When the brutal cold settles-in for an extended stay — thanks Canada! — every living thing suffers; none more so than the creatures who live in the wild. Hundreds of birds are fed daily here, and I also allow rabbits, squirrels etc to take refuge in the truck and equipment buildings. I leave partial loaves of bread, heads of lettuce and carrots for them. The past 2 weeks have been so bitter cold that the bowls of (necessary) water have frozen solid.
On Thursday, it was so cold, -35°: F wind chill, the water pipes in the pump house, attached to the Main Building, froze solid. I put a small electric heater on the inside wall of the Office bathroom, where the pipes come in from the pump house, but after 2 days of no water, and a frozen door on the pumphouse, I had to call in a locksmith ($75/hr). I tried to get the 3 doorhinge pins out, but couldn't budge the last one. The doorknob broke away from the deadbolt. They arrived at 12:30pm on Saturday, drilled out the old lock, got the door off and replaced the lock. I put a "torpedo" (kerosene) heater into the pump house to thaw out the holding tanks, metal and cpvc pipes, and then a pipe burst from the ice blockage. Next, I had to call in a plumber ($85/hr) to replace a 3ft section of ½" cpvc pipe, which brings water into the Main Bldg and Office. All in all, an expensive day: $245 in repairs.

I've been using the torpedo heater and heat tapes all week to thaw them where the enter and exit the ground, but have a mere trickle of water instead of the usual 20 gal/min. Tens of thousands of containers of nursery stock, and hundreds of thousands of quart and gallon pots of perennials, need watering. I'm bringing-in two employees on Friday, to help me run hoses from the Pump House to the 4 30ft x 100ft Greenhouses, so I can get some watering done over the weekend. There's 15-17" of frost in the ground right now, and I don't see things thawing-out anytime soon. The snow-pack just insulates the cold from thawing.
