I was up at "0-Dark-Thirty" (4:15am) on Friday, thanks to Murphy, since I'd forgotten to set the alarm last night. I'd had a couple of weird dreams and was up 2x during the night at 11:30pm and 2:30am, having a smoke, sitting on the side of the bed, doing some "thinking about things" and then going back to sleep. I could have slept most of the day. Anyway, I felt more groggy than usual, watered and fed him, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ, Quaker Oats® Apples with Cinnamon for breakfast and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind coffee, scanned the weather and news sites and turned-on the heat. At only 63°F outside, it was now slightly-chilly in the condo. Both WGAL & AccuWeather were showing today's, this weekend's and next week's forecasts to be rainy and colder, thereby possibly/definitely screwing-up my re-re-re-scheduled landscape schedule. Crap; like I needed that.
All Summer long, it was so hot and dry, and no one wanted to do any high-end landscape projects or any major retail plantings, even with my mandatory Drip Irrigation Systems installed; now, it's too rainy and wet (18"+ rain from TS Lee, plus continued rainy days and nights), and now everyone wants everything "done yesterday". That's just not working-out for any of us "mere mortals", as we're not in-charge of anything, especially the weather. That's Mother Nature's Department, not mine.
With everyone except Steffi in, of course it rained almost all-day Friday, with the Complex getting 1¾" by the time we finally left. It was a surprisingly-busy retail day, due mainly to the 35% Off Fall Sale, and the widely-spreading news that I was going-out-of-business, at the end of October. I had reps from schools, churches, synagogues, parks, hospitals, townships, boroughs, towns and PSU both come in and call to talk about my "donations of nursery stock, trees & perennials" to them, and what forms and protocol were required to get what they wanted or needed. I received several dozen emails from Friends, former Employees and Customers about my closing; all expressing sadness and regret at the news. I wrote lengthy and fairly-detailed explanations back to each, as to why I made the painful decision. I'll miss them all very much. I didn't go to my usual 8pm Church Meeting, as I was late getting home, wet and muddy from the day. I needed a shower, dry, fresh clothes and a good night's good sleep to get through the rest of the weekend. After taking care of Murphy's water and food needs, I made fresh, warm Pork Paté in a Beurre Blanc & Scallion Sauce, w/Sautéed Wild Mushrooms & Mashed Potatoes, listened to "The Mark Levin Show" for an hour-and-a-half on the Net (his show is 6-9pm EST), took an Rx 12.5mg Ambien® CR™, and "clocked-out" around 7:30pm.
In case you're wondering, here are the records which were set yesterday (Thursday 9/23/11), according to the NWS (Nat'l Weather Service): we totaled 1.76" of rain yesterday, surpassing the old daily rainfall record of 1.05" set back in 2003. The record for monthly September rainfall was 14.97". So far this month, we've had 16.51" of rain, which now makes this the rainiest September ever. In fact, we're 13.44" above average for rain in September, and 29.89" above average for total precipitation this year. It is now the rainiest year on record at 59.90". This surpasses the old record of 59.28", set in 1972 – the year of Hurricane Agnes. No wonder I can't get any heavy-duty work completed and have to re-schedule jobs all the time.
I was up at 4:15am with the alarm, felt like crap from a restless night (the pill didn't help, after all), watered & fed Murphy, scanned the weather and news sites, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ, and Scrambled Eggs, Sausage & Toast for breakfast with French-Roast, Turkish-Grind coffee – this "same routine" is finally getting to me every morning now for 21 years, and making me nuts – and I just wanted to "call-off the day" and go back to a warm bed and endless sleep. Some people thrive on "routines" as it brings order to their lives; I don't after so many years of it. If I could just I have seen things, few people would believe – a young mother cat suckling her 5 newborn kittens, violent tornadoes & hurricanes up-close and personal, whole hummingbird families in their tiny nests, Spring grass blades poking through a fresh "onion snow", active volcanoes on Hawaii, a Space Shuttle launch which exploded on take-off – all those moments will be lost in time, like my tears in the rain, when I die. pull the covers over my head and "Make The World Go Away" for a while, I'd finally be happy. But that's not reality, and I know it. Once again, I left in the dark and headed to work for the "umpteenth-thousandth time". I can't count that high.
I stopped at Sheetz® to get coffee and smokes, chatted with the staff and other customers about their garden/tree/shrub/perennial problems, paid-up and left, opened-up the Complex at 7am, picked-off 7 calls from the Office answering machine, and then just sat on the wet front steps by Pickle's grave, wishing he were still here with me, looking around at the beautiful Display Gardens and "thinking
Dad, Steffi & Jon were in by 8am on Saturday, and we began pulling "nursery stock donations" for several np-orgs who'd given us "wish lists" on Thursday and Friday, and sat it all out in color-coded, name-tagged, roped-off blocks in the landscape "staging areas", for them to come and pick-up this week and next weekend. I need to rid myself of this existing inventory so I don't have to pay a (corrupt gov't) year-end "usury wholesale tax" on it, since I pay no state sales tax upfront when I purchase it from the various growers. It's also a (corrupt gov't) federal income tax deduction. It got very busy, very quickly, with many retail sales, a new small landscape job, 2 pruning jobs, 2 Fall maintenance jobs and numerous hardgoods sales. I was surprised, since it was supposed to be a cold, rainy day, but that didn't deter Customers from stopping-in to take advantage of the Fall Sale. It turned-out to be a warm, sunny but humid day and we did a very nice Saturday retail business, as a result. I closed-down at 3pm, made a few long-neglected stops on the way home – I'm divorced; I can do that if I want to – and had numerous "condo chores" to do, which I'd been putting-off for several days. Those needed to be done, and I needed to unwind from the day.
After watering & feeding Murphy, I did several loads of laundry, plus my business' GH-1 sink hand towels and Office bathroom/toilet bowl floormats; I'd already done a tub full of coffee mugs, plates and silverware the night before – "boss stuff"; in addition to emptying 3 wastecans daily, scrubbing a toilet and sink – and after 22 years, my condo's GE Dishwasher was beginning to make "not-so-nice, grinding noises". I'll have to "baby-it-along" for a while, or else I'll be hand-washing all that stuff, and have a case of "dishpan hands" over top of all my callouses; oh, the ignominy of it all! Heh.
I watched 4 more of Season One's Episodes (DVD-Disc 3 of 6 in the Set) of "Blue Bloods" DVD on Thursday evening – that's 12 of 24 Episodes so far – and it gets better each time, same way it does with the "Jesse Stone" Series on DVD, both of which were once on CBS-TV. They both are Tom Selleck's best work, IMO. Damn; I wished I'd seen them on CBS-TV when they originally-aired, but now I have the entire DVD Set of each, *without those frigging, annoying commercials*. Ooooooh-rah!
I decided to call it a day around 8:30pm, since I had to get-up early to take care of Murphy, get some food shopping done, retrieve the week's mail from the CHCA condo's community mailbox, visit Mom & Dad, and get to work by 10:30, to open-up by 11am. By all indications from Saturday's business, Sunday would also be a busy retail day. Dad and Steffi would be there, but since Jon wouldn't, I'd have to do the heavy loading, and my back was hurting tonight. I ate a handful of Bayer Aspirin (325mg), which works well for my pain relief. At least I could get some sleep.
Jeeeez, I was up 4x (I count the cigarette butts in the ashtray on my dresser) during the night with lower back and leg pain; it appears that my Sciatica has returned. (Ever since carrying the 125-lbs of oranges into the kitchen 'fridge, 2 50-lb bags of cat litter to the basement, and those 13 heavy cases of bottled water to my basement "SHTF Stash" a few days ago, it's been slowly coming-on, and it hit me Saturday evening like a freight train.) I couldn't find a "good sleeping position", had a lousy night and the pain didn't go away even when I got-up for good at 5am and started moving around. I've been pain-free for 9+ months, since I lost 85-lbs (247 to 162), but have purposely put another 23-lbs back on, so I wasn't so weak and anemic from all that sudden weight loss. Time to drop another 15-lbs and see if that helps any in ameliorating the pain. If it does; great. If it doesn't, I'm NOT going back to epidurals and those addicting, opiate-based Oxycontin® drugs. I'll use cold-paks and aspirin, instead. Damn.
I watered & fed Murphy, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ, Eggs Benedict, Country Sausage, and Oven-Roasted Russet Potatoes (with skin-on) cut in 1" pieces, slathered w/ Butter & Kosher Sea Salt for breakfast and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee, finished my food shopping list and decided not to go back to sleep, after all. I left for Weis Market in East York at 7:15am to get the food shopping done, and some walking exercise to "loosen-up" my back and leg muscles, and try to lessen the piercing-pain (Sciatic Nerve) in my right buttock/thigh/knee/calf/ankle.
After unpacking everything back at the condo, constantly stocking-up my basement "survival necessities", I called Mom & Dad to talk for a while, and then left for the Complex. I opened-up at 10:30am, Dad and Steffi arrived soon afterward and so did a lot of customers, making numerous retail nursery stock, perennial & statuary purchases, plus large B&B trees and wanting them installed. The remaining October Schedule is almost filled-up, and with the final week set aside to *move the remaining nursery stock into the 7-GHs for Winter storage, we're almost finished for good, now. Whatever's not been picked-up by np-orgs this Fall, will most likely be dead by Spring, as no one will be attending to it over the Winter months, except for the B&B trees in the fields. They'll survive. The rest is burnt-toast.

On Sunday at 6:30pm, I listened to a Friday, September 23rd Replay of "The Mark Levin Show" on WABC 770-AM NYC (6-9pm EST), many of which are available anytime, here, or his weekday show at the "Listen Live" Link. I vascillate between Mark Levin and "The Savage Nation" for 3 hours on the Net (6-9pm EST), on local WSBA 910-AM. Both are fascinating radio hosts and prolific authors, with Levin having a "distinct educational and Constitutional edge", IMO. I fed and watered Murphy one more time, took an RX 100mg Gabapentin®, for my Sciatic pain, which did the trick and made me feel great. I was asleep with Murphy by 7:45pm. I knew that 4:15am would come all too early.
The alarm went-off promptly at 4:15am, and as "groggy" as I was from the previous night's Rx 100mg Gabapentin® nerve pain relief capsule, I managed to get Murphy watered & fed, made Poached Eggs with Grits & Butter for breakfast and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee for myself, and get going to work by 6am. It was drizzling when I stopped at Sheetz® for more coffee and smokes, and dense fog and more drizzle all the way into the Complex. Just as I was opening-up, 3 "pick-up truck landscapers" came in and needed 6 tons of screened topsoil loaded, in the dark. I obliged, and with lights-on the 2008 John Deere 317 Skid-Loader, loaded their trucks and trailer. Alan arrived as I was finishing and I'd just dumped some sifted, wet topsoil all-over myself from the bucket accidentally flipping backwards, on the 5th ton load. What a mess.
We had 2 large Tri-Color Beeches (Fagus sylvatica 'Roseo-Marginata') to install down in Maryland today, postponed from May, due to the Summer's "Unending Drought From Hell", and dozens more large B&B trees needing digging and planting for Customers, just from this past weekend's business. Everyone wants trees now, and I may have to stay open a week or two in November, past my "scheduled closing" on Monday, October 31st, just to get it all done. Dammit; I want to get this "out-of-business" crap over with.
I was deluged all-day long with calls and visits from people stopping-by, from np-orgs, to "get their share" of my free nursery stock/perennials/trees. At one point, I became a little more than just Lord, Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the Courage to change the things I can; and the Wisdom to know the difference. pissed-off, when one guy *demanded* that I fill-out all his forms, and do all his request paperwork, which must be done a certain way for my IRS deductions, and pre-typed with *certain, exact categories and headings* – listing the product, SKU#, unit price, quantity, extended price and total donation at the bottom of the np-org's letterhead – and that "I should fill-up his trucks right now". I told him to *either do it my way* for the IRS/ business write-off, or get the f•ck off of my property. He meekly left when he saw my Kimber 1911 "Eclipse Target II" .45cal ACP, which I frequently "open-carry" at my Complex, since it's *private property with a public accommodation*. And because I can. Every other np-org has been most courteous and very cooperative; he's the only schmuck/putz/scumbag I've run into, so far. The additional volume of paperwork and labor, for all of us, which this "donation action" I've initiated, is making me cringe. I was glad to leave by 3:15pm, get home, sweep-out the garage, clean-out/freshly-refill Murphy's cat litter boxes, grab a shower and fresh clothes, do a load of laundry and listen to "The Mark Levin Show" for 2 of his 3 hours on the Net (6-9pm EST), via WABC 770-AM (NY). Tomorrow is Tuesday, and my cleaning lady and her husband come in for the day, and clean the place "within an inch of its life". I called it a day at 8:15pm; Murphy was already asleep on my bed.

I just wanted to go back to bed, and pull the covers over my head, for the rest of the day. Rain, which we'd gotten over the weekend, was headed back toward us from the Midwest and would make a mess of my best-laid plans, once again. Plus, I had to deal with more of the np-orgs "getting their fair share" of my donations. Crap. If the cleaning people weren't going to be here today, I might have jettisoned the day alltogether, and done just that: "quit all the bullshit". At 5am, I just don't give a damn anymore, but that changes as the day goes on. Quitting-for-the-day just wasn't an option, right now. It will be in 5-6 weeks, after I and my business are gone. "F•ck it" will be an option which I'll take advantage of.
The emails just kept pouring-in at 5:30am: 430+ and all of them I'd previously tagged as "junk" went into that folder; the rest I answered or at least scanned and kept in the "inbox" for later replies, this evening. ThunderBird wanted to install a new v6.0.2, so I let it, and that was a mistake; it's crap, and just like the gimmick-laden, "unresponsive v6.X" I have at the Office. I'm going to try to uninstall both, and re-install the older, more responsive/ non-sluggish v5.9 versions. Mozilla has turned into crap, lately with both Firefox, which I hate and don't use, and now Thunderbird has turned into crap. I use the small, fast and reliable Opera Browser, and it's head-and-shoulders above the rest of them all, IMO. IE vX.0 is still total dogshit, as usual.

We'd loaded-up yesterday afternoon for Scott & Lynn's Landscape Job, but even taking the smaller, lighter 1990 John Deere 675B Skid-Loader on its trailer, plus several tons of topsoil, it looked like we were going to get rained-out even before we got there. Damn; I just can't seem to "catch a break" with this frigging weather! Dozens of jobs will now have to be re-re-re-re-re-re-re-scheduled. (((sigh))).
I immediately began making numerous calls and sending a few emails to Customers who were on next week's and the following week's work schedules, to notify them that "Mother Nature had changed everything, once again". Luckily, the weather turned-around, I got ahold of Scott at work and explained "some unanticipated, serious problems" which our former Landscape Architect had overlooked and which Alan had found with Phases 2 & 3, but we agreed to keep the job moving to completion. I'll take care of him and Lynn, and do right by them, as they're truly wonderful people, Friends and Customers. He's also truly one of the "War Heroes – like my Dad (click on "Court of Valor" Slideshow) – who walk amongst us", and there's no way I'll let any of America's Heroes down; not ever. It got very busy around 1pm and continued until almost 3:30, when I had to close-down and get everyone and their paperwork finished-up, and out of the Complex. I'd had a "bellyfull" for the day, wanted to call it quits and go home to relax. ***FLOOD WARNINGS*** were all over the radio, as huge t-storms just to our west were dumping 2-4" of rain on the area. My condo's Professional-Grade Weather Station registered 1½" by 7:30pm.
After stopping for a few overdue errands, I watered & fed Murphy, listened to "The Mark Levin Show" for 2 of his 3 hours on the Net These days, in giving everything I own at my 21+ year-old business away, even to the np-orgs, I feel like an alive, wounded, downed bull, lying in a pasture, being picked apart piece-by-piece, to-death by vultures and buzzards. I wish it were over already; that I was finally dead and didn't feel all this pain at what was happening to me. (6-9pm EST), via WABC 770-AM (NY) and hit-the-sack around 8:15pm. It was still pouring hard, I was just glad to finally get some sleep.
After a lousy Tuesday night's sleep and getting-up 3x – 10:30pm, 1:15am and 3:20am – sitting on the edge of the bed, having a smoke, thinking about all the now-rain-delayed work we had to get done, closing-down the business, getting Customers' jobs and replacements done or accounts settled, ridding myself of inventory with all these voracious np-orgs, I finally got-up with the 4:15am alarm, watered & fed Murphy, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ and Quaker Oats® Peaches & Cream Oatmeal for breakfast, and coffee, and scanned the weather and news websites, for the day and week ahead. It was ugly: t-storms and showers all the rest of the week, a clear weekend, and more rain next week, and we had so much digging to do in the fields for large tree installations, but it just wasn't going to dry-out enough to get it all done. I'd probably have to wind-up refunding several, if not many, of those large tree purchases, due to the wet weather and our inability to dig and install them. My carefully-crafted schedule was now blown-to-hell, already, and it would just get worse as Fall advanced upon us. I was in a depressed mood, when I left for work at 6am.
After stopping for coffee, I opened-up the Complex at 6:30am, re-checked the weather sites, and a massive t-storm was just passing DC and headed north, right at us. My LSCP Crew was loading-up mulch for the job in Stewartstown, trying to get it done before the deluge hit and ruined another day. We're now heading for the *wettest September ever, in recorded history*; another new record, which has pretty much ruined my and my few remaining Customers' Landscape Plans, plus dozens of large tree installations. I think I'm beyond "mere depressed"; I'm becoming increasingly *morose* with all this damned rain! WTF was it all Summer, when we really needed it? Dad and Kim were in on Wednesday, and several np-orgs said they'd be by to pick-up the block(s) of nursery stock/perennials we'd reserved for them, on their formal 501(3)(c) letterhead/list request. With all the forecast coming rain, I expected it to be a short day, once again. But it wasn't, although my Landscape Crew were rained-out on their job. We'll keep going back until we get Phases 2 & 3 completed.
It was a busy day at the Complex, with numerous np-orgs coming in for "their share", scores of phone calls from others inquiring about how "they could get some freebies", a few retail sales and I finally closed-down at 3:30pm and went home. I dropped Dad off at nearby Endurance Automotive, where his 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 'Laredo' was getting its yearly inspection. Once again, I was just glad to get out of there and head home.
Murphy was anxiously-waiting for his afternoon watering and feeding, and I quickly-obliged. After a few dozen "condo chores", I worked on the "revised Corporate Website Warranty Page (active)" and my "final Corporate Website Home Page (draft #1, not active yet)", after it's safely-archived and finally-removed on 10/31/11. I listened to "The Mark Levin Show" for his 3 hours on the Net (6-9pm EST), via WABC 770-AM (NY) and hit-the-sack with Murphy, around 9:15pm.
I was up at 4am, watered & fed Murphy, made breakfast and coffee, and scanned the weather and news sites, and left for work at 6am. More rain and cooler temps aree coming as October ends and November begins. We had 1½" of rain on Wednesday night as t-storms moved through, and I slepy through it all. My condo's rain gauge told the story at 6am. Looks like we're really screwed with the large tree installations, now. "Seasonable temps in the 50s" don't dry anything out, especially the super-saturated ground. We'll be lucky to get a couple remaining landscape jobs done on-time and within budget, now. I'm going to probably have to cancel some/all of the many large tree installations and refund everyones' pre-paid monies, as we move into November and even cooler/colder weather. "Normally", we could wait-this-period-out, do it later in the month or even in the Spring, but these are not "normal times", right now.
On a "brighter note" – if there indeed is such a thing for me, these days – I noticed on my trip into work that gas price-at-the-pumps have dropped another 14-20¢, over the past 6-7 days, in the York (PA) area: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now down to $3.25/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $3.35/gal, Premium (92 oct) is now at $3.55/gal and Diesel just dropped to $3.75/gal. BFD, but better than nothing, I guess.
Dad and Kim were off on Thursday, Steffi was in, and Alan and I met at 7:30am to go over the rest of the week's rain-truncated schedule, as well as prepare to do some "serious large tree digging" next week, as it's supposed to clear-off, be sunny and relatively warm and dry. Perhaps we can some some or all of the large B&B trees out of the ground for the pre-paid Customers. We'll have to see what happens over the weekend with the rains. "Mother Nature's In Charge..." and all that crap. We were innundated by np-orgs all day long; both in-person making "their lists" and by phone calls of new ones inquiring about getting some of my "donations". I still had some tough decisions to make about all the leftover hardgoods – tools, chemicals, fertilizers, statuary, pottery, drip irrigation, Garden Art pieces etc – and would figure that out in a day or two, as to how to dispose of them, or leave them stay-put, until next Spring. Too much all at once, but I need the write-offs this year and will have to consult with my Sub-S Corp Board, as to when and what to do with all that stuff. Plant material comes first, since it'll all be dead by Spring – except for the B&B trees – if I don't rid the inventory of it right away. The large B&B field trees will easily survive until Spring, as will the hardgoods.

The Landscape Crew still hadn't returned from their work, but they could get into the Complex through "the secret back entrance", so I bypassed their buildings and locked/armed the Main Retail Bldg & connected Retail VWGH. The 7-days-a-week schedule is starting to get to me, now.
I FTP'd my newly-revised, usual Thursday night Corporate Website Pages and Friday's "Journal" entry to my server, listened to "The Mark Levin Show" for 2 of his 3 hours on the Net (6-9pm EST), via WABC 770-AM (NY) and called it a day, with Murphy, around 8pm. Sleep was what I needed. Tomorrow's another day. (Here, at Post #7, are another list of stations which carry his great show.)
What I really needed was to go to "The Cabin" for a while and get myself back together, mentally and physically. Perhaps I shall, soon.

She'd worked for me for 7+ years, met her husband at my business, who'd also worked for me for 5+ years, before he and she left for better career opportunities in Maryland. I've missed both of them, very much since, and wished that I could have made "counter-offers" to keep them, but financially I couldn't match what they'd both been offered and had ahead in their young lives, for their budding (no pun intended) horticultural careers. She and Dave are now the 2nd and 3rd Employees I've lost to "The Peoples' Republik of Maryland" (corrupt lib-dem-run gov't): it seems that I train them, and they "go somewhere else" for their careers. I hope both Dave & Jennifer stop by for a "final visit" with me, before I close-down.
Also, my local township's Chief of Police, whom I've known and respected for 21+ years, emailed me about an "ugly rumor" he'd heard about my closing-down. I'd built a beautiful water garden and surrounding gardens for him and his wife, 10-12 years ago, and it was still going strong. I also responded to him with a very detailed reply as to why I made the painful decision. I see him and his Deputy, numerous times each week in the area, so we'll have a chance to talk before the 28th of October.
