A Day In The Life
I slept-in until 7:30am on Friday, after a night of "Blade Runner" weird dreams, but felt good nonetheless. It was a cloudy, drizzly, 47°F morning and the next few days were forecast to be warm and rainy. Fine by me; beats cold and snow, anytime. I cranked-up the Condo's heat to 76°F, made some Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, and several mugs of steaming hot, French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee, and fired-up the computer to check the weather and news. After downloading email from last night and this morning, I had an English Muffin w/ Mimosa Orange Jam, and just relaxed while listening to the local morning news. Saturday: another sleep-in morning until 7:45am, with a slight earache, like I used to get as a kid. My equilibrium is slightly affected (off-balance) until it abates, so I carefully made my way downstairs, started coffee, OJ and had a couple of English Muffins w/ Butter. I'm on an English Muffin kick, right now. By the 2nd mug of coffee, the minor earache was gone, and I felt better. Cloudy, cool and 48°F outside, and it felt like a early-Spring morning; oh wait, it is. The weather sites forecast several days of flooding rain; in fact a ***AREAL FLOOD WATCH*** was posted for the area. The rain arrived around 11am. Because of the earache, I skipped my usual morning shower, but had paperwork to do, some Condo chores to start and decided not to go out in the cold rain, even with the subsided earache. There were a number of Chris Plante Show Podcasts I'd missed this past week, so I went thru them, and also some recent Dennis Miller Podcasts. Up at 7:30am on Sunday, it was a cool (41°F outside), rainy morning and my earache was back. I was awake and up at 6:30am on Monday, grabbed my bathrobe, fired-up the furnace to 76°F, made OJ and coffee, checked the weather sites, read thru the national news and world financial market openings, and saw that the over 2" of snow we'd gotten last night, was slowly melting at 38°F and would be gone in a few hours. Yesterday's hard rain had washed-off the roads, driveways, sidewalks and most hard surfaces of all the road salt, brine, chemicals and dirt from the hard Winter, and everything looked fresh and clean, at least from my front door. I decided to just have a English Muffin w/ Peach-Amaretto Jam for breakfast, and have a much larger brunch, later in the morning. I needed to skip the last of the Chinese food today, and finish it up tomorrow. After a shower, I went out at 9:30 to get some errands done, still amazed to see all of the low-lying roads blocked-off with rain's deluge run-off water from yesterday, and was back home by 11.
After unloading some groceries, shirts from the cleaners and sweeping out the garage, I made a Ham Omlet & Homefries brunch. I turned-off the heat, and opened-up the Condo's windows to air-out the place, while I listened to Rush until 3pm, and did some chores. I stripped/remade the bed, and got another load of laundry ready to go. I listened to the morning's missed Chris Plante Show Podcast for 3hrs. High for the day was 64°F. I gathered-up my 1990 Rolatape MM-30 measuring wheel, old 2002 Kodak® Easy-Share® DX3900 Digital Camera, ancient 1984 Land's End® Canvas Attaché Carrying Briefcase & Sketchpad, and a few other tools-of-the-trade to take to Becky's tomorrow, to meet with her Condo Assn's lscp guy (who worked for me in '95-'96), and get some preliminary measurements/sketches for her gardens' renovations, and pics of its current state.

I met with Ben and Becky, took pics, took measurements, did some rough sketches and stopped to visit Dad on the way home. He's down with the flu, had gone to the Dr's in the morning and gotten cough syrup and meds. No, I don't play the Powerball Lottery, or any lottery, including the "March Madness B-Ball" crap. Once, when I worked in NYC in the 70s, I did play the NYS Lottery and had 5-of-6 numbers in a $12,000,000 lottery, and won $1,455, but have never played since. Statistically, one has a better chance (1-in-175,000,000) of being hit by lightening twice in one day, than winning "the big one". The pounding rain on the Condo's skylights woke me at 7:30am on Wednesday, and although I felt like sleeping-in for the rest of the morning, I got up and started the day. Heat turned-up, I had several cups of Del Monte® Red Grapefruit, made coffee and checked the weather and news sites. 44°F outside. I made Soft-Boiled Eggs w/ Toast in a bowl, got ready and went out to a couple of local nurseries to look around for plants. I found what I was looking for on my first stop, called Becky and made arrangements with her to go there and buy many of the fresh, choice conifers just unloaded from Iseli Nursery, one of my high-end nursery stock suppliers for 20yrs. Back home by 11:45am, I worked on the detailed sketches of her Condo's front/back, so we could place the plants, boulders, river stone etc, first, before they're dug-in permanently. Back home by 4pm, I continued working on the sketches, and plant lists, and started listening to the morning's missed Chris Plante Show on WMAL's Podcast, for about an hour, when at 5:35pm, breaking news of another Ft Hood shooting came over the computer, and I simultaneously followed it on this site's live thread. 4 dead, 8 seriously wounded, shooter dead; a horrible day for our brave US Troops. I stayed-up until 11:15pm watching multiple press conferences, but decided to pick it up in the morning, as the investigation is a long way from over. I closed down, armed the Condo, and went up to bed at 11:30pm.

After cleaning-out the Jeep's cargo bay tarp, a Chicken Salad Sandwich on Croissant w/ Chips and 4 aspirin, I laid down on the LR couch, wrapped myself in my new afghan, listened to the rest of Rush, replayed the morning's missed Chris Plante Show on WMAL's Podcast page, and caught a nice snooze. High for the day was 62°F. The t-storms arrived around 4pm, with the worst storms moving thru north of us in York. The Southwest and Plains were getting slammed with tornadoes, as the season has started. By 6pm, I'd tuned into the evening's Mark Levin Show until 9pm, and then switched over to the John Batchelor Show, from 9-11pm. That was the day for me; time for some sleep.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and I have a few days "off" to get some personal things done, check on Dad's flu progress, help Becky with more landscaping next week, and get in touch with Sherry to see when we can get started on her home's landscaping projects. With Spring weather here, it's time to get the AC unit checked, think about screen door inserts, and I can see more and longer walks each week. I'm just glad Winter's over!
Win-XP O/S Is Gone.
Windows XP is dying and all support for it, will be gone very soon. On April 8th, Microsoft will stop supporting the ancient operating system that was released in 2001 – and at one point was used by 400 million people. After the shaky Win-95 and Win-96, I used XP from 2001 until 2009, when I switched to Win-7 Pro x64, and have loved that OS ever since.

But there's something about Windows XP. It's basic, stable, fast enough, and good enough for a lot of people. It's still running on more than 10 percent of the world's computers, and it's huge in China. Note that MS' support for XP in China WON'T end on April 8th; just for the rest of the world.
Still, it's time. It's hard to keep an operating system this old up to snuff in today's online environment. XP works, but it's not built to the same security level as modern operating systems. Microsoft doesn't want to keep writing new security upgrades for it, so on April 8, it's stopping. No more security updates. No more support. Your XP computer will still work, but Microsoft won't help you anymore. Microsoft is pretty harsh about it: “XP cannot be considered safe to use after support ends.”
There are hundreds of sites telling you the good and bad things about staying with Win-XP, and dozens of others who'll charge you to support your current XP with upgrades from their IT teams, but my advice is to upgrade to Windows-7 x64. Screw Win-8 and Win8.1; they're crap and were meant for touchscreen devices like iPads, iPhones, Androids etc, NOT desktops and laptops. Yes, you can get plenty of desktops and laptops with Win-7 x64.
I've had Win-7 x64 on 2 HP office-industrial-grade (not those fragile home units you buy for $500-600) desktops, and recently replaced the one unit's 500GB HD, for a couple hundred bucks, have the 2nd unit as an identical spare, and have everything auto-backed-up on to 2 WD external 1TB HDs. I'll be using Win-7 forever until they carry me out of my Condo in a body bag.

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate demokkkRATic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs. It is called the Center of Military History. It is located 30 minutes outside Washington, D.C., at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The building itself is very nondescript.
But behind a series of highly alarmed doors and long, cement, camera-laden hallways. It is the highly sophisticated, climate-controlled treasure room where the army keeps its most precious artifacts.
The facility was built for $24 million in 2010. The cavernous warehouse is typically shrouded in total darkness. Motion lights illuminate only the areas in which someone is walking.
If I could get tickets, I'd fork over my first-born child. Oh wait; I don't have one. Heh. I'd go there in a heartbeat.
Some People Just Need Killing

Society's innocents — our precious, defenseless children and the frail, defenseless elderly — must be protected from predators, murderers, rapists, robbers and other subhuman filth, at all times and at any cost, IMO.
The 6th Commandment actually says: "Thou Shalt Not Murder". It does NOT say, "Thou Shalt Not Kill." I personally don't consider any summary-execution — except by subhuman, murderous muslim/islamic pigshit — as murder, in any way, shape or form. It's "Due-Justice-For-Crimes-On-This-Earth", IMO.

I've never agreed with fat, shithead, libtard, douchebag filmmaker Michael Moore, but on this point, I do. GM is guilty of the crime of murder. They chose to ignore the problem for a dumbassed quick "fix", which didn't work, for many years. When a gun mfgr finds a serious problem, even a potential problem, they do a recall and a fix, even if no one has been injured, let alone killed. Why should car mfgrs be any different or exempt?
