Severe thunderstorms blew through the York (PA) area, last Thursday evening and Friday morning, and several tornadoes touched-down, did damage, and were 'missed' by the local, weather-spokesmouths. Hail piled-up in some areas to 2-3" deep, and 60+ mph winds made the rain 'horizontal'. We got 2½" at the GC&N's weather station; Lancaster recorded 2½", and some areas got over 3". Yikes.
I finished-up a boatload of payroll, billing and estimates, on Friday, and went to Mario's viewing, with Alan, my LSCP Foreman and friend of 16 years. It was emotionally-wrenching for us, and all there. I was through the 'wringer' on Wednesday, when Mario died, and it's detail is in last week's Journal. I've volunteered to care for (their) Carol's extensive 3-4 acre gardens. It was good to finally get home, and get a 2-hour call from Dolly. Made my day, Kiddo!
I'm seeing more and more geese and ducks flying south, in that ancient "V" formation, these cool days. I think they know that we're going to get an early Winter. The trees are beginning to turn color, slightly. The night temps are now down in the 40s, with day temps in the upper-60°Fs and lower-70°Fs. We'll be getting out first taste of frost, with 1-2 weeks, and the trees will start to turn very quickly, due to the 'drought from hell' we've been through.
York's Annual (Harley-Davidson) Bike Night was last Saturday, and the entire city opened its doors to many thousands of bikers and their 'rolling thunder', and promptly messed-up the downtown traffic situation, which I religiously stay away from, when there's an event like that in town, for a weekend or more.
We do landscape projects, Monday thru Thursday, and tree installations and deliveries, on Friday. We're booked through Thanksgiving week, November 20th for all landscaping jobs; and through the week of November 6th, for simple tree installations. I have a bad feeling that a brutally-snowy and cold Winter, will come early, this year. JMO. I've extended my personal guarrantee that any and all "booked landscape jobs", if we lose the weather this Fall, will receive the same 25% Off Nursery Stock prices, should they be re-scheduled to Spring 2007.
Business was short and brisk, last weekend. With the cooler, wetter weather, slightly (11.34% YTD) fewer people are coming out in a retail sales mode, and purchasing more trees, than in the previous years. Our landscape business, thanks in part to James, my Staff LSCP Designer, is once-again, almost back-to-"normal". He's done a "yeoman's job", and taken a lot of weight off of Alan and me. I'm just afraid that we'll lose the weather, and short—circuit all those paying, small-to-medium jobs, into Spring 2007, which we missed in 2006, due to the loss of my two, most-experienced cresw chiefs. If you're a 'Regular Reader' of my weekly John's mJournal, you know what I'm talking about.
I heard the first news reports of an Amish school shooting, in Lancaster County, just a few miles east of me, in a town called Paradise, just after 12noon on Monday. How can people do this to three little children; baby girls, especially? I was bummed-out for the rest of the day, as I read the story unfold on this FR.com thread. Sorry for that rant, but the whole scenario was just down the highway from me. I watched, listened and read it as it happened, all day Monday, as it unfolded, getting nothing but more and more bad news. I was upset into Tuesday, as afourth girl died, and shortly afterward, a fifth girl died; both from headwounds when the subhuman murderer shot them, execution-style. A sixth (of 10) was also taken off life-support and brought home to die. I both weep and pray for their young, innocent souls. The funerals started yesterday, Thursday, in Lancaster County. I have newfound respect and admiration for the Amish, just down the road from here.
Gas prices at the pump, have dropped another 4¢-plus, just this past week, here in the York (PA) area. Unleaded Regular is now at $2.25/gal. Unleaded Plus is now at $2.35/gal and Unleaded Premium is now at $2.55gal. Both diesel and kerosene are hovering around $2.65/gal. I haven't seen gas this cheap since February, or so. The refineries are switching over to producing home heating oil and K1 kerosene, in anticipation of the coming Winter months, and supplies of driving fuel are dropping, by percent produced. Oh yes: it's Bush's fault!
Temps have been like a rollercoaster, over the past 6-7 days. Plants don't know whether to get ready for a 'Winter rest', or wake-up and begin pushing out new growth. From last week's low-50°Fs to this week's mid-80°Fs, it's been a wild ride with the vascillating temps, and there isn't a damned thing any of us can do about it. I quickly revert back to The Farmer's Almanac's (87% right!) prediction that The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Regions will experience a topsy-turvy Winter, with higher-than-usual snow, and lower-than-usual temps. Great, huh? Oh crap, if that's true.BR>
