i hate coming back to a partially finished project — regardless of the cause of the initial interruption — because trying to find the common thread of where I left off is often more tedious than starting over. If there's one thing I've learned in 10 years of owning and operating this 20acre garden center & nursery, it's that constant interruptions are SOP (standard operating procedure). The other thing I've learned is that I can't change SOP. So I either get in very early before the phones start ringing and people walk into my office, or I stay late after the hubris has abated. I prefer early. The drought does have a positive side: it's slowed the calls and walk-ins down so that I can get things done without many interruptions at all. The "25% Off Fall Nursery Stock Sale", which started Wednesday, negated that and the place is busy once more. Around The Garden Center. Sure, I gripe-whine-moan-bitch-complain about the drought and diminishing groundwater levels throughout the region, but last Thursday evening we finally got some of our due: 2.5" of rain from a very powerful thunderstorm. It knocked out power and phones and laid surprisingly little of the nursery stock in containers, over flat. My multi-million-gallon-plus retention ponds filled up quickly and overflowed, all kinds of debris flowed down the driveways. I had already left for the day, but the telltale signs of water were evident the next morning. Friday was a clean-up day. Friday was also set-up day for the 48th Annual Shrewsbury Flower Show, which we've been involved with for the past nine years. It runs Saturday and Sunday. Technically, it's one of the finest shows I've ever seen. Imagine that: way out here in south central Pennsyl-tucky, something as marvelous as that. Our display greets all visitors to the show, isn't entered in the category judging, but always wins Best of Show ribbons; a "gratis" thing from the Show Committee for our community service efforts.
