if the economy is improving, then why are many of the largest retail chains in America closing hundreds of stores?
When I was growing up in the 50s, Sears & Roebuck, Montgomery Ward were the national "big guy" retail stores, with highly-anticipated monthly printed catalogs. Their brick and mortar stores were ubiquitous and huge. Marshall Field, Macy's and a host of regional stores soon followed their successful business model.
In the later years – 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s – K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Lord & Taylor, Abercrombe & Fitch, Barney's, Saks, Bloomingdale's, Nordstroms, J.C. Penney, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Borders, Circuit City, Target, Macy's, Kohl's, Staples were all considered to be unstoppable retail powerhouses.
But now it is being projected that all of those still standing, will close hundreds, if not thousands of stores before the end of 2013 or mid-2014. Even venerable Wal-Mart is running into problems. A recent internal Wal-Mart memo that was leaked to Bloomberg described February sales as a "total disaster".
So why is this happening? Why are major retail chains all over America collapsing? Is the "Retail ∅pocalypse" upon us, now? Well, the truth is that this is just another sign that the US Economy is falling apart right in front of our eyes. A negligible 0.1% GDP growth in 4th Qtr 2012 might indicate that. That's not even considered "economic growth". Both personal and corporate incomes are rapidly-declining, personal and corporate taxes are going-up, government dependence is at an all-time high, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the percentage of the US labor force that is employed, has been steadily-falling since 2006. All bad omens.
The top 10% of all income earners in the US are still doing very well, but most US consumers are either flat broke or are drowning in personal debt. The large disposable incomes that the big retail chains have depended upon in the past simply are not there anymore. So retail chains all over the United States are now closing up unprofitable stores. This is especially true in low income areas. Just makes good business sense to close-down losing operation, regardless of where they're located.
When you step back and take a look at the bigger picture, the rapid decline of some of our largest retail chains really is beyond stunning. It's dumbfounding.
It is happening already in some areas, but soon half-empty/completely-empty malls and boarded-up storefronts will largely litter the landscapes of cities all over America. I see it every day, during my travels, and conversations with realtors and auctioneers.
Here are just a very, very few of these store closing numbers for 2013. Count on many more to slop-over into 2014. It isn't over by a long shot. These initial numbers are from a recent Yahoo Finance article:
• Best Buy – Forecast store closings: 200 to 250.
• Sears Holding Corp. – Forecast store closings: Kmart 175 to 225, Sears 100 to 125.
• J.C. Penney – Forecast store closings: 300 to 350.
• Office Depot – Forecast store closings: 125 to 150.
• Barnes & Noble – Forecast store closings: 190 to 240, per company comments.
• Gamestop – Forecast store closings: 500 to 600.
• OfficeMax – Forecast store closings: 150 to 175.
• Radio Shack – Forecast store closings: 450 to 550.
• Old Navy reduced its store size after parent company Gap Inc. announced its plans to remove 1 million square feet from US Old Navy stores in October 2011.
• At the same time, Gap Inc. also announced its plans to reduce the number of Gap stores in the United States to 700 by 2013, creating a "smaller, healthier specialty store fleet," the company said in a statement last year.
The three Radio Shacks are in nearby towns near where I live, in York, PA, are still in business with no discernible plans to close or consolidate, as yet.
But the truth is that those store closings are not the entire story. When you dig deeper you find a lot more retailers that are in trouble.
For example, Blockbuster recently announced that this year they will be closing about 300 stores and eliminating about 3,000 jobs.
J.C. Penney is an unmitigated financial and merchandising disaster, trying to fix itself in ways which are simply unfixable. By hiring shit-for-brains Ron Johnson, lowlife-idiot and moron of Apple's retail operations, as CEO, sealed its fate as a unfriendly "family-oriented" store. It will never recover. Goodbye and good riddance, JCP!
Toy manufacturer Hasbro recently announced that they will be reducing the size of their workforce by about 10-11%.
Even Wal-Mart is going through a tough stretch right now. According to documents that were leaked to Bloomberg, Wal-Mart is having an absolutely disastrous February...
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. had the worst sales start to a month in seven years as payroll-tax increases hit shoppers already battling a slow economy, according to internal e-mails obtained by Bloomberg News.
"In case you haven't been privy to see a corporate sales report these days, February mid-sales are a total disaster," Jerry Murray, Wal-Mart's VP of finance and logistics, said in a Feb. 12th e-mail to other executives, referring to month-to-date sales. "This is the worst start to a month I have seen in my nearly 7 years with the company".
So what in the world is going on here?
The mainstream media continues to proclaim that we are experiencing a robust "economic recovery", but at the same time there are a whole host of indications that things are continually getting worse.
Even global cell phone sales actually declined slightly in 2012. That was the first time that has happened since the last recession.
Perhaps it is time that we faced the truth. The middle class is disappearing, not just shrinking, incomes are declining fast with every paycheck, and there are not nearly as many jobs as there used to be. All ominous signs for the retail world.
Mort Zuckerman pointed this out in a recent article in the "Wall Street Journal".
The US labor market, which peaked in November 2007 when there were 139,143,000 jobs, now encompasses only 132,705,000 workers, a drop of 6.4 million jobs from the peak. The only work that has increased is part-time, and that is because it allows employers to reduce costs through a diminished benefit package or none at all.
So how can the mainstream media be talking about how "good" things are if we still have 6.4 million fewer jobs than we had back in November 2007?
And sadly, things may soon be getting a lot worse. If Congress does not do anything about the "sequester", millions of federal workers may shortly be facing some very painful furloughs according to CNN.
Federal workers could start facing furloughs as early as April, according to federal agencies trying to prepare for the worst.
Unless the corrupt, criminal US Congress steps-in, some $85 billion in massive spending reductions will hit the federal government, doling out furloughs to much of the nation's 2.1 million federal workforce, experts say.
If you still live in an area of the country where the stores and the restaurants are booming, you should be very thankful because that is not the reality for most of the country.
I often note about the stunning disparity of economic decline of major cities such as Detroit, Trenton, Newark, Cleveland, etc, but there are huge sections of rural America that are in even worse shape than Detroit in many ways. Ever hear of the Appalachia region?
It is hard to believe that there are places like that in America, but the truth is that conditions like that are spreading to more US communities with each passing day.
We are a nation that is in a greatly advanced state of decline. But as long as the public financial markets are "okay", our leaders don't seem too concerned about the suffering that everyone else is going through.

A Day In The Life
I slept-in until 8:15 on Monday Morning, turned-up he heat to 77°F, grabbed my warm Turkish Bathrobe, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, my new fresh-ground, an amazing new brand of coffee, rich black bean coffee, Soft-Boiled Eggs w/ Toast in a bowl, and more coffee. I needed to leave for Stewartstown in Southern York County, some 20 miles south, to p/u 4 ready BP Rxs at Rite Aid, stop and check the GC&N Complex, which now had an "Auction Fri April 1st, 2013" sign on it, and get back to make a final decision on switching car insurance. Not to mention some more work on the wood flood crack scraping. I left at 9:30am.

After calling Dad and re-reviewing the coming week's Jeep's expected re-insurance and re-titlement, I decided to go over and visit him tomorrow after Sunday food shopping, making sure I get things for him for the coming "Mega-Blizzard of 2013", or whatever happens on Wednesday-Thursday. I'm well-stocked, except for smokes. My left hip was bothering me so I decided not to spend too much time of the floor work. I miss the 325mg adult aspirin – it's the only non-narcotic pain killer that ever really worked for me – but upon Dr's orders, it's now a "no-no". I'll give it a break for now. I listened to missed Chris Plante Podcasts, Michael Berry Podcasts and Mark Levin Podcasts, for the day, while doing computer work. No appetite due to hip pain, so I skipped both breakfast and lunch. I used the towel-wrapped cold-pak for most of the day, and that helped somewhat. After listening to some 70s & 80s Pink Floyd and Bob Seeger on my 5.1 Surround-Sound, I packed it around 10:30pm. I needed to go food shopping and visit Dad tomorow. Plus do some more floor work.
I also slept-in on Sunday, until 7am, had a Croissant and coffee, reset the Win-7 Pro Back-Up/Restore Scheduler to 8am, and just scanned the news and weather sites until it started. Then, after shutting-down all other apps, I collected the week's mail from the CHCA community mailbox, and went food shopping at Weis Market, in East York. With my appetite slowly returning, I made a Bacon Cheddar-Cheeseburger w/ Fries, and Bush's Baked Beans, for lunch. I went thru the week's mail, notably the new car insurance application for Penn National, which need to be filled-out, copied, a single-payment premium check written for and be submitted by Friday, April 15th. It's a HUGE application and will take several hours to complete, copy at Dad's, and notify the former car insurance carrier that they're canceled, and that the accompanying insurance card can now allow me to re-title the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I also got a 3½% rate increase (surprise) in my monthly healthcare premium from Geisinger HealthCare Corp, good until 12/31/13. God only knows what'll happen to it all after that date, in 2014. Plus, lots of other bills to put into the hopper, to get paid.
With my hip aching, I put a cold-pak on it, lit a fire at 4pm and laid down on the LR couch for a few hours to rest and sleep-off the meal, and woke at 6:30pm. "Gun Talk Radio" came on from 8-11pm, and I packed it in for the night. Busy week ahead; tomorrow's laundry day, bank deposits,and shirt drop-offs at the cleaners; Tuesday's a trip to the GC&N with Hellam Twp to purchase more trees and shrubs, and who knows "what" the forecast "Wed-Thu Blizzard" will bring, for weather? Plus, I've got all that auto insurance/re-titlement paperwork to get done by next Friday.
By 6:30am on Monday, a ***WINTER STORM ADVISORY*** had been posted for this area, and comparisons to past blizzards ("Ash Wednesday Blizzard of 1962", etc) were flying all over the place. I have 8 weather sites on Opera's "Speed Dial" and they all were reporting the same thing: SNOW and lots of it! I had OJ and coffee, skipped breakfast, showered, started the laundry loads, gathered my bundle of shirts and bank deposits, and left at 8:45am to get some errands done. It was a sunny 35°F day, with a stiff, cold wind blowing from the west. The
I skipped lunch, had some red grapes and a Chicken Parmesan Sandwich w/ Hot Cheddar Cheese & Fries for dinner at 5:30pm, and picked-up the Mark Levin Show, on from 6-9pm, watched some news and heavy, wet snow forecasts, which weren't looking real good. After a good hour of a towel-wrapped ice-pak on my lower back and left hip, I called it quits for the day, around 10pm. I could sleep-in tomorow a little late, since my cleaning ladies would be doing Dad's house first, and I planned to leave later-than-usual, around 9:45am, to pick-up the Hellam Twp Roadmaster, to purchase more plant material, down at the GC&N Complex. I was also to meet Rev Tom Shelley there, so he could choose some more donations for his lovely Zion (Shaffer's) United Lutheran Church.
Damn, I woke-up at 3:30am on Tuesday, drenched in sweat, and my left hip was aching badly, and felt sick. After opening-up the freshly-laundered bed to let it dry and air-out, I really needed some 325mg aspirin, but didn't take any, because of this crap. I felt sick from the Chicken Parmesan Sandwich, so I stayed very near the bathroom for the next few hours. I couldn't get back to sleep, no matter how I tried. I had a slight fever – 99.7°F – so I stayed-up, made coffee and scanned the weather and news sites. 23°F and clear, so far. Sun coming-up at 6:25am. All sites now had a ***WINTER STORM WATCH*** posted and it looked like we'd take a significant "moisture hit", too, this time. I used the towel-wrapped, cold-pak on my left hip, and that helped somewhat. I canceled my 2 GC&N appointments, and will reschedule them both

Joanne, my cleaning lady arrived at 8:30am, having had to skip Dad's house cleaning for the day, due to her cleaning partner, Rhonda, also being sick, so she spent the better part of 3hrs here. With Rhonda, it takes the both of them less than 2hrs to clean. I was feeling better since getting the Chicken-Parmesan "out of my system", ate some Jell-O and grapes, which was all I could keep down. By 12noon, weather sites had posted ***WINTER STORM WARNINGS*** everywhere, and hundreds of out-of-state utility crews were heading in this direction. While she worked on cleaning the Condo, I spent 2hr scraping floor board cracks, vacuuming the dirt, then used a stiff floor brush in a warm water/ vinegar solution, scrubbing the entire floor, closet and powder room while I changed the bucket's dirty water 6x, until the floor was 5-6 shades lighter, and looked 100% better than before. In between other projects, I kept watching The Blizzard's steady progress until around 10pm, and finally gave-up, needing serious sleep and hip/back rest. Both Dad and I were well-stocked-up with provisions for days – other than the loss of power – in case the storm stuck around and got worse than expected, and if the crew got the roads cleared-up, I'd head over to his house and help get the snow cleared from his driveways, sidewalks and porches. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
I was up and semi-awake again at 3:30am on Wednesday, after a weird dream about the "future of the Nation" and decided to check the weather sites, before going back to sleep for a few more hours. The weather maps showed snow-snow-snow, and it was coming-down heavily, outside. I grabbed my über-warm Turkish Bathrobe, turned-up the heat, had some Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, and scanned more overloaded weather websites: same dire predictions of 4-8" of wet, heavy snow. I left the Condo alarm system on, and just looked through the windows at the storm's building ferocity.

The snow had changed-over to a rain-mix by then, turning much of it all to slush, and it looked like we'd only gotten 1-2" so far. Hardly the "blizzard" amounts forecast. Schools are closed, local/state/federal government offices are shut-down, thousands of airline flights canceled, minor road accidents everywhere, and many businesses are also closed. After calling Dad to talk for a while, I decided to also stay-in for the day and get some more paperwork done. By 12:45pm, the snow had picked-back-up, and was coming down harder than ever. Yet temps were still in the 34-35°F range and not much was sticking to the slushy roads; grassy areas were the exception. By 4:15, all ***SNOW ADVISORIES*** & ***WINTER STORM WARNINGS*** had been canceled/terminated and it was just cold rainfall. ***FLOOD WATCHES**** were quickly posted for low-lying areas but that didn't effect Dad, me or the business, in any way. All in all, much ado again, about much of nothing at all. Yawn. By 6pm, I listened to the Mark Levin Show, on from 6-9pm, and briefly watched some news before calling it a day at 10pm.

"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virgina. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
