left is. It strips away everything except that egotistical sense that things should be run more fairly with predictably unfair results.
Liberalism, and the milder flavors of the left, provide a permission slip for materialism by elevating it through political activism. This is the philosophical purpose of environmentalism's green label. It tells you that you are a good person for buying something and soothes the moral anxieties of an urban class with no coherent moral system except the need to impose an ethical order on the consumerism that defined their childhood, their adolescence and their adult life.
Those most in need of the moral system of materialism are the descendants of the displaced, whether by immigration to the United States or migration within the United States from rural to urban areas, who have become detached from a large extended family structure that once sustained them.
Their grandparents had already loosened their grip on religion and as the family disintegrated, materialism took its place. Their grandparents worked hard to provide for their children, but the children no longer saw maintaining the family as a moral activity. Sometimes they didn't even bother with a family. They became lonely individuals looking for a collective. A virtual political family.
Liberalism fills the missing space once inhabited by religion and the family. It provides a moral and ethical system as religion did and the accompanying sense of purpose and its state institutions replace and supplant the family. It does both of these things destructively and badly as its institutions forever try to patch social problems created by the disintegration of the family and its ideas provide too few people with a sense of purpose of a meaningful life.
And yet it isn't entirely to blame for this state of affairs. The left has actively tried to destroy the family and religion, but the American liberal was until recently less guilty on both charges. His main crime was collaborating with the left while refusing to acknowledge its destructive aims. The process by which the displacement of liberal ideas and their replacement by the ideas of the far left is nearly complete. The American liberal is now an aging relic. In his place is the resentful radical.
The process that led to this state of affairs isn't the left's fault either. Even if it's not for lack of trying. In some ways the left isn't the problem, it's a symptom of the problem. Its ability to fundamentally transform people is limited. The transformation that has occurred is because of the choices that people have been led into making trading religion and family for a dead end materialism. Those choices evolved organically from the natural direction of society and technology.
And into that empty space, the left came. It dominates because there is nothing else to fill that space. It can only be truly resisted by cultural groups that have maintained hold of family and religion. Without that sense of purpose, there is only the endless baffled retreat of the Republican Party.
Liberalism appeals more to the middle class and the upper class because it is a religion of materialism. It makes very little sense to those who don't have material things. The underclass might embrace the harsher populism of the left, but shows little interest in its larger collectivist philosophy. The underclass is losing family and religion at a faster rate than the upper class, but it clings to what it has and finds meaning in it. It may be nakedly materialistic, but it doesn't believe that it is too smart for religion or too individualistic for family. It has many flaws, but arrogance isn't one of them.
Ennobling consumerism is a difficult task. The left doesn't come anywhere close to succeeding at it. Instead it makes it more expensive and raises the entry barriers for everything by working to eliminate cheap food, cheap household goods and cheap everything. It's a class issue.
Why does the left really hate Walmart? It doesn't really have a lot to do with unions and has a lot to do with class. Walmart's crime is industrial. It's the crime of the factory and the supermarket and every means of mass production and consumption. It makes cheap products too readily available to the masses. Liberals like to believe that they oppose consumerism, but what they really want to do is raise the entry levels to the lifestyle. Liberal consumerism is all about upselling ethics.
When tangible goods become too easy to produce, you add value through intangibles. The fair trade food tastes the same as non-fair trade food. Organic, a category with a debatable meaning, doesn't really provide that much more value. And environmental labels are worth very little. And yet the average product at Whole Foods is covered in so many "ethical liberal" labels that it's hard to figure out what it even is.
Intangible value is all about class. And class is all about creating barriers to entry.
Liberalism has become a revolt against the middle class that its grandparents struggled to reach, a rejection of their "materialism" while substituting the "ethical materialism" of liberalism in its place that envisions a much smaller upper and middle class that derives its wealth and power not from hard work in the private sector, but highly profitable social justice volunteerism in the public sector.
An American Dream of universal prosperity has been pitted against the left's dream of a benevolent feudal system in which the few will be very well paid to oversee the income equality of the many.
The left's private argument against the American Dream is that it's little more than Walmart. And to some degree they're right. Easy availability of the necessities of life does not lead to a meaningful life. But the easy contempt that the left has for it shows its basic inability to understand how important these things are and how hard they were to come by for most of human history.
Salt was once a precious commodity. Today it sells for pennies a pound. The ability to light the darkness meant the difference between studying at night and living in ignorance. Today a light bulb goes for a quarter. At least it did until the left banned them. And electricity, the left also keeps raising the price of that. Few of the post-apocalyptic fantasies spilling out of Hollywood really describe what would happen if the people manufacturing them were thrown back before the industrial revolution.
Progress has made a good life materially possible, but it has also displaced and damaged the social mechanisms that make a good life socially possible. We have easy access to technology and streets full of vicious illiterate thugs. We can discuss anything with anyone, but we live in a society that values few things worth discussing. We have mass production, but not mass character.
For all its feigned populism, such elitist critiques of society are not foreign to the left. The left's elitist critiques differ in some regards, but they are on the same basic wavelength as those of the social conservative. And its solution is to promote what it considers social progress by reversing or slowing down industrial, commercial and technological progress. The environmental movement is only the latest ideological incarnation of this philosophy which strives to slow down the rate of progress.
The left's social collectivism however is no replacement for what is being lost. What it really does is attempt to apply industrial and commercial strategies to human relationships. Not only is it not a challenge to a consumeristic society, but it attempts to worsen the damage by rebuilding society on the model of the factory and the department store as an impersonal system.
That's not a solution to the problem. It is the problem.
The left cannot escape its own materialism. Its attempts at adding an ethical dimension to materialism fail because its ethical dimension is still materialistic. Its pathetic efforts at injecting pastiches of Third World and minority spirituality into its politics to provide the illusion of a spiritual dimension are hollow and racist. The left cannot fill its own hole, because it is the hole.
Like Islam, it provides something for people to believe in, but the thing it provides is the compulsion to find meaning by forcibly remaking other people's lives in a perpetual revolution which becomes its own purpose.
The left can't replace family or religion. Its social solutions are alien and artificial. They fix nothing and damage everything. Their appeal is to those who are arrogant and starved for meaning, who want religion without religion and family without family only to discover that they are not enough.

A Day In The Life
I got up at 6:15am on Friday, to a cold Condo, yet not nearly as cold on a 31°F outside morning, just as it was getting light at 6:30am. After grabbing my über-warm Turkish Bathrobe, cranking-up the heat to 76°F, I peered out of the front door's glass storm door at what additional snow, about 4-5", had come down overnight, on top of the 20-22" we'd gotten in York County, on Thursday. Hard to believe a mere snowfall can cause that much havoc, chaos, mayhem and death. Imagine what a real disaster would do? Anyway, I made some Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, and
By 11:45am, temps had reached 39°F and some of the white stuff was melting, causing more street flooding with the snow-clogged storm sewers. And things just plain sucked✔ for over 100+ vehicles on the PA Turnpike, too. Around 1pm, the all-too-familiar ***WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY*** was posted everywhere, as another snow/ice storm headed our way from the Midwest, kindly bestowing an additional 1-3" of the fluffy white stuff upon us. Crap. No garbage pick-up curbside, today. While clearing snow from my sidewalk and driveway, and my neighbor's driveway cleanup and salting (CaCl2), to keep it from re-freezing overnight. Temps were already dropping into the low-20s. Listened to some Classical Music on WITF-89.5 FM (choose your player) until 6pm, and enjoyed the break from Talk Radio. I got up at 6am on Saturday morning, to light snow, 31°F, turned-up the heat and started coffee and OJ. The weather sites still had the ***WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY*** posted, which I ignored, and I checked the news sites instead. After a large plate of Creamed Chipped Beef & Gravy Over Toast w/ Peas, I got ready and left to visit Dad, at 9:30. It was snowing like crazy, sticking to everything and made driving a fun experience as all drivers, me included, slipped and slid on the road surfaces. After visiting with Dad, I had some errands to do, stopped by Weis Market to get some things, and was home by 12:30pm. The storm moved into New England by 3pm, became a blizzard and beat the crap out of them with 60mph winds. Heh. I listened to "Best of Rush" from 12-3, swapped-out an older 500GB WD external HD for a new external 2Tb Western Digital® Back-Up HD, and transferred files from my Condo Computer's new C:/ HD, in preparation for tomorrow's Back-Up/Restore routine. Done, I made Italian Vegetable Chicken Beef Meatball Wedding Soup and Crusty Italian Garlic Bread and Red Skin Potato Salad, for a late lunch. Good day for hot soup and crusty garlic bread. Everyday's a good day for potato salad. Eat like a horse.
While waiting for the massive file transfers to load and finish, I had time to think about all of the "things" which have gone on, are going on and will go on from here. Our Nation's coming

I slept-in until 7:30 on a cold, sunny 17°F Sunday morning, remembering that I didn't have to go food shopping and had nothing in particular to do. I started-up the computer, as I was making coffee and having some Del Monte® Red Grapefruit Sections and an English Muffin w/ Marmalade, but it was hanging-up and sluggish to start Win-7 Pro. Damn. When it finally opened, I checked the Back-Up/Restore settings, and it was searching for the old WD 500GB external (E:/) drive, instead of the newly-installed WD® "My Book" WD 1TB external (G:/) drive, so I reset the drive's switch-to, back-up command in the Back-Up/Restore procedure. After switching E:/ and G:/ external drives, I went ahead and did the procedure with the external G:/ drive in-place, checked the weather and news, downloaded email and scanned those, and kept working the Opera v16 browser, with no ill effect. So far, so good; 90% finished. Crap; more snow/ice coming tomorrow evening and Tuesday morning. I made a Grilled Cheese w/Ham Sandwich & Potato Salad for lunch, and started a couple loads of laundry. Up at 6:30am on Monday, a bitter cold 4°F, sunny and windy day. After getting coffee and OJ underway, I checked the weather and news sites, scanned email, and saw that the new snow/ice storm was approaching from the west, and that we were forecast to get another 2-4" overnight. Meh. I turned on the streaming Morning Show from WMAL (DC), which leads directly into the morning Chris Plante Show, on the same station. I grabbed a quick shower, got ready and went out to get some errands done. Traffic was sparse at 9:45am, even with most people off from work for the Presidents' Day Holiday, and I got thru the side trips in short order.
Back home by 10:30am, I noticed that the snow/ice storm in the Midwest and Northern Plains was gaining steam and coming our way fast. By 12noon, the now-ubiquitous and boring ***WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY*** was posted on every website and all over CATV's stations. Blech. After starting another load of laundry, I made a large plate of Creamed Chipped Beef & Gravy Over Toast, w/ Peas, went down to my basement workshop and rotated-out a small On the morning's trip, I noticed that gas/diesel prices at the pump, had increased 8¢/gal, since Friday, January 31st: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now at $3.53/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $3.63/gal, Premium (93 oct) is at $3.83/gal, with Diesel Fuel/Kerosene K-2 also rising to $4.23/gal, at most stations in the York (PA) area. pile of AR-15, AR-10 and .50cal mags' rounds, after breaking-in the new springs. By 5pm, temps were quickly dropping from a day's high of 23°F down to 14°F, but I went out for a walk around the block, slipping and sliding on the frozen street slush. Bad idea; probably won't do that again, anytime soon. I spent an hour fine-tuning my Cisco Router to get maximum download/upload speed from it, on Speed Net. By 8:30, the leading edge of the snow/ice storm was just overspreading the area. I solidified my plans to go south to p/u the Rxs at Rite Aid (Stewartstown), and p/u Chinese Dim Sum from Emerald Garden Restaurant (Shrewsbury), to Wednesday, Thursday or even Friday. The Rite Aid Pharmacy's robo-call reminder that my 4 Rxs were ready, came again on my cellphone. I also worked on paying some upcoming bills, so I could get them into the USPS by Thursday; Friday at the latest. The usual Mark Levin Show was streaming on-air from 6-9, but had Howie Carr from Boston, as a sub-host; he's good so I stayed with it for 3hrs. By 9:30pm, my eyes were starting to cross, so I splashed my face with cold water, and that helped for another 45mins or so. One last check on the storm's eastward progress, still showing
Some nights are better than others, and last night wasn't one of them. Awake 3-4x with weird dreams of varying SHTF scenarios, like what's happening in Ukraine, I finally got-up at 3:30am, 28°F outside, turned-up the heat, made OJ and coffee, and checked the weather sites. I turned-on local WSBA, and WMAL in DC, to hear the news and about the morning commute, accidents and school/gov't/business closings. There were plenty here in York and in DC/MD. I'm glad that I don't have to leave every morning at 5am for work. By 6:30am, the storm had pretty much passed this area and was headed-up into New England; sucks to be them. We got a solid 1½-2". I made Soft-Boiled Eggs w/ Toast in a bowl, for breakfast, and remembered that the cleaning ladies would be here around 8:30am, so I wrote out the check. I had a couple errands to get done, so I left for an hour, which turned into three hours as I visited Home Depot and Lowe's, looking for some esoteric audio hardware. Radio Shack doesn't have a clue, either. I gave up and came home at 12noon, made a Grilled Cheese & Proscuitto Sandwich, a bowl of Maryland Crab Soup, and French Fries and ate while listening to Rush. I was getting political survey/fund raising calls all afternoon, and used

Tomorrow's going to suck for a lot of people, with all the warm temps, t-storms and rain on top of this ice and snow. Floods and roof collapses. And I've got 10-12" of ice sticking out of my unreachable gutters. Crap. I grabbed a quick shower, got ready and went out to run some errands. 43°F and rising. While out, I stopped in at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter(1.5 million sqft!) in East York to get socks etc, and promptly got lost in the frigging store. I hadn't been there since they expanded and more-than-tripled the space 5-6yrs ago; it was unbelievable how large that place is! 6-7 of the Weis Markets I usually food shop, could easily fit inside that monstrous place; I was overwhelmed by all of the choices: 280 types of cereal, 255 types of deodorant, 176 types of crackers, 857 types of candy, uncountable types of clothes, uncountable types of toys... aisles and aisles and aisles and aisles and aisles and aisles and aisles and aisles
Tomorrow starts a new week in the "Journal", and I'll be spending as many hours as I can researching Medicare and HighMark Blue Shield plans; no firm appointments so I've got to narrow down some choices and make some decisions, and get ready for the March 31st switch from Geisinger to HighMark, or go without until Dec 2nd. The Middle East is rapidly-collapsing under the subhuman, murderous muslim/islamic riots (muslim Brotherhood) and rule ("arab Spring"), with world crude oil prices projected to hit $200+/bbl, or even higher into the $300-$400 range,
Just Google "survival" and see what comes-up. Damned-near everything you ever wanted to know how to prepare for this for-sure-coming "hellish holocaust", some of it in easy-to-download *.PDF format. Tens-of-thousands of websites are devoted to the topic of "survival". Do the same with "You Tube", and watch the thousands of videos. This is *NOT The Phony Y2K Crappola*; this is for real. I said numerous times that Y2K was a waste of time and money to prepare for, and that came true. I'm reading that "survival stores" are reporting a huge upswing in sales and preparations, and for good reason.

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs. Yesterday, we learned that President Obama believes that entrepreneurs don't build businesses. Ultimately, they're irrelevant. Take that for what you will." ©Principles and Policy, July 14, 2012

It is called the Center of Military History. It is located 30 minutes outside Washington, D.C., at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The building itself is very nondescript.
but behind a series of highly alarmed doors and long, cement, camera-laden hallways. It is the highly sophisticated, climate-controlled treasure room where the army keeps its most precious artifacts.
The facility was built for $24 million in 2010. The cavernous warehouse is typically shrouded in total darkness. Motion lights illuminate only the areas in which someone is walking.
