as the cleaning crews were mopping the dried blood from the stage and the seats of the Bataclan concert hall in Paris, a depressing act appeared on stage in distant Iowa.
Saturday night the three contenders for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination took to the stage in Iowa for a debate. The moderator asked them whether they would be willing to use the term “radical Islam” to describe the ideology motivating Islamic terrorists to massacre innocents. All refused.
Like her former boss, US President Barack Obama, former secretary of state and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton not only refused to accept the relevance of the term. Clinton refused to acknowledge what radical Islam stands for.
She merely noted some of what it rejects.
In her words, “I think this kind of barbarism and nihilism, it’s very hard to understand, other than the lust for power, the rejection of modernity, the total disregard for human rights, freedom, or any other value that we know and respect.”
Her opponents agreed with her.
But of course, it is easy to understand what motivates Islamic terrorists. They tell us all the time.
They want the world to be run by an Islamic empire.
When they are in charge, they will kill, subjugate, convert or enslave all non-Muslims, except Jews.
The Jews will be obliterated.
The attacks they carry out in the Western world are viewed both as battles for the soul of Muslims worldwide and as a means to terrorize non-Muslims into accepting subjugation.
True, there are competing schools inside of the world of radical Islam.
On the one hand, there is the Sunni version of radical Islam propounded by the Muslim Brotherhood.
They want the Islamic empire to be an Islamic caliphate. On the other hand, you have the Shi’ite version of radical Islam propounded by the Iranian regime in Tehran. Its adherents want the Islamic empire to be ruled by an ayatollah in Tehran.
For Americans and the rest of the free world though, this is a distinction without any real meaning.
The radical Islamic goal of destroying America – and the rest of the world – is the same regardless of who ends up winning the intramural jihad contest.
And as we have seen repeatedly in recent years, the sides are happy to come together to achieve their common goal of killing us and destroying our societies.
The Americans’ avoidance of reality is not unique.
The Europeans also refuse to see it.
Following the jihadist massacres at Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher in Paris in January, French President Francois Hollande insisted that the attackers who killed in the name of Islam had nothing to do with Islam.
After jihadists in London beheaded British soldier Lee Rigby outside his barracks in 2013, British Prime Minister David Cameron insisted that the attack, carried out in the name of Islam, had nothing to do with Islam.
The operational consequences of the West’s refusal to acknowledge the nature of the forces waging war against it have been disastrous.
Radical Islam is an ideology that serves both as an organizing principle for civil societies and a military doctrine. By ignoring it, the US and the rest of the free nations of the world have made it impossible to conceptualize or implement a strategy for either discrediting it or defeating its adherents.
Rather than develop comprehensive plans for dealing with this enemy, the Americans, the Europeans and others have opted for a mix of policies running the spectrum from appeasement to whack-a-mole operations.
Abroad, appeasement has taken its most significant form in the US-led nuclear deal with Iran. As the largest state sponsor of terrorism and the most active radical Islamic imperialist force in the Middle East, Iran is the ground zero of radical Islam. It not only oversees and directs the operations of its puppets, like Syrian President Bashar Assad, and its foreign legions, like Hezbollah. The Iranian regime has also played a key role in developing Muslim Brotherhood offshoots like al-Qaida, which received, and likely continues to receive training and direction from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. As for Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, if Iran had been interested in preventing its rise, IS would never have taken over any territory in either country.
At home, appeasement of radical Islamic forces has involved embracing Muslim Brotherhood front groups and insisting that radical Islamic clerics are moderates because they aren’t pulling any triggers.
The West’s whack-a-mole war against radical Islam at home and abroad has meant that even as one group – like core al-Qaida is cut down – it is swiftly replaced by other groups, like Islamic State. And if IS is eventually cut down, it too will be replaced by another group, and then reconstitute itself as IS when the West’s attention is taken up by the next major group.
Obama has enabled this state of affairs by defining the enemy as narrowly as possible, reducing the whole sphere of radical Islam to a few discrete groups – like al-Qaeda and IS – that he seeks to defeat or contain.
It is not simply that the whack-a-mole strategy doesn’t work. It is self-defeating. Since the radical Islamic trigger pullers in the West are usually no more than a few people who get together to murder people, insisting that someone has to be a card carrying member of a recognized terrorist group before authorities will go after him makes it almost impossible to find operatives and prevent attacks.
The murderers Friday may well never have received formal orders to commit their attacks from a central jihadist headquarters. They may have met at a mosque in Paris or Brussels and decided to do it.
Certainly they needed no advanced training to mow down people eating dinner or watching a rock concert. They didn’t even really need to know how to shoot straight.
As for their explosives vests, all they needed was a guy with a working knowledge of explosives to set them up with the means to turn themselves into human bombs. Maybe he trained in Syria. Maybe he has a degree in chemistry from the Sorbonne.
Maybe he is just good at following YouTube videos.
The most important component of Friday night’s massacre was the terrorists’ radical Islamic motivation.
Their belief in their ideology motivated them to die killing innocent people. Everything else was secondary. They may have been inspired and loosely directed by the heads of IS. But if Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been killed six months ago, they would have found another source of inspiration.
And that’s the main point. While Friday’s killers may have given their allegiance to IS, they were operationally and ideologically all but indistinguishable from their predecessors in the London subways in 2005 and the Madrid commuter rails in 2004 who hailed from al-Qaida. Likewise, while the US may have seriously degraded core al-Qaida in the Middle East over the past seven years, IS in Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Libya is an organic extension of al-Qaida.
To defeat these groups, the US and its allies need to adopt a strategy that is rooted in an acknowledgment of the nature of our true enemy: radical Islam.
Armed with this recognition, the nations of the free world can determine operational guidelines for combating not only specific, discrete groupings of adherents to this ideology, they can develop overall strategies for combating it at home and in the Middle East.
At home, such strategies require Western governments to penetrate, disrupt and destroy radical Islamic networks on the ground in a sustained, concentrated manner. In the Middle East, they require the free world to stop seeking to appease leaders, regimes and militias that support and ascribe to radical Islam.
Sunday night, a group of Parisians stood outside one of the sites of Friday night’s massacre and sang “La Marseilles.” Without fear, a woman garbed in the black robes of radical Islam stepped into the crowd and began bellowing out “Allahu Akbar.” She probably isn’t a card carrying member of IS. Rather, in all likelihood she is just someone who ascribes to radical Islam and so sees France as her enemy.
Assuming the women doesn’t belong to a terrorist group, French officials will not monitor her or her relatives. If she or any of her relatives murder their fellow citizens of France, authorities will probably say they were lone wolves.
Every day the US and its allies maintain their refusal to acknowledge that radical Islam exists and that the regime in Tehran, al-Qaida, IS, Hamas and all the rest are mere expressions of this larger ideology, the danger radical Islam poses to the survival of free societies will continue to mount and grow. Saturday night’s Democratic debate was a depressing reminder how low we have fallen.

A Day In The Life
Up at 8:30 on Friday morning, to the rumbling and clanking of the garbage trucks, and to a sunny, very cool 43°F morning, I grabbed the Turkish Bathrobe, got the heat turned-up, and made OJ, coffee and Corned Beef Hash & Sunny Side-Up Eggs. I scanned the weather and news sites. Email AWOL. Ahhhh, the subhuman, murderous muzzie filth are at it again: slaughtering 27 unarmed, innocent "Infidels", this time in a Mali hotel. The Midwest #8211; specifically Iowa and Northern Illinois #8211; are getting the shit kicked out of them again with blizzards and heavy snow, and we're getting some seriously-cold weather starting this weekend, just in time for Thanksgiving. Perfect.

Up at 8 on Saturday morning, it was noticeably cool in the condo; 29°F outside and I could see a heavy frost coating on everything as I looked out the front door. OJ, coffee and I tried to fire-up the computer. The Samsung 24" SyncMaster 245T Widescreen LCD Monitor had finally given-up the ghost, and was blank after 10mins, so I grabbed the back-up – now to be my primary – Samsung 22" SyncMaster 2243 BWX Widescreen LCD Monitor, and did the 10min swap. Just that 2" smaller difference is remarkable. The 24" 245T was a massive width & height, compared to the 22" 2243 BWX. (Yes, ladies, size does matter.) All the apps and programs had to be resized to fit the smaller screen, and that took some time, as I opened and used them. Finally, coffee was ready and I was just pleased that I'd gotten that swap done without the benefit of caffeine, but getting used to the size differential will take some time. Amazingly, within 15-20mins, Samsung had sent a driver update for the new 22" monitor to the Windows Update section in the Control Panel, and I was notified it was ready-to-install.

Sleeping-in until 9am on Sunday, it was another nippy morning, at 30°F. Robe, heat, OJ, coffee, and I was good for a while. Email was even working. The Midwest was in the early throes of Winter, and we'd get a reprieve from the sudden cold at midweek. I'm ready for Winter, and do enjoy the "season of rest"...

This is winter, which nonetheless brings its own delights.
After listening to a couple hours of Chris Plante Show 3hr Podcasts and reading thru the news sites, I started some laundry loads, and went out for a short walk in the brisk, late morning air, and worked-up an appetite. Back by 1pm, I made Sunny-Side-Up Eggs, Bacon, Grits & Biscuits and listened to Gun Talk Radio from 2-5pm EST, while reviewing/revising the Thanksgiving Thursday's Menu for Dad & Becky, as well as some other paperwork. The series, "Curse of Oak Island", was on again and I watched some of the season 1 episodes until 11, and packed it in for the night.
I was up on Monday morning at 8am, and it was our coldest night yet: still 27°F and very frosty outside. Heat, juice, coffee, the magic robe and I checked my day's to-do list. Email's been working two days in a row. Cold air with us for a few days, then warms-up over Turkey Day. Not much in the news, except Belgium is in total lockdown. Guess I'll take more mags than usual with me later this morning, just in case. I streamed the Chris Plante Show until 11am, and left for Lancaster to meet up with my 2 investment partners. Under $2/gal gas? Not a chance around here.
We had lunch at the convenient, and often good, John Wright Restaurant, and discussed several purchasing opportunities which frankly, sounded pretty good. We drove over to a nearby firearms store to meet a range shooter and collector, who'd be seriously interested in purchasing one or more of the antique firearm collections, if we could get them. Meanwhile, I'd had calls from Rite Aid that the final Rxs were ready for pick-up tomorrow, and I'd plan on that. Back home by 4:45pm, I got the mail, unloaded several stops worth of stuff, and put the Jeep away. It'd be an even colder night, ahead. I got the 3rd and final School/Property Tax payment ready for York County, and ready to mail tomorrow when I'm down south, watched a few episodes of MobSteel until 11:30, and closed down for some sleep. It was snowing lightly as squalls blew thru the area, and I went upstairs to bed. Nice.
Awake at 7am on Tuesday, I went for the heat right away. 29°F and cloudy – sure looked like snow, but the squalls were too far north – and the heat felt good. The Del Monte® Mango/Passionfruit Chunks were a nice change, and I made the coffee double strong. Not much on the weather maps, but some ugly-looking stuff coming our way by the weekend; at least Thanksgiving will be nice. And the Middle East craphole is still boiling over; this Turkey vs Russia bullshit won't end well. Shortly after Benghazi, I posed this theory in an October 2013 "Journal", and now Drudge is carrying a teaser about the 0sambo/Clinton/US-fueled arming of the muzzies, and much more here. Natch. I checked my to-do list for the day, and needed to drive down to Rite Aid in Stewartstown, and then get a few things at Saubel's Market, next door, for Thursday's Thanksgiving Dinner with Dad & Becky. I left at 9:30am.
The trip south on Rt-24 was nice, as traffic was light, but by midday, it would begin to get heavy, as the "T-Day Travel Rush" will be underway. Business taken care of at those two places, I made a nice canned foods donation to the local Food Bank box at Saubel's, and headed north back to my place. After getting things unloaded and put away, I made Almond-Crusted Salmon in Hollandaise, w/ Roasted Potatoes, streamed the morning's missed Chris Plante Show Podcast, did some paperwork and finalized Thursday's...

For the rest of the evening, I watched History's Curse of Oak Island and Hunting Hitler, both fascinating series. Tomorrow's a busy clean-up, kitchen & DR prep, and set-up day for Thursday's Dinner. By 1:15am, I'd had enough and closed down, armed the place, and went up for some sleep.
I slept-in until 8am on Wednesday, a bit warmer outside at 43°F, and sunny morning. The usual OJ, coffee, Eggs Benedict & HomeFries Potatoes, weather news and email (still working) routine. I had condo chores to get done, get the kitchen and DR prepped for tomorrow's Thanksgiving dinner, and just as I got underway, Choice Security's Operation Center called with an ***Intruder Alert*** at the Old 20ac GC&N Complex, 15 miles south in Winterstown. Damn. I told them not to request police or fire assistance until I arrived on-site, and I would make that decision.
Leaving immediately for I-83 South, I got off at the Glen Rock/Rt-216 exit, drove east on Rt-216 to Rt-24 and south to the Complex; 15mins instead of the 35-45min trek on Rt-24. I had the Kimber 1911 .45cal ACP Twins and extra mags, along and drove thru the grounds, went into the Main Building and cleared it and the Main Greenhouse. I checked the other 4 massive Production Greenhouses, the Old Landscape Building and the Vehicle Buildings. Nothing. Back by 12:30pm, I streamed the Rush Show until 3pm, then replayed the morning's missed Chris Plante Show 3hr Podcast, while I got back to condo chores, cleaning and prep work in the kitchen. At 3pm, I took a break and made a Turkey Club w/ Fries, checked the news to see if the Middle East shithole had blown-up yet; too bad, it hadn't quite, but I lighting candles. I managed to get everything done by 5:45, and decided to give my back a rest, turning on an ongoing "American Pickers" marathon, with new episodes in the evening. I watched until 12:30am, then shut down, armed the place and called it a day.
A new ABC/CNN/NYTimes Poll reported that 87% of Americans said it's too early to be playing Christmas Music, but let's talk more about the 2016 Presidential Race, which has been ongoing since 2012. Heh.
Up at 7am on Thursday, it was a cool 27°F and very foggy start to the day. After OJ and coffee, I started the stuffed turkey breast roasting for 2hrs, untented it and roasted another 30mins, got all the sides prepared, wine decanted, and Dad & Becky arrived at 12:45pm. We had a great Thanksgiving Dinner, exchanged cards and spent some quality time together. They left at 4, clean-up took two dishwasher loads, and I was done by 6. I watched "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II" on AMC, until 11:00pm, and bagged it for the night.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and I have a eye Dr's app't, a new computer monitor arriving, a realtor meeting and another with my 2 investment buddies, and some minor Winter prep work to do here at the condo. Looks like cooler weather and rain arriving for at least part of the week, but no sign of the real cold stuff, just yet.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
