given that I've never had an allergy in my 57 years, and that just this Spring, I've been literally-sneezing my head-off, I guess that I now have 'them'. Many people have allergies from birth, some develop allergies in their teens, and still others, like me, develop them later in life. It seems that our own auto-immune systems are attacking ourselves, for some reason, or so I'm told. On the way home, last Saturday evening, it was raining lightly and I turned-on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo's wipers. Yellow stuff was smearing all over my windshield, so I hit the windshield-wiper-water switch, to clean it, and that worked. But as I drove the 15 miles home, everytime I used the wipers, "yellow stuff" — aka pollen — was being flushed from the air, and deposited on everything below. Everything that blooms — trees and shrubs, flowers, grass and weeds — emits gadzillions of microscopic pollen particles, which are wind-driven and deposited, who-knows-where, everywhere. Pollen alerts are posted on every TV channel's daily weather alerts, at this time of year. At my condo, which has a north-facing sunroom with lots of overhead glass, the windows were covered with yellow stuff, washed down by the rains. I could hardly see out of the windows, it was so thick. By 9pm, it was dark outside, and I used a flashlight to watch the pollen falling with the light rain, and it was getting worse. By 11pm, the windows and skylights were so coated with yellow stuff, that I couldn't see out of them. I always keep my Jeep in the garage at night, regardless of season, so it was safe from pollen coating. The other cars in my condo complex, were coated with yellow dust, smeared when the rains came. I changed the hypo-allergenc, micro-allergen, furnace/ac filter ($15.75ea), in the basement, and almost immediately felt the difference in air quality. I guess I don't remember previous years of pollen problems, since I really didn't have any allergies back then, but I'm sure noticing them, this Spring. This may be the worst so-called allergy season for most of those sufferers, so far, but I have no real past serious seasons to use in comparison, as a relatively-new allergy sufferer. There just isn't a 'simple cure' for those allergies, and I've got to endure it and build-up my immune system's response against it. Ever heard of alopecia? My auto-immune system's attacking the hair follicles on my legendary, 39-yr Handlebar Moustache. And it's falling-out, slowly. Heh. In another 2-3 weeks, on June 18th, I'll visit York's (PA) Dermatology Group, who will (hopefully) diagnose it, and prescribe a strong topical medicene, to halt and reverse the damage. In the interim, it's very, very, very disconcerting to watch this condition progress. Darnit, darnit, darnit.

Temps were in the uncomfortable, muggy, sticky, upper 80s all last weekend, and most of this week, and the *Grass Pollen Alerts* were very high, as compared to tree/shrub alerts, for the past 2-3 weeks, and many of my customers were suffering, as was I. Isolated T-storms were predicted, but they mostly moved north of us. Barely wetted the mulch, IIRC.
Understatement of the day/week/month/year: "Gas prices likely to stay high for driving season". And they'll get even higher, as the 'Summer Driving Season' goes on. With 3 large dump trucks, which, when fully-loaded, only get 7-8mph, I'm starting to feel the price increases on my monthly Rutter's Fleet Cards. Since each truck is equipped with a card, I can track the usage and mileage, and it isn't pretty, considering some of the high-end, long-distance jobs we do. I can certainly understand how it hurts some people, pretty bad, BTW.
On Memorial Day Holiday Weekend, Saturday was extremely busy at the GC&N Complex; at times we were totally-swamped, even with the extra staff I'd brought-in, to deal with the anticipated traffic. In previous years, I would have been open for both Sunday and Monday, too, and the retail crush would have been spread-out over 3 days, and not just consolidated into 1 day. Our 2 front counter computers were causing more-than-just-annoying, minor problems, with the Radiant®-Synchronics® 'CounterPoint®' software errors, which weren't yet resolved. By 1pm, Dad and Justine (my weekend, retail check-out lady) were PO'd at the many, unending software problems they were having, and by 3pm, I was also getting PO'd that customers were still stacking-up at the front counter, since register #2 was inoperable and unusuable, due to some system software errors. Blech! We wound-up having to hand-write receipts (in triplicate), like we did back in the early 90s, considering all the many, many thousands of dollars which I've spent to get us to where we're 'supposed to be', technically. By 3:30, the retail crush was over, and we relaxed somewhat. We're working on getting it 'fixed', BTW. Our crack-IT Team from JMSystems was here, late Wednesday afternoon, and got it fixed. Thanks Mark & JoAnn! My apologies to all the inconvenienced GC&N customers, last weekend.
We still seemingly *can't buy any rain, at any price*, here in the Mid-Atlantic Region, while the Plains, Midwest and Southwest US are being deluged with torrential rains. In the interim, we're sitting high-and-dry, and the predicted 'isolated t-storms' are mostly missing us, but what we need is 3-5 days of slow, soaking rains to replenish the ground moisture. Down to 2½ feet — yes, you heard that right — it's nothing but dust; absolutely zero moisture at the plants' rootball level, and they're suffering, bigtime.
No rain until Saturday or Sunday, now? And the Midwest, Plains and Southwest are getting deluged, still? WTH? We certainly don't need this high-pressure, hot-and-dry front, squatting upon us. WE NEED RAIN, darnit! We've stopped digging all field-grown nursery stock, since the soil is dust-like, and readily falls-away from the plants' rootballs, and they quickly die. We'll have to wait until the Fall rains return, or deeply irrigate and use Bio-Plex® on each plant, being dug.

A Walk Through Durham Township, Pa.
Before I visited Kathleen Connally's photoblog, I didn't know a thing about Pennsylvania's Durham Township, a scant 1½ hour drive from York. Even now that I've lingered over her luscious, light-filled images, I can't tell you how many people live there or how the residents tend to cast their votes. But I can testify to the township's natural splendor. I can easily conjure up images of how the snow gleams in the winter sun or the clouds whisk overhead. I know there are woods that hold treasures like old lime kilns, rivers that offer muskie fishing, and more than one place for young people to jump around (even in the cold). Many of the residents of Durham seem to glow in that gorgeous light—and maybe from the proximity to Kathleen, who seems to find the beauty in all things. I'm gushing now, but a walk through Durham Township can do that to you.
