The number of people applying for unemployment benefits jumped last week to the highest level in three months. It's a sign that the Most people doesn't have trouble seeing what's and right and wrong; doing it is sometimes complicated, but knowing what's right usually isn't so hard. The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications rose by 11,000 to a seasonally-adjusted 428,000/ month. The week included the 4-day Labor Day Holiday, too. The economy added zero net jobs in August, the worst showing since September 2010. Around The Garden Center
I watched Season One's First 4 Episodes (DVD-Disc 1 of 6 in the Set) of "Blue Bloods" DVD on Thursday evening, and now I'm "hooked on it", same as I am on the "Jesse Stone" Series, both on CBS-TV. Donnie Wahlberg is fantastic, as is Tom Selleck (natch). By 9pm, Murphy was bugging the crap out of me to go upstairs to sleep, and I relented. I'll start the 2nd Disc on Friday and finish all of them over the weekend.
It was 43°F outside and a very chilly 68°F inside the condo when I got up at 4:15am, so I turned-on the heat to 79°F and it felt good. Fall is passing quickly and cold weather will be here all too soon. With the new Amana 64-seer Furnace – the most efficient Energy-Saver® unit on the market anywhere – from nearby Hopewell HVAC, plus the Amana 16-seer 2-ton AC unit – also the most efficient Energy-Saver® unit on the market anywhere – I've had 2+ years of wonderful comfort in all seasons since their installation. Hopewell are the best folks I've dealt with in 20+ years, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Within minutes, my 2,800 SqFt condo was toasty-warm and both Murphy and I were happy campers.
After watering and feeding Murphy, I made a quick breakfast and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from whole beans) with my Chemex® Drip System, scanned the weather and news sites, especially checking the 5-10 day, long-range day weather forecast since we're getting so far behind on tree installations and landscape jobs. The excessive rain and cool temps have just arrived too-quickly and we're way, way behind our normal schedule. I'm going to have to reschedule some or many of next week's jobs, today, because of it. I truly hate this part of the job.
With sunrise now coming at 6:48am, I decided to wait until at least 6:15 or later to leave, as I hate driving in the dark. (Did I ever mention that before?) And sunset is now around 7:14, instead of 8:15pm or later. Winter is slowly-approaching. I had a shitload boatload of tree installs and landscape jobs to reschedule as soon as I got into work, and Alan, Arthur and Jon got busy digging 2 large Purple Fountain Beeches (Fagus sylvatica "Purple Fountain") for the day's installation and Jap Maple pruning jobs. From NWS' Long-Range Forecast page, it looks like we'll have a respite from the rains, sunny but very cool days and nights, yet at least we can get the rain-delayed work done now.
Kim was off and Alan left after digging the trees, as he had another funeral to attend. Arthur & Jon did the delivery and pruning in Maryland, and a local mulch delivery after the returned. Dad was in to do payroll, and Steffi took Kim's place for the day, since she and her husband have a friend's wedding to attend in Maryland. Dad, Kim and Jon would be in over the weekend, as would I. Now I'm thinking of closing on Sundays again, in October, since it isn't all that busy, while Saturday usually is. I could use the extra sleep and save the expense of being open and not doing that much business, since I can't economically-justify it, at this point.
Just after I finished lunch around 11:30am, I had a very special visitor: Jim Jenkins, the Owner of a very profitable, "special-niche" high-end garden center in the Pittsburgh area, and a "John's Journal" reader. He'd been attending a trade show in Baltimore, and upon the advice of a mutual nursery rep friend, stopped-by to say hello and see my operation. I was honored and flattered that he did so, gave him the tour of both the 20-acre Complex, my Canon Dbl-Door Gun Safe and we spent almost 3 hours together talking about "things". I have tentative plans to visit him in May, depending upon my "situation" here, when he's "busy" with the *Spring Rush/Fury*, as well as stop at some other friends' homes in the Pittsburgh area to say hi, now that I'll be "retired" from this place. I decided to go to my usual Church Meeting on Friday at 8pm, and try to get back to some semblance of "normalcy", after skipping it due to last weekend's Tropical Storm Lee's rain and flood damage, when I had elderly Parents to prep for the coming storm, and 2 friends to help with storm clean-up, plus the GC&N Complex' clean-up. I was back by 9:30, shut-down the condo, turned-up the heat to 79°F for 15-20 minutes to take the chill-off the condo, and called it a day around 10pm. It was only 43°F outside, with possible frost predicted in outlying rural areas, and I slept well knowing that Winter wasn't all that far off. Murphy likes the warmth.
I managed to sleep through to the 4:30am alarm, get Murphy watered & fed, make Eggs, Bacon, Grits & Butter for breakfast, French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from whole beans) with my Chemex® Drip System, for myself, and since there wouldn't be a 7:30am weekday meeting with Alan over the weekend, took my time scanning the numerous weather and news sites, which I frequent via Opera v11.51's Browser with "Speed Dial". I like it over any other browser out there; smaller footprint, safer, more secure and much faster than anything else available. I gave Jim a "demo" of it when he visited on Friday, and sent him the URL to get and install it. I left for work at 6:30am, still dark and downright (((cold))) outside.
Saturday truly sucked. It was "supposed" to be mostly sunny, a pleasant 65°F and "October-like"; instead, it was cold, rainy and miserable. I counted 11 of my GC&N's umbrellas opened-up/unfolded and drying-off in the Main Retail VWGH as I was closing-down the place at 2:30. I was soaked from helping several Customers select and load shrub purchases, having waded through chest-high, wet shrubs to choose/tag the nicest ones for them, and then load them into their inappropriate vehicles. Why can't people have pick-ups or SUVs with trailers, to make it easier? Why do I have to load 15 medium and large shrubs into a Volkswagen Beetle or Honda Civic? I could tell you stories of trying to load B&B trees into sport scars; didn't work-out at all. I'm not going to miss this crap, when I finally close it all down, in a few weeks.
I decided to stop at the Men's Wearhouse and at Boscov's Men's Dept, on my way home, to look for a simple, basic tan corduroy sport coat, in a 48R, large enough to accommodate my Concealed Carry Weapon (PA-CCW Permit since 1990), the Kimber 1911 "Eclipse Target II" .45cal ACP, in a Galco Paddle FED121 Holster for the 5" Kimber, and my Galco Paddle Dual 8-Round Mag Carrier. Not a frigging chance – suede (hate it), linen (which I have), leather (got two), cotton (got one), wool (also have three) – everything and anything except corduroy. Even the venerable Jos A Banks Men's Stores don't carry cord sports coats or blazers, yet. And every damned coat/jacket is cut differently from "name brand" to "name brand", and they're all made in that f•cking shithole, China! Every Italian, British, Scottish, American "name brand" is made in that f•cking, stinking hellhole, China, by the murderous Chi-Comms! Well, at least I was starting to dry-off by walking around those stores and The Galleria Mall, looking for a simple tan cord sports coat, getting absolutely nowhere and hugely-frustrated. When I worked in NYC for 17 years, I could find *exactly* what I wanted and have it bought inside of 10 minutes, from one of the many fine clothiers.
I finally gave-up at 4:30, went home and took a Rx 10mg Valium®, shaved, showered and grabbed some fresh clothes. I also did 2 loads of laundry, swept-out the garage, vacuumed the Jeep's interior, re-fed Murphy and by 9pm, I was tired and headed-up to sleep. I wanted to get-up early, go food shopping, and had to be into work by 10:15, to open by 11am. Murphy was right on my heels.
I was up at 4am to feed & water Murphy, went back to bed and slept-in until 7:30, turned-up the heat as it was only 45°F outside and chilly in the condo. While water was boiling for coffee and grits, cleaned-out Murphy's 2 litter boxes in the basement, washed-up with SoftSoap Anti-Bacterial®, and made OJ, breakfast "Mother Nature's In Charge; We're Just Along For The Ride." – John Shelley II, circa-1991 and coffee. I scanned the weather and news sites, and got ready for the quick trip to Weis Market in East York; I only needed a few things, but had to get another 125-lbs of fresh Florida Oranges so I can make my Fresh-Squeezed OJ. The rinds go in a plastic bag with me everyday to the GC&N's massive compost pile (click on lower slide show), as my "daily contribution". Heh.
I arrived at the Complex at 10am, went in through "the secret back way" (Jim saw "it" on Friday), since I don't open until 11am, and began opening-up the Complex, a job which takes around 20-30 minutes. There are a lot of "tasks" to do, for one person and I do it every day, at 6:30am; Sundays at 10am. Kim was in, and Dad arrived at 10:45am with a newer (old) HP 2600bn LaserJet Printer® from his Home-Office, to replace our now-malfunctioning HP 1600bn LaserJet Printer. I set it up, the #2 Front Counter Computer's WIN-XP Pro® (I use WIN-7 Pro® in my Office) "found the new device" and installed the appropriate drivers and we're back-in-business, printing label/signs/tags for plant material. Oooooh-rah! Finally, something went right. I'll buy him a new replacement HP DeskJet 3000 Printer®, like the one I have in my Office; he doesn't need that expensive LaserJet unit at his Home-Office Study, anyway. Simpler is better.
I spent almost 2 hours juggling, re-sorting and re-organizing the next 4 weeks' schedules, checking and reorganizing the Front Counter Files: "Delivery & Installation", "Customer Pick-Up", "Hold 2011", "Mulch & Topsoil Delivery", and getting all the coming 2 weeks' schedules posted on my Office 'fridge, and tree install/landscape job paperwork for this week, laid-out for Alan and the Landscape Crew, so there wouldn't be any confusion or screw-ups. It's one of my many faults/habits: organization. It looked like another week of rain and t-storms, which would screw-up my best-laid-out plans; just something more to deal with.
Finally, Sunday was a nice day, with temps in the mid-60s, sunny and very pleasant, as *Saturday should have been*, according to the screwed-up local weather forecasts. We had a nice number of retail sales and pick-ups from Saturday's sales, but I have to keep reminding myself that Sunday is ***Pro Football Day*** – Steelers, Eagles or Ravens vs someone else – and everyone stays home, BBQs, drinks lots of beer and watches the game(s) on TV. Personally, I despise all so-called Next time you're thinking about buying some DVDs, try these: the 7-Part "Jesse Stone" Series and the 1st Season of "Blue Bloods" TV show. If you watch them, don't like them and don't want them as a permanent part of your own DVD Collection, I'll personally buy them back from you and you're out nothing. Promise. "pro sports"; they're all grossly-overpaid, whining, criminal crybabies who should be digging ditches for a living, IMO. So Sunday afternoons are only for the "hardcore gardeners", and it's now fairly quiet around here, this time of year. I'll probably be closing-down on Sundays in October and forcing the business in on Saturdays. Oh BTW, that's ***Penn State Football Day*** for anyone around this area, so we're almost doubly-screwed on Saturday afternoons, too. Maybe if I just *gave free stuff away*, we'd get some business in on those "football days"? Nah; won't happen. If I close on Sundays in October, I'll be heading back-up to "The Cabin" right after work on Saturday, as I used to do over the Summer and Winter months. I need that "virtual getaway" right now, more than ever in these depressing final days and weeks.
On Sunday at 5pm, I finally got around to watching the rest of Season One's Next 4 Episodes (DVD-Discs 2 & 3 of 6 in the Set) of "Blue Bloods" DVD, as I'd planned to on Saturday or Sunday. I'll finish DVD 3'd last 2 episodes, and continue-on with Discs 4,5 & 6 this week in the evenings. I'M NOW HOOKED ON THAT SERIES! Wow, what a fantastic TV show! I'm soooooo sorry that I missed it when it was on CBS, but now I'm "catching-up".
I had everything laid-out for an early breakfast, turned-up the condo's heat to 78°F for an hour to take the chill off the place, needed to get into the Office to think about/reflect upon "an offer" I had on the Complex on Sunday afternoon, and just have some quiet time to myself. Besides, Murphy was all over me "like white-on-rice", to come upstairs for some sleep, so I closed-down at 8:30pm and headed upstairs.
After a night of "weird dreams", I was up at 4:30am with the alarm, watered & fed Murphy, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ, a Frittata, and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from fresh, whole beans) with my Chemex® Drip System, scanned the weather and news sites and decided to wait a while before leaving, as it was still dark outside. The week's weather didn't look promising to get all the long-delayed tree installations done as I'd meticulously rescheduled, but we'll get through it, somehow, rain or shine.
I shaved, grabbed a shower, some fresh clothes and left at 6:15am, stopped at Sheetz® for more coffee – I'd just bought a carton of Marlboro®s on Sunday, so I was good for the week – and headed down to the Complex, still thinking about "the offer" I'd had on Sunday from a local, long-time friend and lawnmower/landscaper businessman, in the Stewartstown area. It would be a "crowning jewel" for his business-upgrade, instead of operating out of a dilapidated, old simple pole building on his residential property. I have seen things, few people would believe – a young mother cat suckling her newborn kittens, violent tornadoes & hurricanes up-close and personal, whole hummingbird families in their tiny nests, Spring grass blades poking through a fresh "onion snow", active volcanoes on Hawaii, a Space Shuttle launch which exploded on take-off – all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain, when I die. Valued in 2003 at $7.5 MILLION, his $1.5 MILLION offer for the 20-acre Complex was paltry, but would probably be better than nothing, at least in this worsening economic RECESSION. I'll have to think about it, since the stinking, corrupt and criminal US Gov't would be taking almost 50% (Capital Gains Tax) of that, anyway, for something they had nothing to do with and had already taxed-me-nearly-to-death-on. I'd almost rather let the entire place sit and rot into oblivion than give those corrupt, criminal sons-and-daughters-of-bitches, a dime of anything.

Damn, at 53°F it was very chilly and I wore my Corduroy Barn Coat to ward-off the cold. It should be around 73°F, this time of year, but it looks like an early Winter is coming. I'm ready for it, since I'll be closed-down and won't have Winter Hours to deal with. With all utilities shut-off, and the Irrigation Systems drained-down, whatever's left in the GHs can rot and decompose, if I don't sell the place or donate it to 501c Organizations, for all I care. I won't be going in and meeting Arthur to plow and open-up the place, as we've done for the past 21+ years, during the Winter months. How depressing.
I was up at 4:15am on Tuesday, watered & fed Murphy, had some Fresh-Squeezed OJ, fresh Pink Grapefruit Sections, Grits w/ Butter & Sea Salt, Buttered Toast for breakfast and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from fresh, whole beans,) with my Chemex® Drip System, scanned the weather maps and it looked like another "possible washout day", with a long line of storms moving from southwest to northeast, through our area. Dammit. We loaded-up yesterday afternoon and were hoping to get this large job, requiring 2½-ton machinery, leftover from the May/June/July/August "Unending Drought From Hell", done today. Crap.
After meeting with Alan at 7:45am, he and Arthur decided to do the 2 large Purple Leaf Beech (Fagus sylvatica ‘Riversii') installations using the 1990 John Deere 675B Skid-Loader with Backhoe Attachment, afterall, despite the steady rain. The rest of the week looks like major t-storms and much-heavier rain, but at least these 2 trees, purchased back in mid-May, will be in for the Customer on her 64-acre estate, and her Methodist Church, with the other as a Memorial Tree to Sarah Snyder. I'll have to deal with rescheduling the rest of the week's jobs, either later today or tomorrow morning. Double-crap.
I gave Alan & Arthur another 3 tree installation jobs, left-over from June/July's drought, for Wednesday, since the rest of the week's to be rainy and full of t-storms. That'll help us catch-up somewhat on the severe backlog from the "Unending June/July/August/September Drought From Hell", and allow us to get to a 3-day lscp job for Scott & Lynn, next Tues-Thur, plus some replacements, and the newer jobs which have come into the shop. Several other long-time Customers stopped-by, in tears, to give me hugs, shake hands and say goodbye. I had to go for a "sniffly walk" alone, after each one of those personal sessions, with a wad of Kleenex®. Two more nice ($10k+) lscp jobs came into the shop by phone, along with a lscp maintenance job ($3-4k) on Tuesday, but I'm still planning to close the doors on Friday, October 28th, for good. Dad left at 1pm, Rich had a lscp Customer in for 2½ hrs, and Steffi & I closed-down at 3pm. I was glad to get out of there. My Jeep's windshield was "all blurry" on the drive home, dammit, just thinking about all the good Friends I've made and wonderful Customers I've had, over these past 21+ years.

The mere fact that they aroused serious anger, hate and rage in me was bad enough; taming those negative emotions by writing about them in my "Journal" and sleeping-soundly, is my only escape from their very negative influence over my daily life. important ones, listening to "The Savage Nation" for 3 hours on the Net (6-9pm EST), on local WSBA 910-AM, I called it a day around 9:15pm. Everything was laid-out for breakfast, as usual. My condo cat, Murphy, was already waiting for me, upstairs.

I'm definitely going to try "something different" tomorrow, instead of waiting for the weekend's "big breakfasts", since it's going to be workday washouts for both Thursday & Friday. I scanned the weather and news sites, and everything looked okay for Wednesday morning and early afternoon catch-up tree installations, until the t-storms arrived later, for the next 3-5 days. I ccontinued calling not-for-profit organizations in York County – churches, synagogues, community centers, schools, hospitals, universities, civic clubs, garden clubs etc – to donate my nursery stock, trees and perennials to in the hopes that they could use them to beautify their properties, and definitely provide me with a 100% retail cost/price tax deduction, to offset some of my losses, when I close the doors on Friday, October 28th. It was gut-wrenching to have to do it, but I won't auction it off for pennies-on-the-dollar or let it sit and rot over the Winter months. I'd rather leave it as "my legacy" to York County, along with the 600 American Elm (Ulmus Americana) seedlings I've donated to Customers and parks etc, over the past 8-9 years. I also did some invoicing/billing for several pruning jobs we did today. Alan and I will be driving 45 minutes to Dover on Thursday to look at a $30k LSCP job, part of which we may get done before I shutter-the-doors for good. I closed-down at 2:45pm and ran some errands.
Getting home around 5:30pm, while I re-packed and re-furbished my BOB (Bug-Out-Bag) from the Jeep, I listened to "The Mark Levin Show" for 3 hours on the Net (6-9pm EST), on WABC NYC, went through a boatload of email, and called it another day around 9:30pm. Everything was laid-out for breakfast, as usual. And Murphy was already waiting for me to come up to sleep.

I'd finally gotten us "mostly caught-up" on older tree installations, and we could take today and Friday off, if need be, due to rain and not get any farther nehind. We are actually ahead on a couple of jobs, so I was feeling pretty self-satisfied that I'd pushed the landscape crew into a frenetic install schedule over the past 2-3 days, despite the light showers. With days more rain on the way, it opened-up next week for the medium-sized, 3-day landscape job at Scott & Lynn's. Unless we get rained-out.
I left at 5:45am, stopped at Sheetz® for coffee and smokes, and noticed that gas at-the-pumps had dropped 15¢, over the past 6-7 days, in the York (PA) area: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is down to $3.39/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $3.49/gal, Premium (92 oct) is now at $3.69/gal and Diesel just dropped to $3.89/gal. It still takes $72.50+ of Unleaded Regular, to fill-up my 22-gal gas tank in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee "Laredo", and that's no thanks to that lowlife, commie asshole in The White Crib, killing-off almost all oil and gas exploration/drilling in the US. Bastard!
After opening-up the Complex at 6:15am in the dark, I went through 511 emails, answered a few important ones, tagged the rest as "junk", and returned a number of peoples' cellphonbe calls, leaving messages. I also had 15 messages on the answering machine, which I wrote on my tablet, for answering after 8am. It must have been around the 99% humidity mark, so I turned-on the AC in my Office, to dry it out and make it more comfortable to work, and turned-on the 2 overhead paddle fabs in the Main Retail Bldg to move some air around. After Steffi & Dad arrived, Alan and I headed 1¼hrs north and west to Dover, to look at 2 early-1800s estates, which needed a *lot of work*, but both were long-term projects (4-5yrs), and I'd not be around to do the work or reap any benefits, so I turned them over to Alan, when he leaves my employ on October 28th, or thereabouts, and to whichever garden center/nursery he goes to, to do the work. We stopped on the way back and picked-up some huge, fresh subs to bring back for lunch. By the time we'd gotten back to the Complex around 1:15pm, I had a boatload of calls from 501c/503c non-profit orgs, wanting to know about my "donations" and what the procedure was to get some nursery stock, trees and perennials. I made 4 appointments for Friday morning, but also had 2 other np-orgs waiting to see me, to begin making-up their "wish lists".
Being out on the road all Thursday morning since 8:30am, and not getting back until after 1pm, and then getting bombarded by np-orgs calling and waiting-to-meet, completely drained me. I was glad to get home, get Murphy's needs taken care of, turn-on the AC to 77°F, shave, grab a shower and some fresh clothes, and relax. Scott emailed me about his and Lynn's Landscape Job next week, and not having even had a chance to look at the schedule for 2 days, I emailed back that I thought it was scheduled for Tue 27th - Thu 29th, not starting Mon 26th, but I could be wrong. I won't know until I get in at 6:15am and re-check it. Good thing I don't work for CENTCOM and schedule SpecOps Missions, huh Scott? I'll get that straightened-out on Friday; it's possible it was moved due to TS Lee's 18+" of rain, but I thought the days were correct; perhaps I gave them the wrong numerical dates. Dunno, until tomorrow morning.

A friend and long-time customer from Maryland, Paul, came to visit on Sunday, since he'd read about my closing in my weekly "John's Journal" and we talked for a good 15-20mins about It's not a sin to get "knocked-down"; it's a sin not to "get back-up" and try again. it and my "future plans" for "John Shelley v4.0", whatever it might be; at this point I have no idea. We'd done some extensive landscaping and irrigation for him and his lovely wife, years ago, but because they live in a wooded area, he has a "squirrel and chipmunk problem", chewing holes/leaks in the irrigation piping, so he's up at least once a year to buy splicers and other parts. As he was leaving, he wished me good luck, we shook hands and he hugged me goodbye. It nearly brought me to tears. Thanks so much for coming to see me, Paul, and being a friend, when I needed you.
Over the past 21+ years, I've come to feel that 95% of my "customers" are truly more *friends* than just Landscape Customers in my Office computer's 15,000+ files, or in my hard-copy files in cabinets, both active and archived. I especially cherish meeting, knowing and working for them all. Paul is one of the really good people; there Memories, especially the good ones, are what count. For when we are ultimately gone from our all-too short stay on earth, that's all we'll have in the endless void of time: our memories of others, and the memories others have of us. are so many that I can't even begin to count the many, many thousands, over the years. If I close my eyes, I can see each one's face and their home, before and after the beautiful work we did for them and their families. Memories, especially the good ones, are what count. That all remains to be worked-out with attorneys, the NHT Zoning Commission and Twp Supervisors, though I don't-out much hope for anything positive. I was told outright that "they're NOT amenable to any more homes being built in this area; they want 'open space and farmland' for the Township". Time and money will tell.
