The next president and Congress will inherit what President Obama left behind. Whether Democrat or Republican, the president will have no choice other than to try to undo much of what Obama has wrought. But can he or she?
THE MIDDLE EAST
The policy of “leading from behind” and the crudity of “We came, we saw, he [Qaddafi] died” have left a human tragedy in Libya. Backing the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt was an inexplicable choice, and it almost ruined the country. The United States did not need to hound and jail an innocent video maker in order to concoct a myth to cover up the culpable lax security in Benghazi. Yemen was strangely declared a model of our anti-terrorism efforts — just weeks before it ignited into another Somalia or Congo. ISIS was airily written off as a jayvee bunch as it spread beyond Syria and Iraq. There is little need to do a detailed comparison of Iraq now and Iraq in February 2009 (when it was soon to be the administration’s “greatest achievement,” a “stable” and “self-reliant” nation); the mess in between is attributable to Obama’s use of the aftermath of the Iraq War for pre-election positioning. Ordering Assad to flee while ignoring the violence in Syria and proclaiming a faux red line has now tragically led to a million refugees in Europe (and another 4 million in the neighborhood) and more than 200,000 dead. Israel is now considered not an ally, not even a neutral, but apparently a hostile state worthy of more presidential invective than is Iran. We have few if any reliable friends any more in the Gulf. Iran will become a nuclear power. The only mystery over how that will happen is whether Obama was inept or whether he deliberately sought to make the theocracy some sort of a strategic power and U.S. ally. The Middle East over the next decade may see three or four additional new nuclear powers. The Russia of kleptocrat Vladimir Putin is seen in the region as a better friend than is the U.S. — and certainly a far more dangerous enemy to provoke.
There is no easy cure for all this; it will take years just to sort out the mess.
THE LAW
There will be a temptation for a reform president to use the lawless means that Obama has bequeathed — executive orders to unconstitutionally bypass Congress; arbitrary suspension or simple non-enforcement of laws, depending on where we are in the national election cycle; exemption of party loyalists from legal accountability — to achieve the noble aim of restoring legality. But such short-cuts to reform would be a terrible mistake.
It would be quite illegal to ignore emissions standards the way Obama has ignored the Defense of Marriage Act; or to reduce, by fiat, the EPA to the present toothless status of ICE; or to allow a new sort of “sanctuary city” to refuse to marry gays, in the manner of San Francisco’s refusing to hand over illegal immigrants; or to arbitrarily remove particular owls and newts from the protection of the Endangered Species Act as Obama has picked and chosen which elements of the Affordable Care Act at any particular time he considered legally non-binding. Payback is very tempting, but eight more years of it would ensure that we would become another Zimbabwe or Venezuela. Instead, the next president must, as never before, obey both the spirit and the very letter of the law to restore to us what Obama has almost destroyed.
RACE
Polls and pundits agree that racial relations are now at their worst since the riots of the 1970s. Barack Obama in the 2008 campaign blew long and hard the dog whistle of racial polarization: clingers, the not-to-be-disowned Rev. Jeremiah Wright, typical white person, bring a gun to a knife fight, get in their faces. He has never stopped since. The president kept at it when he intervened in the Skip Gates farce, or editorialized about skin color in the ongoing and volatile Trayvon Martin case, or institutionalized the lies of Ferguson that begat the “Hands up; don’t shoot” mythology — and the tragedies that followed. The message was always that race is still a barrier to success in America and that, logically, only fealty to the Obama administration could improve things for people of color.
Obama did not phone the family of Kate Steinle — murdered as a direct result of sanctuary-city practices approved by his administration — or the families of police officers slain as a result of the hate speech generated by the Black Lives Matter movement. But he has also largely ignored nearly 7,000 blacks whose lives have been taken by other blacks. In some sense, Obama proved a captive of his own political matrix. The Obama election strategy — successful in 2008 and 2012, a failure in 2010 and 2014 — was predicated on upping the polarizing rhetoric, extending social services, and embracing hip The next president should take a hiatus from our racial obsessions, and simply try treating Americans as if their race or ethnic background were irrelevant. popular culture to achieve historic minority voter turnout and unprecedented block-voting patterns.
But in the blowback, the liberal Congress and many of the Democratic state legislatures were wiped out, and the country has been split apart. Obama’s legacy to the Democratic party is the loss of the white working classes, and the permanent need to achieve massive minority turnout and absolute liberal fealty at the polls. To do that will probably require institutionalized open borders, habitual racial haranguing, and the courting of the Al Sharptons of the race industry. Whether Obama knew that such racial voting would not be completely transferrable to his Democratic successors, while the hostility it engendered most certainly would be, remains a mystery. But that paradox raises what is perhaps the central issue of his presidency: whether he was a short-sighted incompetent naïf or a mean-spirited and narcissistic nihilist. Or both?

DEBT
We will reach $20 trillion in debt on Obama’s watch. He ran on the issue of national debt, blasting George W. Bush for using a “Bank of China” credit card “by his lonesome” to bankrupt the country. Indeed, a penny-pinching Senator Obama had voted to shut down the government rather than raise the debt ceiling. But as president, Obama may well accrue more debt than all previous presidents combined. His legacy will be that he made George W. Bush’s budgetary indulgence look sober and judicious compared with his own. Only the Federal Reserve’s near-zero interest rates for seven years — along with the low energy prices that came despite, not because of, his efforts — have saved Obama, and staved off the stagnation of having well over 90 million able-bodied Americans permanently out of the work force. When interest rates climb to 4 or 5 percent, the next president will face a budgetary crisis, augmented by Obama’s failure to address entitlement spending. We are in for rough times; whether Obama will get out ahead of the reckoning is unknown.
In other areas, the Obama agenda is falling of its own weight. Obamacare is becoming irrelevant, because of both noncompliance and soaring costs. As the poor discover that even with subsidies they have to pony up considerable deductibles and copays, and must actually pay some premiums, they increasingly head for the free clinics or back to the emergency rooms. Even Democrats will not rue too much the spontaneous unwinding of Obamacare, given that much of the public is doing its best to ignore it.
The restoration of defense spending will follow the Carter-to-Reagan pattern, albeit more slowly given the specter of unsustainable national debt. The next president will address the tax code, and the solution won’t be Bernie Sanders’s dream of a 90 percent income-tax rate. Even Joe Biden cannot run on Obama’s stellar economic record — pretending that the middle class has been in ascendance since 2009, extolling the advantages of more debt, or proclaiming the necessity of even stricter environmental regulations or more subsidies to Solyndra-like green companies.
There is not much of an idea any longer of investigative journalism. The press for the last seven years has largely chosen to become a Ministry of Truth. One reason why Donald Trump soars is that, after the press’s canonization of Obama, the public relishes Trump’s contempt for the media — and the latter have now lost the moral credibility to critique any candidate on the grounds of dishonesty, hypocrisy, narcissism, mendacity, or polarization of the electorate.
The tragic mess of 2009–2016 is ending, and soon the cleanup will begin — accompanied by stupefaction as to just how much will have to be thrown away.

A Day In The Life
I slept-in until 8:30am on Friday, half expecting the garbage trucks to wake me up earlier, but no deal. Because of Monday's Labor Day Holiday, they were a day behind, and I slept like a baby a rock... just fine. Still half asleep, I made OJ, coffee and while having my first mug, remembered that today was 9/11/01: 14 Years Later, and woke up quickly. I had goose bumps, as I do on every 9/11 Anniversary. Damn. As I scanned the weather and news, every CATV show was having 9/11 Remembrance Specials, the Networks was also well into their day's "9/11 Memorial" programming, all Talk Radio was also on 9/11 Specials. I decided to take the two motorcycles and one car, and set-up 3 Excel Spreadsheets to analyze the multiple cost scenarios for restoration in two ways: 1) Full/partial restoration, and 2) "Resto-mod", all new mechanicals - brakes, AC, motor rebuilds, exhaust, carbs, ignition, interiors (if needed), paint (if needed), and hundreds of trim and accessory parts. I spent 4 hours inputting data from parts and price lists, to get as many financial scenarios as I could. After studying all of the possible restoration scenarios for the Vette and 2 bikes, I decided to step even further away from it, for now. At this point in time, I just don't have the "wherewithal" anymore, to suffer a possible huge loss, in case things went sideways. For the rest of the evening, I watched a few episodes of "American Pickers" from the YouTube MotherLode Site, and called it quits at 12 midnight.
Once again, I slept until 9am on Saturday morning, got up to a chilly 51°F and heavy rain, as a massive t-storm front moved thru the region. OJ, coffee, Scrapple, Homefries, Toast & Sunny-Side-Up Eggs hit the spot. The rain would be steady-to-deluge, all day. I drove over to Dad's at 10:30, helped with a few projects, checked his cataract surgery date for next week, and left for some errands. Back home by 3pm, I had paperwork and filing to do, bills to pay and field strip & clean my Kimber 1911 Stainless "Custom TLE™ II" (Tactical Law Enforcement) .45cal ACP, from shooting with Dad, a few weeks ago. For what was left of the evening, I caught the news, weather and a History Channel special, until 11pm.
It was another downright chilly Sunday morning, at 53°F; I got up at 8am and grabbed my Turkish Bathrobe. I turned-on the furnace, and even thought about putting the new electric blanket on my bed. Brrrrrrrr, for mid-September. The OJ was good, the hot coffee was great, and the Scrambled Eggs, French Toast & Sausage really filled me up. Not much news; weather forecast was for mild days in the 70s and cool nights in the 50s. Fall "officially arrives" on the 23rd, but we're getting an early peek. Later in the morning after temps had climbed into the mid-70s, I did a couple loads of laundry, opened-up the condo windows and back door to get some fresh air, and went out for a walk. An hour later, when I got back, there was a notice from the paving/topsealing company that for the next 2-3 days, we'd have to park elsewhere until all driveways on my side of the street had their driveways topcoated and it set-up. I had the cleaning ladies coming in tomorrow at 8:30am, and parking would be restricted on my street. No matter, as I'd be down in Southern York County most all day. After grilling a Ribeye Steak, w/ Pasta & Green beans for lunch, I re-opened the car/bike restoration spreadsheets in MS Excel, and spent some time going thru the good/bad scenarios, yet again. Soon enough, it was 11:30pm, and lights out.
Up at 6 on Monday morning, I had juice and coffee, checked the weather and news, and 'to-do' list for the day. 47°F; and very chilly outside. After 3yrs using CFL bulbs, the GC&N's Main Building is going to need replacements for the Winter months, so I don't have to do that almost-monthly routine during those cold, snowy months, as I did for 22+ years. I added that to the list for next month, before Winter gets here. As I was getting ready to leave, the garage door opener's overhead chain rail pulled out of the wall and stopped working. As I got onto the old GC&N Complex, I got a call from one of the would-be purchasers, and she said her partner had gotten cold feet about the deal; he doesn't want to put-up everything he has to secure the bank loans. The sale falls thru. Back to square one. Double dammit. I notified Dad and my attorney. I'm not in a "black funk"; I just need to figure out what to do, as "Plan B". Triple dammit.
I had some errands in northern MD and southern PA to do, and in between stops, I kept noticing more and more empty commercial buildings, industrial centers, single buildings, shopping centers, strip malls, office complexes... the economy's still getting worse, not better. The increase in "For Sale", "Lease", "For Rent", "Closed" and other signs of distress, is obvious to anyone with a sentient, functioning brain. It's eerie to see it increasing. I was back home around 3pm, parked in the street, had some Chinese Dim Sum: Pork Fried Rice, Steamed Pork Dumplings, Shrimp Toast & Lo Mein I picked-up on the day's trip, and opened the condo up for fresh air in the 65°F; temps. I had carb overload, and laid down on the LR couch for a nap. I woke-up at 7, in the dark and 56°F;, got the place closed-up, and rather than fire-up the furnace, grabbed a sweatshirt to enjoy the coolness. I was already over my funk, and realized that I once again needed a commercial realtor to help market the GC&N Property; I just couldn't do it myself. I heated-up some more Dim Sum, and watched hours and hours of "Rusted Development" on Discovery; that's the kind of place I'd need to do the "barn find" restorations I've been obsessing

The lawnmower crews woke me at 8:45am on Tuesday, after a night of dreams about BBQ and other weirdness. Heh. Another cool, 57°F;, sunny day's start, mid-70s forecast, and all windows are open for the day. After fresh strawberries and coffee, and an English Muffin w/ Butter, I went out for a walk to Springettsbury Park, over to The York Galleria and back home by 11. The left hip was aching, but some aspirin and a cold-pak assuaged that within 2 hours. I had some bills to pay and get ready, and filing to finish-up, so while doing those I streamed the usual 9am - 12noon EST streaming Chris Plante Show, WMAL-DC until the noon news came on CATV. I made a Bacon Cheddar-Cheeseburger w/ Fries and a Linguini Basil Salad for lunch, laid down on the LR couch for a short nap, and fell asleep until 6pm. I got a call from a friend who's got a Harley, and wanted to know if I'd come over tomorrow to help "wrench" on it with some new parts; I said I could. For the rest of the evening, I watched some specials on NatGeoTV Channel, and closed down at 11pm.
Up at 7am on Wednesday, a carbon copy of the past 3 days, while drinking OJ and waiting for coffee to steep, I opened the front door and while looking out, I saw that they'd removed the driveway tape, so apparently the seal coating had set-up. The morning's English Muffin w/ Marmalade was good, and I checked the news and weather. Opening the cellphone, there were a slew of messages waiting and I went to voicemail. Magically, packages started arriving at my door, from the FedEx and UPS demi-gods. The news reminded me that there was another GOP debate on tonite, from 8-11pm. Garage door repairman coming 8-9am tomorrow, not today. Realizing that I can't market the place to such a wide audience as a medium or large commercial realtor, I have two meetings today with two new commercial realtors, about representing me in the sale of the GC&N Property, now that my independent deal's fallen thru. First meeting at 11am; second meeting at 2pm. I left for the 11:00 meeting. Went well, so I ran some errands, stopped at my barbershop, but it was full, and I'll go on to the 2:00 meeting. That also went well, so I thought about another realtor I'd overlooked and called her. Tomorrow, since she'll be back from Georgia later tonite.
By 4:30, I stopped at one of my car/bike business venture friends, and sat down for a heart-to-heart business talk. That didn't go so well. He and the other partner aren't happy that I'm not taking the lead, and putting-up my $100,000 for uninspected vehicles, basically just a quick visual and cursory eyeballing. I can't do that. I want the car(s) and bikes for 2-3 days, with my choice of mechanics to properly examine them, mechanically and body/frame/drive/brake systems. I can't go into it blind at $100k, WON'T do it. I gave him an ultimatum, my terms and a schedule for proper and thorough examining the vehicles... or nothing from me.
By 6:30, I'd had enough of meetings and negotiations, went home and heated-up some more Chinese Dim Sum: Pork Fried Rice, Steamed Pork Dumplings, Shrimp Toast & Lo Mein, settled into my kitchen's computer corner command center, and checked email, which seems to be working lately. The CNN Republican Debate #2 - Live Feed - Reagan Library went on until almost 11:15pm. A somewhat better moderated format than the Fox News Kelly Bitch ambush crap two weeks ago, it was the same crap, just wrapped in different paper: pit the contestants against each other, and avoid debating/criticizing 0sambo's policies, mistakes, fuck-ups and blunders. What happened last night is what continues to happen when you let the Left run a “debate” for the Right. It wasn't a debate. It was an elementary school “Show and Tell” session with the commentators acting as provocateurs and hecklers. As for Fox News, it was CNN's highest rated show, ever. Who won the Drudge Poll? Up at 6am on Thursday, I had some things to get ready before the garage door service guy arrived between 8-9am. After a lousy night's sleep, I needed copious amounts of OJ and coffee. Bad news is that I need a new $550 g-door opener to replace the original 25yr old unit. Appointment for motor/chain units is set for next week, but at least the old unit is cobbled together to last a few more days. I left for Walt's Barbershop in Red Lion, at 11. He was having pewrsonal computer trouble, so I spent 45mins and repaired his laptop, and spiced it up a bit with a new browser, MalwareBytes app and a better anti-virus program. After the haircut, I drove to the Rite Aid in Stewartstown, picked-up the Rxs, did some food shopping at Saubel's Market, and headed back home. Back by 1:30, there was a huge Allen Bros Meats shipment styrofoam cooler in-a-box on my doorstep to unpack and get into the garage's Kenmore 15 cu. ft. Chest Freezer (it runneth over), unload the Jeep and put the stuff
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", with a realtor meeting on Monday, a new garage door opener on Tuesday, an eye dr's visit for me on Wednesday to check on the right eye's remaining 2-of-5 floaters, and a meeting with two friends about the cars/bikes purchases. For now, I'm out as a participant on purchasing, restoration and flipping. Darn.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs. I was hugely-pleased, a little stunned at the secrecy, but half-expecting a juicy trove of treasures.
It is called the Center of Military History. It is located 30 minutes outside Washington, D.C., at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The building itself is very nondescript.
But behind a series of highly alarmed doors and long, cement, camera-laden hallways. It is the highly sophisticated, climate-controlled treasure room where the army keeps its most precious artifacts.
The facility was built for $24 million in 2010. The cavernous warehouse is typically shrouded in total darkness. Motion lights illuminate only the areas in which someone is walking.
If I could get tickets, I'd fork over my first-born child. Oh wait; I don't have one. Heh. I'd go there in a heartbeat.
Some People Just Need Killing
It's not my intention to be the judge here — that's God's "job" — but rather to "hasten the meeting" so that He can send the following subhuman filth to the "Fires of Hell", "River or Lake of Sulphur", or whatever He deems appropriate. Society's innocents — our precious, defenseless children and the frail, defenseless elderly — must be protected from predators, murderers, rapists, robbers and other subhuman filth, at all times and at any cost, IMO.
The 6th Commandment actually says: "Thou Shalt Not Murder". It does NOT say, "Thou Shalt Not Kill." I personally don't consider any summary-execution — except by subhuman, murderous muslim/islamic pigshit — as murder, in any way, shape or form. It's "Due-Justice-For-Crimes-On-This-Earth", IMO.
