Temps have moderated considerably over the past 2 weeks. Day temps
are in the mid-40°Fs and night temps in the low-30°Fs. After seemingly
endless weeks of bone-crushing, bitter cold weather, it's a relief to
see it raining — though not this bad — instead of snow or ice storms. The Farmer's Almanac
had called for a blizzard around New Year, but higher temps have foiled
that, thankfully, and brought us only rain. Thank you, thank you,
thankyouverymuch.
How was your New Year's Eve celebration? Me? I stayed home and was asleep by 10:30pm. Too many crazies and drunks out on the roads, on "amateur night". I had an excellent 2005, both personally and in my business, despite the LSM's dire predictions.
With the price of natural gas
only rising 3-4% so far, my home heating bill was only a couple of
bucks higher than the same month, a year earlier. And I'm seeing a huge
monthly savings at my business, since letting all the 7 massive
greenhouses freeze-out, this Winter. So far, so good.
On New Year's Day, I went to Mom & dad's for dinner, a traditional York County-Pennsylvania Dutch Fare:
pork roast, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, applesauce and local vino.
Yum, and I can use the "good luck", this year, too. The roads were
almost empty, save a few families travelling to gatherings and dinners.
Same as last year, and the year before, and the year before that one.
Monday was a repeat of the Day After Christmas: many businesses were closed, but I won't go back into the rant I exploded with, last week. I opened my GC&N Complex at 10am, said Happy New Year to Pickle, as I walked-up the front steps, and dutifully did 3+ hours of website and paperwork. Damn, I miss him terribly , at this time of year, and will miss him even more in the coming Spring and Summer months.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh, "the munchies"; do I ever remember them from my liberal, dope-smoking college days, back in the 60s? LOL!

This story
brought a huge lump to my throat on Tuesday, so I mailed them a $50
contribution. It can hardly get any worse than what they've been
through.
Gas prices at the local pump have risen 10¢, over the past two weeks:
Unleaded Regular is now at $2.35/gal, Unleaded Plus at $2.45/gal, and
Unleaded Premium at $2.65/gal. Diesel fuel has dropped to $2.79/ gal.
Kerosene (K2 heating oil) has also dropped to $2.75/ gal. BFD.
I have rapidly lost all faith in Microsoft, after using their products
and defending them for many years, for their ability to put out any
application which isn't flawed with virus-prone holes,
which hacker-scumbags can use to compromise users' computers. I believe
that these problems are deliberately created, in order for "cottage
industries" — virus detection and repair applications — to spring-up
and flourish. I wouldn't be surprised if former MS employees, or their
unrelated designates, are gifted with advance knowledge and fixes to
these problems, be it virus, file-related, graphic-related, or
whatever. The tens-of-hundreds of patches which MS has issued over the
past 8-10 years, is astounding and unwarranted, for a company with the
"IT brain trust" they have. All this crap should have never happened,
and I believe it's been intentional, from the beginning, as a
revenue-generating stream for MS-annointed "friends". Tinfoil hats,
anyone?
One of my favorite TV shows, which I hardly ever got to watch last
season, because of working so many long hours, is FOX-TV's "24", on
Monday nights at 9pm. I just ordered the "bundled" DVD set of Seasons 1-2-3-4,
to watch over the Winter months, in preparation for upcoming Season 5.
Other than The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, The Weather
Channel, The Food Channel and occasionally FOXNews, "24" and various
and sundry documentaries or specials, that's about it for me, for
commercial TV, these days. Too much crap and not enough content in
today's TV programming, IMO. I do have a TV Card (PVR 350) in my home computer, which is tied-into my CATV and lets me watch it all in a window, whilst working on my weekly Journal,
listening to streaming audio or doing whatever I'm doing. I haven't
been upstairs to my cool loft's entertainment center (Sony 37" TV, Sony
VHS, Sony BetaMax 900, Bang+Olufsen Stereo, Infinity RS-2 Speakers) for
2+ years.
It was another dreary, raw, cold week, with 1" of rain, occassional
snow squalls and upper-30s/ lower-40s temps, day and night. At least it
wasn't snow. But hey, it's Winter here in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
