A Day In The Life
Even for me, this was weird: I was sound asleep at 1am on Friday, when I suddenly woke to a disconcerting thought: my "Last Will & Testament" needs updating, and especially my collection of firearms (Class IIIs included), Cannon T-65 Gun-Safe, magazines, ammo and myriad accessories, along with my financials, needs updating. This was a "had to do project", even at this idiotic hour. The financials will, of course go to Dad and upon his passing, to Sister, Becky. But as I have no direct heir(s) to legally pass the firearms on to – and Becky sure doesn't want them – I needed to draw-up a list of potential recipients, and discuss it with each of them, ASAP. Or just sell them, privately. I got up, turned-up the heat, and came down to the computer to get
I slept-in Friday until 8:45am, 42°F, warmed-up the Condo, made French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from whole, freshly-ground Starbuck's® Dark French Roast Fresh Ground Beans) with my Chemex® Drip System, had some had some Del Monte® Red Grapefruit Sections, and 2 English Muffins with Raspberry Preserves. At 35°F outside, it was nippy. I grabbed my usual morning shower,, York Eye Associates called to notify me that my new clip-on sunglasses were in, and I loaded-up the Jeep with stuff for Dad and a few other stops, and left at 10am. Traffic was unusually heavy, with idiotic PENNDOT construction choke points all over the damned place. I got to Dad's, visited worked on some computer projects for him, left, got the other stops done and was back home by 1pm. Becky needed a curved-blade/handle snow shovel for her new condo, so I had to stop at Home Depot, Lowe's and Wal-Mart just to get one for her; after yesterday's lake-effect snow squalls, there's been a run on shovels and they're pretty scarce. Push the snow, don't lift it. Actually, I gave her my lighter, almost-new one, and kept the heavier, just-purchased one, for myself.
The trees are rapidly-changing color, while huge farm combines are taking-down the field corn and soybeans, and the grain transport trucks are all heading into Red Lion to the grain elevators, to drop their loads. The fields are 85-90% empty. The mountains' trees are changing color very quickly. Winter isn't that far away.
On the morning's round-trip, I saw that gas/diesel prices at the pump, had risen another 4¢/gal, since Friday, October 4th: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now at $3.27/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $3.37/gal, Premium (93 oct) is at $3.57/gal, with Diesel Fuel/Kerosene K-2 rising to $3.85/gal, at most stations, in the York (PA) area.After a large plate of Lasagne and rye/garlic bread, I went out for a 1¼-hr walk and ran into some fellow-CCW-ing neighbors walking their dogs and we talked while we exercised the labs and ourselves. I did the same procedure for my Condo' super-fast, super-fast HP 6000 Pro (Win-7 Pro) Computer PC unit at home, although they're all set for "Automatic Update". I checked the mail today, and nothing from Geisinger Health Care Options Co, yet. I loaded more magazines after getting home, got a FedEx delivery from MRE Depot and listened to more missed Chris Plante Show Podcasts until 11pm, did paperwork, filing, and garaged the Jeep. Suddenly, the temp was down to 49°F, dropping very quickly and I closed-up the Condo, and enjoyed the cool weather remnants. Finally, at 11:15pm, I closed-down and headed upstairs to bed.

T-storms moved into the area, streaming-up from the Gulf and Southwest, after unleashing severe storms and tornadoes thru the Southern states. Storms from the Midwest, after dumping heavy snow, brought rain from the Plains States and West, and the two systems merged in the 60s and 70s temps; no danger of snow for us. By 6:15pm, it was 67°F and rising. It felt and smelled like a Spring evening.
A third-to-a half of my CHCA Condo Complex is now empty: the "snowbirds" have all left for Florida, Texas, Arizona and other "Wintering-over" points, until next May. It's awfully quiet and empty here, already. All the people with 2+ vehicles, who have stayed behind, have usurped the empty driveways to make it look like there are people still there. Mail and newspaper delivery have stopped, but inside and outside lights are on automatic timers, and security systems are set to the max. I'm personally keeping watch on 3 units, right across the street.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and with only a Dr's app't on the schedule, so far, I will have time to get to other, way-overdue, back-burner projects, as long as some other things don't pop-up and take-up precious remaining days. Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs. It's not my intentions to be the judge here — that's God's "job" — but rather to "hasten the meeting" so that He can send the following subhuman filth to the "Fires of Hell", "River or Lake of Sulphur", or whatever He deems appropriate.
