if you think of the United States of America as a store, its recent decisions and scandals resemble a sale, perhaps a fire sale. Or maybe even a “Going Out of Business” sale.
The list of dramatic markdowns is breathtaking. They include trading away five murderous terrorists for a likely Army deserter, an open invitation to tens of thousands of illegal immigrants to cross the Mexican border, and a decision to recognize the terrorist group Hamas as part of the Palestinian government.
On the home front, environmental regulations will cost thousands of coal miners their jobs and drive up the cost of electricity for millions. The ObamaCare mess is hardly resolved, and the Veterans Affairs scandal keeps getting worse. The acting agency head reported the deaths of 18 more vets who were kept off the official waiting list in Phoenix.
Ticking quietly in the background is the mother of all threats – an Iranian nuclear bomb. That ticking grew louder last week as the ayatollah mocked our nation by standing in front of a banner that proclaimed, “America cannot do a damn thing.”
Technically, he's wrong. It's not that we cannot stop the mad mullahs' march. It's that President Obama has taken the military option off the table, and without it, Iran has nothing to fear. Our impotence was a choice.
Add to the combustible mix the expansionist moods in Russia and China, and the series of events recalls an observation by the late economist Herb Stein. Speaking in another context, he said that, “If something can't go on forever, it won't.” That sums up the current sense of the nation as a whole.
What seemed for years a steady and slow decline increasingly feels like a headlong race to the bottom. America is careening downhill, and a crack-up appears inevitable.
It is no coincidence that the deal with the Taliban to release five terrorist leaders from Guantanamo brought the first threat of presidential impeachment from a respected member of Congress. GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said that if Obama tried to release others without lawmakers' approval, it would lead to “people on our side calling for his impeachment.”
That is the nuclear option, and there is good reason why it has been so rarely invoked throughout history. And yet the intense fever gripping Washington, largely created by Obama's go-it-alone approach, needs to be broken. The country simply cannot continue to remain the beacon of the free world if we are consumed by our own dysfunction and distrust.
Impeachment is one way to try to resolve a political crisis, but as former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy argues in his new book, public opinion is a vital ingredient, and it is missing. Titled “Faithless Execution,” his book's subtitle, “Building the Political Case for Obama's Impeachment,” is based on McCarthy's claim that the legal case is solid that Obama has violated his oath to execute the laws faithfully.
That's an arguable point, but even to concede it means nothing because the Democratic Party has been so cowed into supporting Obama, regardless of what he does, that there is no chance to make the political case.
Indeed, we have reached this crisis largely because centrist Democrats have failed to stand up against Obama and demand more moderate policies.
Leaving aside occasional grumbling from party elders, he gets almost unanimous support from every Dem in Congress for every piece of his radical agenda. Evidence shows that one of his most pernicious practices, using the IRS to punish conservative groups, grew out of congressional demands from liberals. While that doesn't excuse Obama's role, it does demonstrate that his party has enabled and encouraged his improper conduct.
The result is that the constitutional system of checks and balances has been gutted as Democrats act as an amen chorus for the executive branch.
The framers put a high bar on impeachment, and merely attempting to draw up the articles is viable only when there is a bipartisan consensus that the president's immediate removal is necessary. We are a long way from that consensus.
Still, something has to give. And unless Democrats begin to put duty to country over loyalty to Obama, America as we know it is headed to a point of no return.

A Day In The Life
Awake at 6:15 on Friday morning to the sound of garbage trucks (recycled goods only units) picking-up their curbside bundles, it looked to be a repeat of yesterday's beautiful weather, and the same for the next several days. 56°F with a high of 80°F for the day. I made the usual Fresh-Squeezed OJ and had several mugs of steaming hot, French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee, as well as an English Muffin w/ Apricot Preserves. The window coverings installers were back at 10am to finish-up the installation at Dad's, and I left at 10:30 to pick him up to go to the 3 cemeteries – Mt Rose, Manchester Union and Prospect Hill – to decorate our Family's and Vets' graves. We grabbed a couple of double-cheeseburgers and large fries at FIVE GUYS Burgers & Fries for lunch, and did the round-trip in about 4 hours, despite the heavy traffic on Friday. The NSRA Street Rods were again in York for the weekend, and not only would many roads be closed for their parades, but traffic would be augmented by 4,000-6,000 cars and 10,000-15,000 attendees. I slept-in until 7:45am on Saturday, despite my 'impromptu nap' last evening. Another beautiful, sunny, 51°F start to the morning and a repeat of yesterday. I made coffee, had some Del Monte® Mandarin Oranges, skipped breakfast and checked the weather and news sites. I'd get something to eat after the 10am meeting at the old GC&N Complex, when I got back around noon or so. Mmmmmmmm, I smelled the Chicken BBQ on my way down Rt 24 thru Red Lion, met with the guys who will be starting
I dropped one dinner off at both Becky's and Dad's, and went home at 12:45pm, to put mine in the 'fridge for the next couple days, and made a Sliced Turkey Breast, Mayo/Lettuce/Cranberry on a Toasted Bagel. I cleaned out the Jeep, and will get it to the nearby Mister Car Wash (formerly Cloister Car Wash) this week, since I have 4 fully-paid coupons for the inside clean/outside wash-wax/undercarriage blast. By 7pm, I'd had tomorrow morning's food shopping lists organized, and found several NatGeo YT Films on Lions v Giraffes and Ferocious Honey Badgers, and wound-up watching them until 11:30. Sunday morning was another repeat of the previous 3 days. I was up at 7:30, had coffee, OJ and an English Muffin, checked email and the usual weather and news sites. 64°F and noticeably more
I decided not to go to Becky's at 8:30am tomorrow, and that Ben's Company was more-than-competent to get the landscape project underway with me; I had beds to change and laundry to do, plus some cleaning. He worked for me in 1995-96 and, with my blessing, went on to Penn State's Landscape-Horticultural-Architecture College, and has done very well for himself. I trust him and his guys. I'll go over later in the morning, after my own projects are underway, and will complete them when I get back in the afternoon. 2 loads of laundry, organizing bills to be paid, cleaning bathrooms, wet-mopping hard floors, sweeping-out the garage and checking the basement shelves for cans to be rotated-out-of-stock. Up at 7am on Thursday, I rebooted the now-"sleeping" computer, checked the weather and news, downloaded email and had some OJ and coffee. 66°F, rainy, cloudy and 96% humidity. Feels like Miami in August, out there. ***FLOOD WARNING*** still up and running. Nothing but lousy/crappy/bad economic news in the headlines – just what was expected from 0bummer&Co – so I got ready to go run a few errands and get some fresh air. I stopped at Weis Markets Gas 'n Go, used my accumulated 180-pts to get gas (Reg Unleaded $3.69/gal) at $1.86/gal, drove to a local garden center to get a replacement ornamental grass for Dad's front foundation gardens, and then over to Dad's. Too rainy and wet to plant anything, so I assembled one of his 2 new Oreck® vacuums, visited for a while and came home around 11:30am. I finished-up the last Chicken BBQ Dinner for lunch, took a couple of rifles down to the basement shop to field strip, clean and lube/oil, while listening to Rush, the morning's missed Chris Plante Show 3-hr Podcast. T-storm cells moved thru the area all afternoon, dumping additional inches of rain and overflowing gutters and drains. By 6pm, the rain had stopped, but more was on the way from the Gulf; Maryland and Virginia were also getting deluges. I streamed the usual Mark Levin Show, from 6-9, and then started wading thru all/some of the videos, which my YouTube subscriptions send me weekly. I had a food shopping list to compile for Sunday's Father's Day Dinner for Dad and Becky, and go over to her home in the morning to check/approve the landscape company's progress. Since I needed to get to Weis Markets by 8-8:15am, I called it an early night at 11pm.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and there's lots to do: Jeep service, work on Dad's landscape, cleaning ladies in for a half-day, help get the new realtor's large sign installed at the GC&N Complex, and prepare Sunday's Father's Day Dinner for my Dad, Sister and myself. Plus, whatever else comes up.
Conundrum.
The definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today in the United States of America:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it! That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it... And last but not least,
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?
Am I the only one missing something?

Just Google "survival" and see what comes-up. Damned-near everything you ever wanted to know how to prepare for this for-sure-coming "hellish holocaust", some of it in easy-to-download *.PDF format. Tens-of-thousands of websites are devoted to the topic of "survival". Do the same with "You Tube", and watch the thousands of videos. This is *NOT The Phony Y2K Crappola*; this is for real. I said numerous times that Y2K was a waste of time and money to prepare for, and that came true. Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs. Yesterday, we learned that President Obama believes that entrepreneurs don't build businesses. Ultimately, they're irrelevant. Take that for what you will." © Principles and Policy, July 14, 2012

I was hugely-pleased, a little stunned at the secrecy, but half-expecting a juicy trove of treasures.
It is called the Center of Military History. It is located 30 minutes outside Washington, D.C., at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The building itself is very nondescript.
But behind a series of highly alarmed doors and long, cement, camera-laden hallways. It is the highly sophisticated, climate-controlled treasure room where the army keeps its most precious artifacts.
The facility was built for $24 million in 2010. The cavernous warehouse is typically shrouded in total darkness. Motion lights illuminate only the areas in which someone is walking.
If I could get tickets, I'd fork over my first-born child. Oh wait; I don't have one. Heh. I'd go there in a heartbeat.
