as the Obama administration descends into a whirlpool of scandals, a race has begun among Congressional committees and news organizations to find the proverbial smoking gun – the document that will link President Obama directly to the IRS's targeting of conservative groups, or to the Justice Department's unprecedented legal actions against the Associated Press and Fox News reporter James Rosen, or to the Pentagon's ghastly failure to launch a rescue mission when our consulate in Benghazi came under attack last September.
Study history, and you will understand why no such document is ever likely to be found: That just isn't how these things work. Very few people are aware of this, but there is no document – not one – linking Adolf Hitler to the Holocaust. Why not? Because Hitler didn't need to sign a document ordering the slaughter of six million Jews. All he needed to do was to demonize his enemy in speeches at the Reichstag, on the radio, and from one end of Germany to the other – then hire thugs like Herman Goering, Heinrich Himmler, Adolf Eichmann, and Josef Goebbels. They knew what der Fuhrer wanted, and der Fuhrer knew he could trust his henchman to get the job done – no matter how, no matter what may be the law – and to not bother him with the gory details.
Reader, take a deep breath. Nowhere in this essay will I suggest, or even imply, that President Obama plans the mass murder of his opponents the way Hitler murdered his. That's absurd. I am merely pointing out that President Obama has been going about the business of demonizing his political enemies, and then hiring thugs to destroy them without regard to the law, in precisely the same way that Hitler and his fascists did it in Germany. This isn't an accusation; it's an observation.
Look at the record: From the moment he took office in January 2009, President Obama has spoken before Congress, on television, and at countless rallies across the country describing his political opponents in terms we haven't seen before in the United States. Time and again he's insisted that Republicans aren't merely wrong, but evil. Hardly a week goes by without yet another sneering comment about "millionaires and billionaires" – by which he means those men and women who actually built the businesses that created jobs for all the rest of us, not the ones he and the First Lady party with in Hollywood and on Martha's Vineyard.
Hatred for the Tea Party
His rhetoric heated up fast after the Tea Party movement gave the GOP enough oomph to win back the House of Representatives in 2010, and as the president geared up for the 2012 election. He urged Latino voters to help him "punish our enemies and reward our friends." He told his supporters at one rally to think of voting for him as "an act of revenge." Did you see the president at that Georgetown University forum on the future of Medicare when he trashed Paul Ryan's own plan, then went out of his way to publicly insult Ryan, while the Congressman himself was sitting in the front row too stunned – and too decent and respectful of the presidency – to respond in kind? Do you remember that television campaign ad describing Mitt Romney – one of the most capable, financially astute, thoroughly decent men who ever graced public life – as "not one of us"?
And while demonizing his political enemies, what sort of people did the president appoint to key jobs in his administration? His attorney general is Eric Holder, a sleazy Democratic operative who not only called the American people "cowards" for their approach to racial issues – this after the majority of us elected a black president – but who played a crucial role as deputy attorney general in the scandalous and still-uninvestigated pardon of Marc Rich in the Clinton administration's dying hours. The national security advisor is Thomas Donilon, another Democratic Party operative who got rich while serving as executive vice president for law and policy at Fannie Mae. And who was our secretary of state when the consulate in Benghazi came under attack? The same Hillary Clinton who, as the wife of Arkansas' up-and-coming governor, made an overnight $100,000 killing by trading cattle futures – a feat no professional cattle-futures trader has ever been able to explain, or duplicate.
No one who's spent time in our nation's capital comes away with a romantic view of party politics and the people who do this for a living; the Saint-Per-Square-Mile ratio in Washington has always been fairly low. But David Axelrod? David Plouffe? Have you ever come across two Chicago-style, hardball-playing creeps like these clowns? They make Richard Nixon's two White House thugs, Bob Haldeman and John Erlichman, look like choir boys.
Demonize your political enemies, then hire people like these, and the result is precisely what happened in Germany after 1933 and what's happening now to us: a kind of bureaucratic coup d'etat in which the legitimately elected government overturns the established relationship between the individual and the State and replaces it with something very different; a relationship that no one voted for, saw coming, or imagined could happen so quickly and so quietly.
Forget About a Coup d'Etat
This is the United States in 2013, not Germany in 1933, and there's no real possibility that President Obama will get away with his attempted coup d'etat. There are members of Congress in both parties who are appalled by what the president has been doing, and even a few liberal news organizations are starting to wake up. But while the hunt for some document that would be the smoking gun will be entertaining – and while it would be nice to see a special prosecutor appointed who'd throw at least a few members of this administration who've perjured themselves before Congress into prison – it would also be a mistake.
Education is more important than prosecution. Right now, the best use of their time and energy would be to expose the Obama administration's wrongdoings; to illuminate for Americans just what's been going on in Washington and to show voters – especially young voters – what sort of country we'd be living in if the president had gotten away with this. Never before have our politicians and our news organizations had a better opportunity to demonstrate just what happens when we vote carelessly, elect a zealot who appoints operatives with no sense of honor or comprehension of right-and-wrong, then parties with rock stars while his coup d'etat unfolds.
Yes, I realize that throughout this essay I've used an analogy that some people will find offensive or even repugnant. But I've done this deliberately, because this is no time to hold back or to mince words. And if the president doesn't like being compared to a Nazi – he should stop acting like one.

A Day In The Life
The rain on the Condo's 4 skylights woke me at 5:30am, on Friday. 57°F, overcast, cool and rainy. I made French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from whole, freshly-ground Starbuck's® Dark French Roast Fresh Ground Beans) with my Chemex® Drip System, some Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, and Eggs, Grits, Cheese & Bacon over greens, for breakfast. I had some errands to run, so I left at 9:30. My ancient 2006 Nokia 6060 "Clamshell" cellphone "rejected it smartchip", so I re-seated it, re-started the phone, and some delayed messages finally came thru. Dad would be out running errands today, too, so I went home after I was finished, and worked on paperwork and bills, until 12:30pm.

On Saturday, I managed to sleep-in until 7am, made coffee, OJ and just skipped breakfast. I had some errands to get done before the traffic built-up on the roads, and stop-by to visit Dad, for a little while, before coming back to unload the Jeep. By 8:30am, it was a sunny 60°F, low humidity and looked to be a nice day around 80°F. I left at 8:45. Traffic was light, and I got to Dad's about 10:15, visited and planned Tomorrow's Father's Day lunch, updated my morning food shopping list to include the new items, and came home around 11:30. As I was unloading the Jeep, I saw one of my neighbors struggling with the changing of a flat tire, and went over to help. That done, I unpacked, did some garden weeding and spraying – next door neighbor's, too – sorted thru the garage freezer to see what needed rotating-out, and went out for a short walk, until 1pm. There were several Condo cleaning chores which needed to be done, and I made a Grilled Ham & Cheese Sandwich and Potato Chips, for lunch.
I caught-up on some missed Mark Levin Show Podcasts, while reorganizing my large, dbl-door Cannon T-65 Gunsafe. I'm still waiting on
I slept-in on Sunday, until 7am, skipped the food shopping trip, and will do it either tomorrow, in between laundry loads or on Tuesday morning. I just didn't feel like it today. After making coffee, some OJ, I had some buttered Rye toast, and was saving my appetite for lunch with Dad: Allen Bros 8oz Filet Mignons, homemade brown gravy from beef stock, peeled baby potatoes w/ butter, steamed asparagus w/ butter, chef's salad. I'd make some of it here, to take there, and finish-up at his kitchen. He has an electric (I have Nat Gas) stove and I don't like cooking on it; too little control as opposed to NG. I broiled the steaks, made the gravy & potatoes, loaded-up a box with those items and the uncooked asparagus (I can do that on an electric stove), started the Back-Up/Restore Program, and left at 11:30. We had a great lunch, visited for 2hrs, did his computer's Back-Up/Restore Program, took a 30-min call from Becky, and I left at 2:30.
On the way home, I noticed that the roads were nearly empty and made unusually good time on Rt 30 East, stopped at a convenience store and got a carton of Marlboros. Some nasty storm clouds were
Tired, I slept-in until 7am again, on Monday, made coffee, had some Del Monte® Red Grapefruit Sections and skipped breakfast, checked the news and weather sites. 74°F by 8am, already, and t-storms moving towards us, from the west. I hate "laundry day" Mondays, but it's necessary. After my usual morning shower, I started the loads of laundry, while listening to the Chris Plante Show, from 9-12. 83°F and the approaching t-storms fell apart; the weather was nice, so I went out for a short walk. I made a Ham & Swiss on Rye Sandwich and chips, for lunch, folded the damned laundry, remade the
By 5:30, I'd run into 3 neighbors and their multiple dogs, played with all 8 of the dogs, and walked back home. I cleaned-up, grabbed some Ocean Spray® Diet Blueberry Juice, and tuned into the Mark Levin Show, from 6-9pm. I have to go food shopping early morning, run some errands and visit Dad, and work on the last 2 kitchen cabinets' areas needing touch-up with the Minwax® Blend-Fil Pencil #2 Natural. There are so many layers and buffing between layers, and blending another darker color, if needed, that it's very tedious work. But saving $7-8,000 in new cabinets is sure worth the effort. I armed the Condo, closed down the computer and headed upstairs; no sleeping-in tomorrow.
My alarm went-off at 6am on Tuesday, to a cloudy, 67°F day, disarmed the Condo, made coffee, OJ and logged-on to the Net's weather and new sites. There was a huge t-storm headed our way from

I was up at 7am on Wednesday, to a less humid, cool 59°F day, and after checking the weather and news sites, it was forecast to only hit 77°F for the day. The Condo's rain gauge showed 1¾", and I emptied it. Everything outside was drenched, so no outside work at Dad's until tomorrow and things had a chance to dry-out. I made coffee, had some Del Monte® Mandarin Oranges and skipped breakfast until later in the morning. I just wasn't "feeling well", for some reason. After opening-up the Condo's windows and back screen door, the fresh air felt and smelled good. Our personal/corporate CPA called Dad, and he and I need to go to meet with him at 10am tomorrow, to finally sign and electronically send our 2012 Federal/State/Local Area Income Tax Returns; they've all been delayed since he got way behind after losing his mother, back in April.
I had a Roast Beef, Cheese & Tomato Sandwich for lunch, took a snooze on the LR couch, and felt better. I got some files, my checkbook and briefcase ready to go to the CPA's office tomorrow with Dad, went out and sat on the front porch in the sun for a while, came back in to listen to the Mark Levin Show, from 6-9pm. I watched part of "Hannity" on Fox News CATV, and skipped around to other stations, until 10, armed the Condo with
Another less humid, cool 55°F day start on Thursday, I was up at 6:30am, actually turned-on the heat for 10-15mins, made coffee, OJ and some toast. After the chill was off the Condo, I went back on AC, but on a later Honeywell® Digital Furnace/AC Thermostat manual start. I need to update that unit. I checked the weather and news sites; Summer's coming back over the weekend and next week: very hot and humid, so I'd need to get some more outdoor work done at Dad's before that unpleasant weather returns. I drove to Dad's, picked him up at 9:15, and we went to the CPAs Office, in Dallastown, to get our personal & corporate returns signed, pay his fees, make a Markey's Fruit Stand stop on the way back, and get home by 11:30am. I fixed a couple of things on his HP laptop, and went out to see what more needed work around his house. Temps got to a high of 78°F, and tomorrow would be near 80, so he wanted to get the 3¼-ac mowed, and we'd work on shrub pruning etc tomorrow; so I left to finish-up some errands.
Back home by 12:30pm, I made a Turkey Club w/ Fries, transplanted several perennials in the Condo's front garden, helped a neighbor with their garage door safety latch problem and lubed their door, added anti-freeze to the Jeep's engine (***Coolant Level Low***), and took a 12" stack of 2012 income tax files to the basement shelves' filing boxes, to put away. I needed to re-stock the kitchen cabinet with soup and some other canned goods, so I brought-up some of the older, rotated-out cans to use. 6pm came quickly, and I settled-in to listen to the usual Mark Levin Show until 9; then switched-over to Fox News to watch "Hannity" for a short while. Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and I'll get to as much outdoor work at Dad's, as much I can in the heat and humidity. I don't do well for too long, in those conditions, anymore. His driveway needs a sealcoating on the macadam, too; that's already scheduled. We're getting closer to being finished with "the list", and then I can move on to other friends' projects over the Summer and into the Fall. My sister will be arriving from SF in a few weeks, and all of her belongings will be shipped to Dad's for storage, so we'll have a busy time with that, in mid/end of July.

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
