The Weather Outside Is Frightful

and it's going to get even worse through January and into Ferbruary, according to NWS's Joe Bastardi, and possibly into early March. These are the guys I listen to 24x7, at NWS (National Weather Service) in State College, PA, near Penn State. No other local or national weather service even comes close. In fact, NWS feeds their 10 computer models of all kinds of weather, to every TV and radio station in the country, for their usage.
This week's Blizzard is supposed to turn into a "mixed bag"of snow/ice/rain, afftecting most parts of the Mid-Atlantic and all of the Northeast. In our area - York, PA - it was all snow, and lots of it. I'd brought-in plenty of Marlboros, food and juice, not to mention 10gals of homemade Wick Fowler's 2-Alarm Chili© to keep me tided-over for a few days until it's all over. I gave Mom & Dad 46lbs and Lee & Annette 3lbs of it on Tuesday, to "warm their insides".
It snowed until almost midnight Wednesday, according to NWS, though I had gone to sleep around 9pm. I called Arthur aroumd 7:30pm and he was going in early after dropping Bob at work; I'd be in around 10:00am or earier, depending upon road conditions. The main roads are well-plowed and almost snow-free, but the side roads are full of ice and slush, which will re-freeze overnight. And we're to get another 1-2" on both Friday and Saturday. We've got a long way to go until Spring arrives.
Around The Garden Center
The third snowstorm of the week was bearing down upon us all day and finally hit at the widely-predicted 12am - 5am. It was a big storm, extending from Pennsylvania back through Louisiana, coming both across from the Midwest and up from the Gulf. Two storms merged into one large one, but all we got were snow showers. Most of it passed to the east of us and up into New England. I had an 8pm meeting to go to on Friday the 21st, but it was postponed until tonight, Friday, the 28th, according to the sign posted on the door.
The forecast is for bitter cold to set-in the rest of the weekend, with highs only reaching the teens and lows in the single-digits. Brrrrrrrr! I hate this cold weather and long for Spring, which really just isn't "right around the corner". We've got a long way to go before it gets here. It was 25°F/ Wind Chill 10°F at 10am on Friday, and I had the heat cranked-up to 79°F, and I was still cold. I had an English Muffin and OJ for breakfast. I didn't have any reason to go out, so I stayed inside all day Friday. With nothing-worth-a-shit on TV, I watched a few of the many 235 DVR'd movies from one my hard drive folders, "Movies": "B-2 Bomber", "Swordfish", "Sum Of All Fears", "SWAT" and "Broken Arrow", all day. By 9pm, I had an ice-pak on my back, was ready for some aspirin and bed.
Uh oh, looks like we're in for a really big snowstorm next Wednesday. Swell Shit.
It was 5°F/ -6°F Wind Chill, when I got up Saturday morning at 8:30am , after 12 glorious hours of sleep. I had plans to go buy a few new work belts for my jeans, some new new Lee jeans and get some more OJ, but didn't want to go outside in bitter cold like that. But I did, and temps were already up to 10°F/ Wind Chill 6°F, so it was tolerable and I went out shopping. I found what I needed at Sears: new Lee jeans and a down vest w/ hood, and 3 (non-concentrate) OJs at WEIS Markets. It was still bitter cold, so I made another run back to WEIS and got what I needed for 10gal of chili. I spent the evening cooking hommemade chili. It was awesome, and the first time in a year that I've done any real cooking. Maybe I'll get back into it again, and begin cheffing 3-4-5-6-7 course dinners for Family and friends. Time will tell.
After 10hrs of sleep without any back pain, I was up at 8am, fed and watered the cat, got dressed and headed out to Rutter's to get some coffee and Marlboros. I had an English Muffin, OJ and coffee for breakfast. It was 8°F/ Wind Chill -2°F, and bitter cold once again. It's supposed to get worse until the mid-week Winter Storm gets here on Wednesday, or so. Nothing definitive as of yet from NWS (Nat'l Weather Service) in State College, PA. But I'm keep a close watch on their maps and forecasts at Accu-Weather.
I don't know about you, but I've had enough of Winter, one month into it. And we've got a long way to go until Spring arrives. The bitter cold is the worst in my memory. The snow I can plow, shovel and deal with, but with temps in the minus range, it's too much for me to deal with. I just want to stay inside and stay warm until Spring gets here. But I have to go into the Garden Center 1-2 days/ week to get the mail, water the 4 Greenhouses and get any needed paperwork done. The Main Building is ice-cold until the 3 large LPG, forced-air Modine heaters warm-it-up, which takes nearly an hour. My office on the northwest side of the Main Building is especially cold and takes even longer to warm-up.
I went over to Mom & Dad's for lunch on Sunday at 1pm: grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup; "comfort food" from my childhood. Then home at 2:30 to find a repairman for the middle panel horizontal blind in my sunroom, which crashed last night as I was lowering it, to keep the warmth in and cold out. The left and right panels work fine; it's the middle one causing me the problem. The 4 sprocket wheels came out of both ends and I have the bottom resting on the rattan couch in the sunroom, until I can find a suitable repairman who knows how to put it all back together correctly. I tried for almost 2hrs last evening, but to no avail. I'll make some calls on Monday from work.
I went to Lee & Annette's for Sunday dinner at 4pm, and Linda & Scott, two good friends and customers were also guests. It was 3°F when I left at 7pm, and not having pre-warmed the Jeep, I was shaking so violently from the bitter cold, that I lost control of the steering wheel 3x and almost wrecked. I pulled over into a gas station, and let the SUV warm-up before I continued the journey home. No, I didn't watch the AFC Playoffs, where the Steelers beat the Jets, 24-19.
It was 1°F/ Wind Chill -9°F when I got up on Monday morning, so I decided not to go to the Garden Center today with Dad. The NWS has ameliorated their forecast for the "big blizzard" Tuesday night - Thursday afternoon. Great! Doesn't bother me a bit. I hate plowing and shovelling the Center, so less or even no snow is good news. I'll keep following the NWS maps and forecasts. The rest of the Winter isn't looking very good, either.
I went into the Office on Tuesday to get the mail, get some final paperwork done, do the 2011 weekly work schedule in WIN-7s MS-Word 2009 and stopped at the last week of September, get some bills paid and checked the water pipes. After the storm is over on Thursday morning, Arthur and I will again plow and shovel, depending upon the roads to the Center, and I'll get the rest of the bills paid and mailed, and work on the 2011 weekly schedule and 21st Open House media arrangements, some more.
Oddly, both my home 25yr old phones' ringers quit working on Tuesday, and no one could get through to me. If I picked-up the line and someone was there, I could talk, but both ringers notifying me of incoming calls, had stopped working, as of Tuesday. They worked fine all weekend and Monday. I could call out, but no incoming call notification/ ringers could be heard. I called Verizon and they put me through a bunch of "automated voice tests" with unplugging/ re-replugging the two phones, checking the junction box connections; none of which worked. They said a Verizon Tech would be out betweem 8am - 6pm, and that I should be home to receieve him. I was, but I figured that they'd be out looking for downed limbs and telephone lines all day in the storm, and postpone simple housecall repairs. A repairman called at 5pm, and said the trouble was at their substation, and he'd have it fixed within a ½ hour. He did, but I'm still getting two new AT&T phones, anyway.
True to prediction from NWS, we got hammered by 9-12" of new snow on Wednesday morning and Wednesday, with it finally ending Thursday morning around 1am or so. I had all the food and cigs I needed to stay inside for the day while the plows did their work. I was up at 8am, and it was coming down pretty hard, but lightened-up around 10:30am, and we were waiting for the 2nd part of the storm to hit later in the afternoon with 6-12" more snow. Yikes! We're officially under a "Snow Emergency", as of 1:00pm, with another 8"-12" coming toward us. The 5 biggest storms we've had are: 1972 Agnes Hurricane, 1996 Blizzard and Flood, 1993 March Superstorm, 1958 Superstorm 2003 President's Day Storm.
The “Virtual Cabin” – A Novella
Since my Friday meeting was rescheduled, I drove up to The Cabin for Friday night and Saturday and Saturday night, as I had lunch planned at Mom & Dad's and dinner at Lee & Annette's, on Sunday evening.
My driveway had been plowed by Randy, and it looked as though Adam's Junction had gotten 8-10" of snow, as compared to York's paltry 1-2". I drove under the carport next to the kitchen door, disarmed the building, took my gear inside and Jenny (the mixed-breed, half-frozen puppy I'd found along the road, rescued, and bought from her uncaring owners for $150, last Winter), was happily-waiting for me. I refilled her 3 bowls, turned-up the heat, and grabbed an armload of split firewood from the back porch for a fire. After lighting it and unpacking, I carried in a 3ft log for the hearth fire, once I had a suitable bed of coals and flame. I re-armed the building and turned-on the motion-sensitive, automatic front/ rear spotlights and driveway sensor. It was beginning to get dark outside at 5:15pm.
Weary, I sat down in my overstuffed leather chair by the fire, with my books piled all around, and nodded-off for a nap. Jenny curled-up at my feet on her Kodiak bearskin rug. I dreamed of many of the things I'd been through in the past 10-12 weeks, both pleasant and unpleasant, and woke with a jolt. I needed sleep, so I took a shower, took 2 Corricidin HPB gel caps for my runnny nose and watery right eye, and went to the Master Bedroom at 9pm. I left the furnace heat at 77°F, since it was 3°F/ Wind Chill -20°F outside in the mountains, always twice as cold as York is, and 3-4x as much snow.
I was up at 8:30am, made breakfast — an English Muffin, Sunnyside-up Eggs, Fresh-Squeezed OJ and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from fresh, whole beans) with my Chemex® Drip System — and decided to go for a drive into town. I did the dishes and put them in the rack to dry. It was Sunday and most everyone would be headed for their Church. I passed the Police Station, and 4 of the 5 Deputy's cars were parked, as was Sgt Clay Atler's. I didn't see Chief Bunce's car in the lot. Everything was closed until 12noon, so I just drove through the town, admiring the pristine 19th century architecture and wrought-iron fences surrounding most every home. He was glad to see me after so many weeks away, and updated me on the "Outlaws" incident and a few minor crimes which had happened since I was last here. Nothing that they couldn't handle. (The DA and Grand Jury had no problem with my actions that day and handed-down no indictments against me: "justified".) I had to be back in York for 12noon lunch with my Parents and a 4pm dinner with a friend and his wife in nearby Dallastown, so I'd be packing-up and leaving soon. I said goodbye and left for The Cabin, to get packed-up and prep The Cabin for my absence.
It was nearing 10:30hrs (10:30am) Sunday, so I refilled Jenny's 3 bowls, turned down the heat to 72°F, left the kitchen sink water trickling, in case power went off in the coming mid-week snowstorm, so the water pipes wouldn't burst. I packed-up my gear, made the bed, loaded the gear it into the Jeep, armed the building and left for York.

We didn't cause the recent Global Warming and we cannot stop it. Solar Activity appears to be the principal driver for Climate Change. CO2 is a useful trace gas in the atmosphere, and the planet would actually benefit by having more, not less of it, because it is not a driver for Global Warming and would enrich our vegetation, yielding better crops to feed the expanding population.
