when things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are just not enough to get it all done, remember the old parable about "The Mayonnaise Jar & The 2 Beers".
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full.
They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.
The students responded with a unanimous "yes".
The professor then produced two beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed.
"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things – your family, your children, your health, Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning how to dance in the rain. your friends and your favorite passions – and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else – the small stuff.
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented.
The professor smiled and said, "I'm glad you asked. The beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room and time for a couple of beers with a friend."

A Day In The Life
I must have been awoken 2x-3x during Thursday night/ Friday morning, due to very heavy rain on the skylights and windows, as squalls moved through the area. I got back-up at 3:30am to water & feed Murphy, make a quick breakfast and coffee, and figure out what I needed to get done today, as I'd not be going down to the Complex again until Monday, after Christmas. My 8pm Church Meeting was cancelled tonight and next Friday might due to the Holiday Weekends, and instead go up to Adam's Junction on Christmas Eve, to lay a single Red Rose on Gabrielle's grave, in the town cemetary, to commemmorate her untimely death last year, and my still-unending sorrow.
It was still raining lightly on Friday morning, but tapering-off as I left at 6:15am for the former GC&N, and I'd hoped it would be a short day there, since it was Christmas Weekend. Many businesses in the York area had closed early yesterday, and many people were getting 3 & 4-day weekends. Natch; ditto for next weekend: New Year's. I opened-up at 7:15, after stopping for more coffee, a smoke outside the rental car and a carton of Marlboro®s at Sheetz®, and loaded-up the rental car with some of the leftover front counter computer server equipment, magnetic truck signs (souvenirs from "The Day"), Office file boxes, my Office's HP Deskjet D1660 Printer (to set-up and use with my Kitchen's Computer System), and other odds & ends, to take for storage in my Condo's basement. I'll be bringing the Office's now not-needed HP 6000 Pro Microtower Computer, much larger 24" LCD Samsung Widescreen Monitor (to swap-out with my current, slightly-smaller Samsung 22" LCD Widescreen Monitor, which goes into storage), two Cisco-Linksys Routers, two external 2Tb Western Digital® "My Book" Back-Up HDs, the Logitech MK710 Wireless Keyboard & Mouse, two APC Power Back-Up and Line Conditioner Units, and Logitech® TFX v5.1 Z-906 Surround Sound System, also for storage as spares, here at the Condo. I should move all that hardware up to "The Cabin", but I promised myself when I bought the 43-acre place, that I'd never do that, except for my cellphone and Police Scanner.
If the real estate market "isn't coming back until 2013", as predicted, and I don't get "my price" for the GC&N Complex, I'll hold on to it until it brings what I want. I still "remember how to work for a living" and will get 2 jobs to support myself, if necessary. SSI just isn't an option, right now, although I'm 62 and easily qualify for it, I'll wait until 66 or 70 and get the maximum benefits.
After quitting for the weekend at 12:30pm, I hit unimaginable traffic on the roads as tens-of-thousands of morons/idiots/assholes/shit-for-brains/robototrons were all packed in another "sea of cars" – of course, only 1 to a car – clogging-up Rt 24 north to and Rt 24 south, from The Galleria and York Town Center Malls, doing last-minute "Christmas Shopping". Every year at Christmas and the so-called "Black Friday" after Thanksgiving, without fail, it's a nightmare and horror show to get home or go anywhere else from home, at almost any time of day, in either direction. On Christmas Day, the roads will be almost totally empty. At least we don't have to deal with this gangsta-thug crap, in our malls. Yet. I've Insanity is defined as, "doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results". been through this traffic BS for the past 21 years, and I'm still not used to it. They just keep building more and more malls, adding more and more housing/people/vehicles, schools, strip mall stores, stoplights, schoolbusses, garbage trucks, road repair delays and increasing the traffic flow on these vastly-outdated 1950s roads. Insanity is defined as "doing the same act over and over again, and expecting different results". 2+ frigging hours to go 14.2 miles! So I tooks the "backroads and shortcuts" around it all, and made it in under 50 minutes. Probably 50-60% of those people will *return* a full 80% of what they bought, further clogging-up the roads next week, too. Looks like I won't get to my 8pm Church Meeting tonight, after all. I'm not even venturing-out in that maddening traffic mess. I'll email Frank and let him know that I'm going to be AWOL tonight. I just got an email back from Frank saying that both 8pm Church Meetings – for Christmas and New Year Fridays – were cancelled.
My Cousin, Rev Tom Shelley called, and invited me to his beautiful little Zion Shaffer's Church's Saturday 6:30pm Christmas Eve Service, which is located over in Seven Valleys. I said that I'd be there, if the traffic wasn't too bad getting out of this hellish shopping mall-infested area. That said, I worked on transposing more Chapters for "The Virtual Cabin" from my 2011 weekly "Journal" pages, to the Server's new domain. I still have many, many nights and weeks ahead, to get it all finished and "live". The "devil is in the details". I finally called it a night at 8:45pm, and Murphy was already waiting for me, on the bed.
I was up at 4am on Saturday, checked the USDA Prime Boneless Heart Of Rib Roast in the 'fridge, and it still hasn't thawed-out, now going-on 72hrs; it should have only taken 64hrs (16hrs per 1-1lb; 4-lbs = 64hrs), and it sure won't be thawed by tomorrow. It's only thawed-down ¼", and would be still-frozen in the middle, tomorrow. I should have taken it out last Sunday instead of Wednesday at 4am, and not "followed *the seller's* thawing instructions", as I usually don't; I do it according to "my own intuition", and that's 99.8% right, every time. So I have to go to "Plan B", for Mom & Dad's Christmas Dinner: from scratch, I will make the Chicken Cordon Bleu w/ Fresh Hollandaise Sauce, the same Crockpot® full of Assorted Vegetables (no meat), Crusty Italian bread and Twisted Cactus Sherbet drizzled with Agave Nectar, for dessert. I'll also use Roasted Red and Roasted Yellow Pepper Coulis Sauce, which I made and froze back in February in squeeze bottles, to decorate the plates and as a condiment. Those bottles thawed-out in less than 1hr. When the 4-lb Roast "finally thaws-out", I'll do it w/ Crockpot® Vegetables again, and give 2/3rds to Mom & Dad, and keep 1/3rd of it for my week's lunches/dinners.
Awwww crap! The Acronis Monitor on my Condo's über-fast HP Pavilion HPE h8se series (Win-7 Pro) unit HD says "it's degrading and failing", and only at "26% reliability", on Saturday, Dec 24th, at 2:15pm. It's slowly degrading by the day, now, and "failure is imminent". Why does this stuff always happen on a weekend or holiday? No tech support, no repairs, no replacement HD on Christmas weekend, that's for sure. I might have to run down to my Office and grab my identical unit and bring it back here, if it fails today/tonight/tomorrow, instead of going to Tom's Church's Christmas Eve Service. I'm screwed; it's a new >1½-year old unit, and HP used to be so darned reliable. But this is not a good omen of things to come! Everything is now backed-up to one of my WD® "My Book" 2Tb External Drives, but that won't operate if the C-drive fails. And it's a Seagate TS-500Gb HD; all I have for spares here at the Condo are 100Gb SATA HDs, from an older computer's RAID-2 Array, and the WIN-7 OS will barely fit on that, let alone all the other files necessary just to run it. Everything else is backed-up to the external drive. Crap!
Then suddenly, I remembered the old parable about "The Mayonnaise Jar & The 2 Beers", and it all didn't seem that important. If it happens, it happens; not much I can do about it at this point, except keep it backed-up. I had to go up to Adam's Junction, to lay a single Red Rose on Gabrielle's grave, and then be at Tom's Church, for Christmas Eve Service by 6:30pm. So I left the Condo, stopped at a local florist for the Red Rose, and hit I-83 north to the Village Cemetary. I spent 30-mins with her, laid the Rose, and drove straight to the Historic Church, in Seven Valleys for a very special, beautiful and meaningful Christmas Eve Service. I was home by 9:30pm, watered Murphy twice, and went to sleep. Somehow, I was beginning to not feel well, and just attributed it to a busy day. Christmas Day would be busy with Mom & Dad coming for Christmas Dinner, at 1pm. I had to get up early and get the vegetables started in the Crockpot®; lots of "lead prep-time", as always, when I chef for others.
I slept-in until 5:30am on Christmas Morning, and felt "like crap" when I got up. I had the chills and fever, sneezing-profusely and coughing-up *furballs*, constant headaches, every joint/bone/muscle hurt, and I knew that I was coming down "with something"; probably the flu. I haven't been to any malls, movie theaters, doctor's offices or around the general public since the Auction, last Saturday, so unless I caught it from someone there, and it's "incubated" all this time, I didn't know what to make of it. So I took aspirin, drank plenty of fluids, and soldiered-on to get things ready for Mom & Dad's Christmas Day Dinner. Truly, I felt like shit crap – my butt dragged all morning – as I had to quickly re-wash all of the many square and triangular dishes & plates I hadn't used in a couple of years, as they were dusty – but I got it done and Christmas Dinner ready for their arrival at 1pm. I also did a couple loads of laundry, even though my cleaning people are coming-in tomorrow, it just needed doing. I copied hundreds of folders from C: to F: drives, and deleted hundreds more to make room on the failing drive. By 11:45am, I was starting to feel a little better, but still had not much of an appetite. I started to go out for my usual Sunday pick-up mail at the Comdo Community Mailbox, but found that I'd left those keys in my Jeep and I'd have to retrieve them on Monday.
Christmas Dinner with Mom & Dad and for a change, at my place, was a huge success and so wonderful to have them over for 3-4 hours. They both enjoyed playing with Memories, especially the good ones, are what count. For when we are ultimately gone from our all-too short stay on this earth, that's all we'll have in the endless void of time: our memories of others, and the memories others have of us. Murphy, "when he was in the mood". After they left, I laid-out everything I needed for morning breakfast and wardrobe, as usual, and worked until 9:30pm on CHKDSK-ing the C:/ to try repairing the failing "unallocated sectors problem" on my Kitchen's machine. I was feeling so bad from the flu sumptoms, that I gave-up and went to sleep.
Night sweats, fever, chills, clogged-up head, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, soaked pillow, sore throat, achy joints/muscles – even my hair hurts – prevented me from a good night's sleep, but I made it until 4:15am on Monday, after swapping pillows sometime in the night. I took a handful of aspirin, watered & fed Murphy, made several glasses of Fresh-Squeezed OJ, Quaker Oats® Peaches & Cream Oatmeal, had a Bananna and took 2 along, 3 mugs of French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from fresh, whole beans) with my Chemex® Drip System. I also grabbed two 1-gal jugs of Ocean Spray® Diet Blueberry-Pomegranate Juice to take along to work, for sipping.
This would be my last week at the Complex, full-time; now it would be only the occasional day – "by appointment only" – since I'd be breaking-down my remaining Office Computer equipment and bringing it home, and my InterNet connection there would expire on Saturday, December 31st. I had to (hopefully) get my Jeep back this week to transport all that stuff home, or do it a little each day in the rental car. I'll definitely be going to "The Cabin" this weekend, 1) to get away from the drunk drivers on the roads around York, 2) rest, relax and hopefully, finally get rid of this "bug" I've got, which is making me miserable. I'm sure I'm now very contagious, so I don't want to be around other people and give "it" to them. I almost never get sick; it's a true rarity, but this time I've got "it". I've been invited to several local New Year's Day gatherings, all of which I'm going to turn down, so I don't spread this "whatever-it-is", because it isn't pleasant at all. It's best for all involved, as this is miserable.
I left for work at 6:30am in the dark, and stopped at Fishel Automotive to get my Condo mailbox/house keys from the Jeep, on the way to Sheetz®, but the Jeep was inside the Service Dep't and I couldnt get the keys, got a large coffee, had a smoke outside the rental car, chatted with some people, and got to work about 7:30, to open-up. The roads were almost deserted, since everyone else seems to have the day off too, as they did on Friday, making it a 4-day Christmas Holiday Weekend. And school kids got off 2-3 days before Christmas, and now won't return until after New Year's Day. (Back in the 50s & 60s, we kids got-off at 12noon on Christmas Eve Day, went back to school for the week in-between the two Holidays, again got-off at 12noon on New Year's Eve Day, and went back to school right after the New Year. These union teachers and kids have it way too soft today, IMO. No wonder they don't learn shit diddly-squat, anymore. Well, at least there weren't any of those frigging school busses on the road today, clogging-up traffic.) Fishel had my Jeep inside with the blown engine pulled and was ready to install the new engine, so I'd have to get the keys after work, on the way home. After getting into work, the calls started coming-in from people off-work this week, wanting to pick-up more of their "purchases" from the recent Auction. I accommodated them, but warned them that Friday would be the last day, unless "by special appointment". We've got ice and snow coming soon, and I have no equipment or shovels left with which to clear that stuff.
I passed on lunch – just the thought of food makes me sicker – and drank lots of juice, all-day, with more handfuls of aspirin. I had to call AT&T to split-off Dad's, Alan's and my cellphones from corporate billing to "personal responsibility billing", and was on both my Office landline on one ear and the cellphone with the other ear – so that's why God gave us 2 ears! – talking to multiple department operators, at once, plus calling Dad and Alan to leaves messages and important information for their return calls to AT&T to complete the process steps. Pain-in-the-ass having to deal with 15+ people/dept's on their end; it should have been done by one person within 5-7 minutes, or less.
The guy and wife who bought my beautiful indoor water garden – here and here – stopped by with 2 helpers, and demolished it – here and here – in under 6 hours, leaving big holes in the ground to fill-in and about 3-4 CuYds of cement now needing to be poured to finish-off the area's flooring. It truly broke my heart to see it go and left me very depressed for the rest of the day. Here's what my Main Retail Looked like inside, a few years ago, and When you walk to the edge of all the light that you have and take that first step into the darkness of the unknown, you must believe that one of two things will happen: There will be something solid for you to stand upon, or you will be taught to fly. what it looks like now. I left at 3pm, and found out from the Service Manager at Fishel Automotive, that my Jeep's repair job would probably cost $900+ more than he'd quoted me, since there might be internal damage to the "engine core exchange". Also, it might be another week-plus until I get it back, since Christmas and New Year's are back-to-back, *4-day holidays for his mechanics*; they're only working 3 days a week! So, this entire engine replacement, with the extended car rental ($695.00) added-in, will probably cost me upwards of $7,100 now. Even more depressed, I went home, watered and fed Murphy, took the garbage to the curb for Tuesday morning pick-up, took an Rx 12.5mg Ambien® CR™, and went to sleep at 6:45pm. Either that, or go get a bottle of Scotch or Vodka, and I didn't want to start that again, since January 10th is my One Year Anniversary of quitting all alcohol. I can more easily sleep through the pain and depression of what's happening this week, than drink it and myself into oblivion. Situations are now way beyond my direct or indirect control, and it's best to try to not to get too upset over them, or I'll do something "stupid". I have a long week ahead of me, and possibly next week, as well. Plus, I was feeling really bad from the flu, and I needed the sleep more than anything else.
Wow, Sears is closing up to 100-120 Sears and K-Mart Stores. Borders, Circuit City, Starbucks, Friendly's Ice Cream, me, and countless other Small & Medium Businesses closing-down. A sad commentary on this country's "commie, intentionally-destructive leadership" and pathetic, dying economy.
I was up at 4:15am on Tuesday, watered & fed Murphy, made a quick very quick breakfast and left at 6:15, since there'd be several more people, including a large landscape contractor, coming-in to pick-up either items purchased during the Auction, or plants I'd donated weeks ago to almost a hundred np-orgs in the region. My cleaning people would also be in today, since one of them was sick with the flu yeaterday, and postponed their Monday work. I was still feeling lousy from the flu, too, but ate a handful of aspirin, and just kept going to accommodate them. A huge rainstorm moved-in from the southwest and If you live long enough, you have regrets, and the ones that "nag" at you the most, are the ones where you knew you had a choice. The very same ones where you knew you could have stopped yourself; the very same ones where you looked into a mirror, and everything good inside yourself said, "Don't do this". deluged the poor guys digging trees in the fields for the np-orgs. But hells-bells; they're getting well-paid to deal with it, using good machines, and I'm not. I skipped lunch; having the flu takes away my appetite away. I've been calling Avis RAC for over 3 hours to extend my rental contract, but keep getting a damned recording in English/ Spanish, telling me to "call back, as all of our reps are busy" at their tiny office in East York. BS; no one's there! I finally got through to their national "extend reservations line" and wound-up talking to a "semi-live computer voice" to get the rental extended until January 5th. I'm getting headaches from listening to shitty Talk Radio WSBA 910-AM's radio ad rotation of 6 crappy ads. I just heard an ad for "oyster pie"; what a sickening and revolting thought that is! I wouldn't eat oysters of clams, even at gunpoint! It's now pouring and 36°F outside, and everyone's left the Complex, except me. I have to stay another 2-hours. Crap. NWS' Regional Map shows *freezing rain/sleet and snow* to the east and north of us, right now. I'm leaving in case it blows this way. And it did on the way home, as I drove farther north toward East York.
I unloaded several more boxes of Office Personal/Corporate files to my basement for storage, watered & fed Murphy and the cleaning people did their usual great job on the Condo. I had a few cotton throw rugs to finish drying and put down, which were still damp in the dryer. Next comes the computer and other electronics on Friday and, if need be, I'll go back in on Monday morning to get the remainder of it, since I don't have the Jeep's large cargo bay to transport it all with, in one "safe" trip for the delicate electronics. This puky little compact 2012 Ford Focus SEL rental car, just won't adequately/safely hold it all during a very careful and delicate transport. I skipped lunch and dinner, as the flu was still kicking my butt and I called it a day at 7:30pm. I've dropped 8½-lbs in 3 days.
I was up at 3:30am on Wednesday, feeling somewhat better without all the night aches/pains/, sweats/chills and fever, but still coughing *furballs* and sneezing, watered & fed Murphy, logged-on to check the weather and news sites, and made some breakfast. I think all the aspirin I took, helped to break the fever. I had Fresh-Squeezed OJ, Scrambled Eggs, Hash Browns/Fries, Bacon, a Bananna and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from fresh, whole beans) with my Chemex® Drip System. I was finally starting to get some of my appetite back since getting this flu, but I knew it'd be a week-plus until I wasn't contagious anymore to others, especially with all this sneezing/coughing.
NWS' (Nat'l Weather Service) Site is showing that we're going to "lose the weather" in the first week of Jnauary, and snow is coming our way. Damn, but it's about time. Mother Nature has given us quite a break up until now. I've been saying, for the past 6-7 weeks, that "Mother Nature's In Charge; We're Just Along For The Ride." – John D.M. Shelley II we should be under 1-2ft of snow and temps should be in the 15-20°F range. Now, it's finally going to happen. I'm just worried that I'll be driving this shitty rental car for another week-plus in the snowy weather, and won't have my AWD 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee "Laredo" back. So, I'll move everything except my Office desk and chair out of the Complex on this Friday & Saturday, just to be ready for it, so I don't have to go back down there. I left at 6:15am.
After stopping at Sheetz® for a large coffee and a smoke, I picked-up yesterday's mail and opened-up at 6:45am. I finally heard back from my Friend, Jim, who'll be coming on Thursday with 2 helpers, to get the remaining 12ft Metal Benches and 3 massive Front Retail Counters. That'll about complete it for me, until next Spring, when the 2 upper 30ft x 100ft Brady GH frames, mulch and topsoil piles will be be taken away by their respective Auction purchasers. I started packing-up the 3 remaining boxes in my now almost-empty Office, and will remove all of the computer hardware etc, on Friday and, if need be, on Saturday.
I took home 4 more boxes of Office & Personal files, some minor computer hardware and software, and talked to a Hellam Twp Official about his purchasing 15-20 field-grown trees, which I have to inventory and give him price for, within 2 weeks, so they can be dug/re-planted early in the Spring. I'll work on that when the fields either dry-out or freeze and the 2-3" mud isn't a factor, anymore, as it is from Tuesday's 1¼" rainfall. I left at 1:30pm, after he'd left and another couple were in finishing their loading of all the stone they'd purchased. I'll have to inventory what's left up in the Stone Storage Area for one of my former employees who wants whatever's remaining. I had Rx's to pick-up, drycleaning to drop-off on the way back, and it was good to get home and rest. The flu was still kicking my butt and I was feeling like crap, once again. I had to reinstall the printer drivers for the HP 1660 D-DeskJet, using the old CD's version, since it was stalling-out in between multiple pages and during envelope printing. I cahnged USB ports, deleted it, reinstalled it, "troubleshooted" it with WIN-7 Pro, tried new ports: still had a problem. It didn't "like the new driver version" I'd downloaded through HP's site, and the old version finally got it working the way it had for over the past 5-6 years, on the Office Computer. It was 9:15pm until I finally got that straightened-out and working correctly, and decided to call it quits for the day, while I was ahead. I wonder if this CME was causing the problem?
4:15am Thursday came much too early; I could have slept another 3-4 hours. I think I might have pnuemonia, instead of the simple flu, as my breathing is very labored. Again, the "whatever" had me in its grip, and the cold water in my face didn't help; aspirin did, somewhat. I grabbed my Turkish Bathrobe, as it was only 16°F outside and 70°F inside the Condo, turned-up the heat to 78°F, watered and fed Murphy, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ, Scrambled Eggs, Country Sausage, Potato Pancakes, 3 mugs of French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee and taook a Bananna along for the ride into work. I'd buy an Italian lunch, from Frank's Pizzeria down the road, for Jim and his helpers, coming from Pittsburgh at 9am this morning, to get the remaining 12ft Metal Benches and 3 massive Front Retail Counters. I emptied the 3 bldg wastecans, cleaned the Office Bathroom toilet & sink – last time I'd ever do those "boss jobs" – and began sweeping and prepping for the removal of the Counters. There'd be a "mess " there after they were removed, and I'd need to sweep and vacuum, once again, before tearing-down my Office Computer Hardware, today and tomorrow, and completely-abandoning the Complex, for the Winter months.
Shit! My 2 Main Retail Bldg Modine PDP LPG Heater pilot lights went out, and there's no heat in the building! I've have myself barricaded in the Office, whose heater is still working – the 3 x 1,000gal tanks are still reading 60% full – but there's no ladder left for me to get up to each unit and re-light the pilot lights. The wind must have blown them out. It's 14°F and the bluilding is getting colder by the minute. I have an ***emergency call*** into Suburban Propane to come and re-light the pilots, so I have some heat in here. Otherwise, I tear down the Office Computer and take it all home today. They arrived at 9:30am, relit the 2 large LPG heaters: one's electric fan motor is burned-out, and the other's working temporarily, but who knows for how long? I'm bailing-out today with my Office equipment and not coming back on Friday. I'll get the rest of my equipment next week, after New Year's Day and its *drunks' carnage*, is over and done.
Jim and his two helpers had the 3 Front Counters and 15 12ft-long Metal Benches loaded by 2pm – I brought-in 2 lg pizzas for us all – and were soon gone. Now, the Main Retail Bldg is desolate, empty and completely barren: before and after. The Main GH (VWGH) is also completely empty: before here and here, and after.
