Last Friday and Saturday were two of the nicest weather days we've had in a while; cooler, less humidity and very tolerable. It didn't last long, though. Sunday, my day off, was a steambath. I slept in, feds the cats, had a leisurely breakfast and went food shopping. Then, off to the massive York Galleria Mall for some Lee® Jeans, to replace the patched ones I've been wearing for the past 2 seasons. I noticed that new jeans cost around $29.95, while new 'patched' and 'torn' ones cost $59.95! Yikes; I'm wearing the costlier brand, without even knowing it.
Gas prices are still rising at the pump; this week to $2.89/gal, for Unleaded Regular. Unleaded Plus is at $3.09/gal and Unleaded Premium is now at $3.19/gal. Both diesel and kerosene are seemingly still locked-in at $3.05/gal. Look for $3.50+/gal (Unleaded Regular) by mid-Summer, as "The Summer Driving Season" peaks, and the world price of oil climbs to $100+/bbl. We're going to see a lot more of these "price hikes", IMO.
On Tuesday, when I got up at 4am, fed the condo cats, made coffee and logged-on to scan the news and weather, it was already 73°F, and I knew it was going to be a stinker of a hot and humid day. It was; temps hit 91°F by mid-afternoon, and the promised cooling thunderstorms passed way north of us. The whole week was very uncomfortable, which is par for the course here in the Mid-Atlantic Region in Summer, and a harbinger of things to come for early September, which is also an unpleasant month. It ios what it is.
Our progress into 21st century retailing, continues. Our software/ hardware go-to-guy, Mark, from J&M Systems, who quite ably represents Synchronics® CounterPoint® POS (Point Of Sale) software, spent Tuesday afternoon with Dad, Jennifer, Justine and me, getting some software glitches fixed and smoothing-out our business proceedures. I can't say enough good things about Mark, and his lovely bride and business partner, Joann, since they've come to be our IT Partners. I'm hoping that by Spring '07, we'll be fully-operational with all the software and hardware we need in-place, to make our lives less burdensome. One step at a time.
I'm now running a 'crawl copy ad' on my local ComCast-CATV's 'Weather Channel' station in York (PA), for an experienced hardscape-mason to work with Seth, my Master Stone Mason. After losing my two most experienced landscape Crew Chiefs, Dave and Cole; Seth — also an experienced Crew Chief — needs some help getting all our high-end stonework done. He, Cole and Alan built this new StoneWorks Yard, just before the 16th Open House in April. Everyone of my Employees pitched-in to get it fully landscaped and drip-irrigated. I need to relieve some of the pressure on Seth and on Alan, who as Landscape Foreman, has again stepped-up and is coordinating the work of two leaderless landscape crews. Likewise, I need to relieve the pressure on Alan, as well. In the Spring, I had the *problem* of too many 'Chiefs', and not enough 'Indians'. Now, I have too many 'Indians', and not enough 'Chiefs'. Somehow, I'll get it all handled; I always do.
Although I usually listen to The Savage Nation on weekdays and weekends, from 6-10pm EST, on either KFMB-760AM, or on KSKY-660AM, in the same 6-9pm time slot. But for a refreshing change, I've tuned-in to The Mark Levin Show, on the venerable WABC-77AM, from 6-8pm, weekdays.

Violent thunderstorms moved through the area, late Wednesday afternoon-evening, and luckily they pushed by about 35 miles to the north of us, in the York (PA) area. NYC's northern environs really got hammered. Lucky us.
On Thursday morning, after an email from James, my landscape designer on Wednesday evening, it became readily apparent that I had to intentionally slow down the pace of jobs being done, due to personnel shortages, so that we could go backward and get all the detail work done on a number of recently-completed jobs. This would be SOP (standard operating proceedure) if the crew chiefs had been in-place, as in previous years. I'm just now becoming aware of some personnel issues which have existed for the past 2-3 years, and which may have contributed to two of my most experienced crew chiefs leaving, for obviously inferior jobs. I've been too isolated from the day-to-day machinations of many of the landscape crews' personalities, I guess. I deal more with customers' problems, the corporate direction, marketing and technical issues. My first inclination would be to sit each crew chief down, and have a "heart-to-heart" discussion with them, to resolve their problems. Failing that, I'd summarily fire them, and quickly replace each person having a seemingly-irresolvable issue, with someone who can do what's required by me.
Each day is a challenge for me — as it is, to a lesser degree, to those without the weight of a multi-million dollar corporation on their shoulders, thousands of trusting customers, numerous employees and their families to care for — to assess each situation as it presents itself, and take appropriate action. Mostly, I'm right, or I wouldn't be where I'm at, after 16 years. Once-in-a-Blue Moon, I'm wrong or caught unaware of the circumstances, and slightly fumble the ball. After a quick recovery, the situation is righted and life is good, once again. So it goes.

Potential jurors were questioned Monday for the murder trial of a convicted sex offender accused of kidnapping, raping and burying alive 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford. John Evander Couey, 47, appeared in court wearing a gray suit as officials began quizzing 284 potential jurors. Jessica's father, Mark Lunsford, sat in court behind the prosecutors' table, across the courtroom from Couey, a former neighbor. Kill the subhuman piece-of-filth.
