i have several of those antiqued "No Trespassing" metal signs, one of which I've give to a friend, and the other 3 which I'm debating as to whether or not to put them up at GC&N's front and back entrances. One definitely goes to The Cabin's driveway, on a prominent tree, at the beginning of the long driveway.
Several of my employees do have objections, as does Dad. I frankly don't give a shit crap. If someone invades my businesses' property to steal or vandalize, IMO they need killing. If all the so called "law" will do is fine them or put them on probation, that's not enough. They need killing and it should make the local papers' front pages.
Criminal, rapists, home-invaders, murderers, robbers etc NEED TO BE WARNED THAT THEY'LL BE KILLED IF THEY TRY ANY *SHIT* WITH ME. Lawful or not, I'm putting them up.
Around The Garden Center™
After getting my epidural shot in the spine last Thursday, my day off, I was still hurting as I made the drive into work on Friday morning. It usually takes 2-3-4 days for it "to work", and supplemented by Gabapentin 100mg, I'd hoped it would work sooner. But it didn't; my Sciatic Nerve was *on fire* all day, Friday through Sunday.On Thursday evening, while on the phone with D••••, I made some major screw-ups to John's Journal, while deleting "old" server files, and had to get Doug to help me restore them. Luckily, I had requested a gdnctr v3 archival back-up, and he retrieved the index.htm file. Wheeeew! That was a close one.
Summer has officially begun. In the mid-70s to low-80s, the nights of 'frost advisories' are gone, and the sweaty, humid days of Summer are upon us, here in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Customers are "coming out of the woodwork" to get on our "List" for work to be done. Rich's vacation absence is causing me minor landscape estimate problems, but I'm working through them, slowly. Switching from 5 Landscape Designers to a Registered Landscape Architect has both advantages and disadvantages, but his professionalism far outweighs any of the 5 untrained people whom I'd hired before. He's due for a raise, as soon as he gets back.
I watched "Aliens II" on Saturday evening, and "Aliens III"; they were as scary as they were years ago hen they first debuted. Signorney Weaver was awesome! Since I didn't have to be at work until 11am on Sunday, I stayed-up late and watched both of them. Wowser!
Sunday was a cloudy, showery day, with virtually no retail activity. My back as hurting from a fall I took on Saturday getting out of one of the JD SkidLoaders, after loading mulch for a customer. There are foot-grips for climbing on and off of the machines, but they become loaded with soil and mulch, and no one washes them off, so the next operator doesn't have a slip or fall, dammit! I had a cold-pak on it after work, and slept with a heating pad. I also took plenty of aspirin, but not much helped. I worked on one of Rich's design plans, and got 2 of 3 phases finished after 4 days of labor. I went home at 4pm, and watched "Alien v Predator", a helluva movie, which I had DVR'd a while ago on my 1-Tb external drive, and "Underworld Evolution" on FXNetwoks.com.
Dad took-off Monday, so it was just Jennifer, Lee & me, and I had three, multi-phased LSCP Estimates to finish and mail out, with the HICPA Contracts. I also had 2 on-site meetings with owners to go over some 2008 plans and update, revise and re-price them both. I started that after getting back to the GC&N Complex around 3pm, after 2hrs on-the-road. I can't take the Vicodin and Gabapentin meds that Lee takes for his back pain; I couldn't drive coherently, and would probably wind-up in an accident or worse. I have to take aspirin and use cold-paks, only.
The 2-hour, 8th season "24" Finale was on Monday from 8-10pm, and I didn't miss it. I DVR'd it, and watched it again on Tuesday evening. It was "THE stem-winder" of all times, in the endings of an 8-yr series; trust me.
I missed "Justified" on Tuesday evening, as I was too tired to stay-up until 10 pm to DVR it. Dammit. FanCast, Hulu & FXNetworks are usually 1-2 weeks late in showing those missed shows, and I've got all the others DVR'd. I decided to watch the "Bourne Identity" with Matt Damon, at 8pm on www.FXNetworks.com, one in the series I hadn't DVR'd before. Good flick.
As usual, I took Thursday off, went to Best Buy and bought a 1-Tb Western Digital External HD to back-up the 2 Front Counter units. I have a 1-Tb Western Digital HD unit in my office and at home to back-up everything, daily and weekly. Then I went food shopping, mainly for the cats, called and talked to Mom for 2hrs, and laid down on the sofa with a cold-pak on my back. Too damned much work; not enough Family time!
I emptied all my .225/ .556cal NATO 20-30' 40 mags out into Tupperware bowls, on Saturday & Sunday to let the "springs & followers" 'rest'. Ditto with the .308cal NATO ammo in mags, to let the 'springs & followers' "rest", in both bases so there are no "stovepipes" or "jams", during sustained firing. I do the exact same thing with my Kimber .45cal ACP Mags, on a semi-weekly basis. You should too. No, they're NOT CLIPS; they're MAGAZINES, dammit.
The "Virtual Cabin"™: A Novella
After this frustrating week of only getting partial LSCP Estimates done, I decided to The Cabin on Thursday, after I'd finished my errands, shopping and visiting Mom, to relax from it all. Rich, my new Registered Landscape Architect (RLA) will be back on Tuesday morning, for an 8am mtg at a very large job site, to finalize the number which I need to get the 3rd phase completed, as well as 4-5 more estimates.
It was still early afternoon when I left for The Cabin, and I had a good 10-12hrs to myself and Jenny, to relax and unwind.
I arrived at 3pm, turned-off the alarm system, and greeted Jenny. She was all over me like "white on rice". I refilled her wet-dry-water dishes immediately, with provisions from the large pantry. I took my .50cal Beowulf and Kimber "Eclipse Target II" 1911 .45cal ACP and her out for a walk, hoping not to run into any bear or mountain lion families. But we did, almost immediately. The lions slinked away after I fired two shots at a nearby tree, and we didn't see them for the rest of the day. I saw a 60-80lb black bear cub climbing a tee, so I knew the mother was close. Jenny snarled, knowing it was probably the mother bear who attacked and wounded her badly. I have a 11-round mag on the Beowulf .50cal, and chambered a round, just in case. But I led Jenny away from the cub and mother potentially-hiding in-wait, and we avoided any bloodshed. Unless absolutely necessary, I've had enough killing for one lifetime.
Back to a peaceful walk, or so we thought. Within minutes, the male mountain lion was perched on a rock outcropping just 50-60yds ahead of us. I still had the .50 round chambered, flicked-off the safety for the 11-round mag, and took aim at him. We let the worn trail beneath the rock outcropping to avoid him, but he came bounding-down the rocks and across to our location. I had no option but to put him down with one shot to the head. I put another shot to the heart with my Kimber, as he was still making "noises". That finished him off. I would come back and bury him properly, later today.
I hate killing needlessly, but when my life in danger, or the lives of friends or family, I have no compunction about killing. Vietnam Spec-Ops/Green Berets taught me that back in the late-70s nd early 80s. No problem, baby. Still, I hate to kill an innocent, hungry animal, jut looking for food. But I'm not part of the 'food chain'.
I want back to The Cabin with Jenny, restacked 2 cords of split wood on the back porch, let it air and dry for the Summer, and would tarp it in October, for Winter usage. By then, I was soaked and dirty, an needed a shower and fresh change of clothes. I shaved, showered and changed. Felt good, and I was ready for the Winter of 2010-2011.
I went back to the site of the mountain lion kill, and buried the poor creature, knowing that his mate and cubs wouldn't have a father to grow-up with. Tears streamed down my face as I laid his 200lb carcass in the hole, and filled it in. I kept a sharp eye on my surroundings for predators and the lion family itself, seeking retribution. All clear.
As I walked back to The Cabin, all of a sudden the forest birds stopped chirping and tweeting; something was amiss. I chambered rounds in both my Kimber .45cal and Beowulf .50cal, and sought cover in a thicket 20yrs off the path. Sure enough, along came a black bear mama & papa family, with 4 new cubs, plodding along looking for food. They smelled my scent, almost immediately, and I fired the .50cal into a nearby tree, scattering all 6 of them. I 'beat-feet' back to The Cabin, while they were disorganized, as I didn't want to do any more killing today.
Once inside The Cabin, I set the alarm and kept a watch outside the windows, just in case one or two had followed me. All clear. I laid the .50cal and Kimber .45 out on newspaper on the 10ft oak dining room table, to be cleaned and reloaded, while getting Jenny her dinner. I heard a car coming up the 900ft driveway, and it was Sheriff Chief Roy Bunce, who'd heard the shots from where he was parked, trapping speeders. It was just a courtesy call, making sure everything was okay. I told him of the day's events, and he understood. On a property this size, there are going to be a lot of birthing dens, male and females who will kill for food, and attack at the slightest provocation, to protect their young.

You may already have Century Gothic on your Windows-XP machine, and that's almost always used for the body copy or subheads, so grab it, if you don't already have it; you're reading it now. They're free from my website. Grab 'em! Save them to your HD, and install to C:/Windows/Fonts (folder), thru your WIN XP Control Panel > Fonts > File > Install New Font. Simple stuff; just takes a few minutes.
Here are a few others, which have been used in my Journal: Papyrus and Acoustic Bass, and Caesar Regular and Carleton and Charrington Strewn and Catherine. If you get and install them, you'll see how much nicer these pages are to view and read. Plus, they add to your repertoire of available fonts in MS-Word, as WIN-XP System Fonts, so you can use them for your daily documents.
