you can listen to all the unadulterated BS coming from DC and The White House, but the fact is we're in for a depression, not just a moderate recession like we've been through. The "glory days" of America are over. And following the depression will come hyper-inflation.
There is no recovery. It's the US Federal Gov't doing all the hiring. It's all in their socialist minds that we're recovering from a recession, when federal, state and local taxes are going up, small businesses like mine lose customers, who've lost their jobs or are just plain scared of what will happen next week or next month. I can't blame them at all. I'm quite worried, myself, for what I see coming in January 2011, when all the regulations and taxes kick-into effect.
I see the Feds taking-over more and more of the private sector, strictly-controlling the Net, taxes going through the ceiling, more Gov't do-nothing employees being hired than private sector workers, the economy sagging even further into a morass, a depression unlike anything the world has ever been through, the stock market bubble collapsing, hyper-inflation, gangs of unemployed, starving people roaming the streets and breaking into homes to steal food just to survive, home invasions, robberies, civil unrest which makes the 70s & 80s look tame by comparison, American cities being "dirty nuked" by murderous, subhuman muslim filth, food stores emptying-out and not being refilled on time, looting and rampages, Conservative Citizen Militias shooting and killing looters/rapists/robbers/home invaders etc by the tens-of-thousands since the police and National Guard are overwhelmed with the numbers of rampaging looters and their violence, bread costing $150/ loaf and so much more I could fill the page. I see Law & Order broken down into its most carnal components: survival at any cost, to anyone who gets in their way. I see illegal alien filth and muslim garbage bombing hospitals, nursing homes, schools, day care centers, college campuses, shopping malls, sports gatherings, busses, carjackings and so much more. Around The Garden Center™
Friday was one of the nicest days we've had in many weeks. 73°F and only 34% humidity. It was nice not sweating or having to use the AC in my office. I finished-up two more Landscape Estimates and HICPA Contracts, and gave them to Rich, my Staff Registered Landscape Architect at the 3pm Key Staff Meeting, so he could present them with his designs directly to the prospective clients. It was also a good day for my 20-year, 43 year-old friend Jim's funeral and burial, in New Freedom (PA). I went to his viewing at 1pm on Thursday, and the place was packed.
I'm transferring hundreds of movies from my Seagate 360Mb External HD to the Western Digital 1-Tb HD, for storage and replay/ restore. I'll use the older Seagate260 to back-up the 2 front counter register computers, while using my two new 1-Tb WD HDs to store and back-up the office and home machines'' data. Working on the transfers, right now. It's going to run all night.
The septic pump quit on Friday afternoon, due to moisture in the wires and a short-circuit, so I had to get our septic pumper in to re-splice the 6 wires and reseal them. The 5hp pump ($6,500) is working fine, but the wiring is absorbing water. Shouldn't be happening, even after 21 years. Damn.
The 3 wells shut-down sometime Friday night and none of the 12 zones got watered. Sediment is clogging the system and shutting down the holding tanks. I cleaned the filter on Saturday morning, reset the tanks, and am waiting for the well to re-charge, so I can re-program the watering system to go through its actions on the zones. Otherwise, with 95°F-plus temps on Sunday and Monday, lots of nursery stock will be fried by Monday, without adequate watering. Shit; it's always "something", here.
The roads were all but deserted on the way into work on Saturday morning at 7:30am, but I expect them to fill-up as the day goes on and everyone else goes shopping for BBQ food for Sunday, July 4th festivities and get-together's. Our watering system didn't go off, since it was clogged with clay falling in from the walls of the 419ft well. I had to manually scrub the filter and reset the system, checking it every hour of so. Ditto, all day Sunday, while everyone else was celebrating our Nations 234th Birthday, I was scrubbing the filter and resetting the irrigation system in 100°F heat/ Heat Index 106°F. It was awful. I went to Mom & Dad's for an old fashioned 4th of July Picnic Lunch: hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, watermelon.
On Monday morning at 8am, Jennifer gave me her 2 week notice that she was quitting. She's leaving Monday, July 19th to go to work for another MD company who works for the State of Maryland as a landscape inspector, like her husband Dave, does, after leaving me 4-5 years ago. No, I'm not mad or angry; just very, very disappointed that she'd leave me in the middle of my season, as her husband did at the beginning of my season 5 years ago. I like them both personally, but resent what they've done to my company. I've hired a lady with 32yrs in the business as Nursery & Greenhouse Manager, but not horticuluralist, since she's not degreed and certified. This is quite a bad time for me, for her to be leaving, but she's been "fast tracked" into the position over 5 other candidates and can't turn it down. Too much money and benefits etc, which I can't match.
Exhibiting prudence, I cut short our work days to 8am - 12noon, normally from 8am - 5pm, due to the excessive heat, humidity and accompanying heat indexes. Although the LSCP Crew takes plenty of water along and frequent breaks, I see no reason for heat stroke or exhaustion, simply for a landscape job. We'll just extend the current and future jobs a few extra days, until temps get down in the more manageable mid-80s range, instead of the near-100°F. I've had heat stroke once in NYC at 115°F, and it wasn't fun waking-up at a Sloan-Kettering Hospital, packed-in-ice, in the ICU.
We're in a serious drought once again, with a mere 5" of rain in June, instead of the 13-15" we usually have. We've had none so far in July. Plants are withering-up and defoliating like I not seen in many years. No wonder people aren't planting or doing landscape jobs, even with the Drip Irrigation Systems which I spec-in for their gardens.
On Tuesday, I saw two banks' electronic signs reading 106°F. Same on Wednesday; 105°F. My Jeep's thermometer read 99°F. We quit at 12 noon and I called the LSCP Crew back in so none of them would get heat stroke or exhaustion. My first loyalty is to my employees, always.
All the electric power — household, CATV, NET etc — went-off at 4pm, and finally came back at 7pm. Over 45,000 customers were affected. Red Lion and Hanover still son't have power, as of 2pm Thursday. The currrent power grid is so outdated and fragile, and each year the demand upon it increases manifold, that we're going to have a "brownout/ blackout" like never seen before.

After leaving the GC& Complex around 12:15pm, due to excessive heat, humidity and heat indexes, I drove up to The Cabin just to get away from it all.
Jennifer's two-week notice resignation had me bummed-out, though I was expecting "something was amiss with her", and with 4-6 hours to kill, I wanted to get caught-up on some chores around The Cabin and property. I pulled into the circle drive, with it's front deck and massive picnic tables, disarmed the Choice One Security System, and Jenny was all over me like "white on rice", happy to see me. We rolled around on the bearskin rugs, and I gave her a good rubdown and back-scratching; something I hadn't done in several weeks. Her food and water dishes were refilled quickly, and she was appreciative.
Even though the property is heavily-wooded, it was hot up there, but a mildly-cool breeze blew through the trees. I unpacked my overnight bag, shaved, showered and got into some clean clothes. My mailbox runneth over with virtual mail. I brought my cellphone along on this trip. I needed to go into town and make a few important stops about the Dewey Holtzapple Shooting on June 4th, and where it legally stood. Plus, I needed some 4-5 furnace/ AC filters (1" x 16" x 25") to replace the one that'd been replaced once in the Winter.
I drove into Adam's Junction to see and chat with Sheriff Roy Bunce, but he kindly referred me to the County DA, who was handing the Dewey Holtzapple Shooting Case, with the Grand Jury. Roy looked at his latest reports and said "it was self-defense and no action would be taken against me by the County or State of PA". BUt he also advised me to call DA Stan Robbins, and speak to him directly, and if possible, have a face-to-face meeting about it all. He have my the DA's card, and I promised to get on it ASAP. "Good shooting", Sheriff Bunce said. "There only 29 of those assholes left, and we're hoping that you can neutralize them all. I don't think a Grand Jury in the County would have a problem with it". I wasn't so sure. 30 dead men, all by me? But meth labs and coke distribution points were another matter, for the Feds. Not for me.
I called DA Stan Robbins' office number and left my cellphone with his paralegal sec'y. She said she was familiar with the case and he'd call back before the end of the day to talk.
County DA Stan Robbins called back with 15 minutes, and said that the County Grand Jury wasn't going to prosecute me, for killing Dewewy, in self-defense. They wre glad he was dead, and wished I take-out all the Holtzapple scum. He also reminded me that if I killed the rest of the Holtzapple Clan, in self-defense, no charges would be filed, but I'd have to *prove that* scenario. Usually, the local police confiscate the killing weapon — Mu Kimber 1911 "Eclipse Target II" .45cal ACP — and Concealed Carry Permit, but they decided not to because of my 3-yr Special Forces service in 'Nam in the 70s.

The 45-0 vote came four days after a Supreme Court ruling made it almost certain that Chicago's handgun ban would be overturned. The high court ruled Americans have a right to own a gun for self-defense anywhere they live. The new city ordinance bans gun shops in Chicago and prohibits gun owners from stepping outside their homes, even onto their porches or garages, with a handgun. It will take effect in 10 days.
