I made the mistake of driving over to neighboring Shrewsbury (PA), normally a 10-minute drive, to get a down vest at the Wal-Mart Super Center, last Friday morning. Gawd, the traffic was stunning. Instead of 10-15 cars waiting ahead of me for a green light, there were hundreds, and the traffic congestion was beyond huge. Well duh, genius! It's 2 days before Christmas, and everyone and all their relatives and friends are on the roads, shopping at the last minute. What normally would have been a 30-minute trip, lasted 2½ hours. Ditto on the way home: traffic jams were 1-2 miles long, for places like the York Galleria and other major shopping centers. MEMO to self: don't ever try that again! Wait until after it's all over. LOL!

I went into work on Saturday (Christmas Eve Day) at 9am, and could count the number of cars on one hand; the roads were empty. Though the mall parking lots were about half-full, I'm guessing everyone got there very early to finish-up their last-minute shopping. That most people had the day off — me being one of the exceptions — would also account for the very sparse traffic. This'll be the first Christmas and New Years without Pickle to feed, care for and play with.
On Christmas Eve, I made a small stockpot (3gals) of Killer Chili, and let it simmer for hours. I have up to a 20gal stockpot, but it would take me all Winter to get through that much chili, and I like some diversity in my stews, soups and chili recipes, so I opted for a small batch. This is the same recipe I'd used back in the late-50s and early-60s, in the Boy Scouts, to feed my entire patrol and the rest of the troop. It'll be delicious eating for the next 1-2 weeks. Then, on to something different.
It rained all day, on Christmas. Well, at least it wasn't snow or ice. I went over to Mom & Dad's for Christmas Day Dinner, at 2pm, and we had "untraditional" meat loaf, mashed potatoes, peas, butternut squash bisque, and coconut cake & vanilla ice cream, and some local vino. Yum. We called Sister Becky around 2:15pm, and she was busy preparing a Christmas Day Dinner for some friends, in SF.
