Fifteen years after the carnage of 9/11, American foreign policy is still mired in its fossilized dogmas and dangerous delusions. The consequences are obvious. Iran, the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism and long an avowed enemy of the United States, has filled the vacuum of our ignominious retreat from the Middle East, even as the mullahs move ever closer to possessing nuclear weapons. Russia, Iran’s improbable ally, bombs civilians in Syria, kills the Syrian fighters we have trained, bullies its neighbor Ukraine, consolidates its take-over of the Crimea, and relentlessly pursues its interests with disregard for international law and contempt for our feeble protests. Iraq, for which thousands of Americans bled and died, is now a puppet state of Iran. Afghanistan is poised to be overrun by the Taliban in a few years, and ISIS, al Qaeda 2.0, continues to inspire franchises throughout the world and to murder European and American citizens.
So much for the belief, frequently heard in the months after the attacks of 9/11, that “this changes everything.” The smoking ruins and 3000 dead surely had awoken us from our delusions that the “end of history” and a “new world order” had followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, “a world in which nations recognize the shared responsibility for freedom and justice. A world where the strong respect the rights of the weak,” as George H.W. Bush said in 1990. The following decade seemed to confirm this optimism. Didn’t we quickly slap down the brutal Saddam Hussein and stop his aggression against his neighbors? Didn’t we punish the Serbs for their revanchist depredations in the Balkans? With American military power providing the muscle, the institutions of international cooperation like NATO, the International Court of Justice, and the U.N. Security Council would patrol and protect the network of new democracies that were set to evolve into versions of Western nations and enjoy such boons as individual rights, political freedom, leisure and prosperity, tolerance for minorities, equality for women, and a benign secularism.
The gruesome mayhem of 9/11 should have alerted us to the fact many Muslims didn’t get the memo about history’s demise. Indeed, long before that tragic day in September, we had been serially warned that history still had some unpleasant surprises. Theorists of neo-jihadism like Hassan al-Banna and Sayyid Qutb for decades had laid out the case for war against the infidel West and its aggression against Islam. “It is the nature of Islam,” al-Banna wrote, “to dominate not to be dominated, to impose its laws on all nations and extend its power to the entire planet.” So too the leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the Ayatollah Khomeini: “Those who study jihad will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world,” which is why “Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers.” The kidnapping of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Tehran by a group called “Muslim Students Following the Line of the Imam [Khomeini]” sent us a message that we were engaged in the religious war the jihadists warned would come. But few of those responsible for our security and interests had ears to hear or eyes to see.
Not even when the words became bloody deeds did we listen. The bombing of the Beirut Marine barracks in 1983, which killed 241 servicemen, was supported by Iran and executed by its proxy terrorist group Hezbollah. Our refusal to respond reflected our failure to take seriously Khomeini’s vow to spread his revolution to the whole world. The humiliating televised abuse of our dead soldiers in Mogadishu in 1993, followed by our withdrawal, was exploited by Osama bin Laden in his sermons as signs that America had “foundations of straw.” That same year came the first World Trade Center attack, which killed six and wounded 1,042, an operation inspired by al Qaeda and traditional jihadist doctrine. In 1995 five Americans were killed by al Qaeda operatives at a training facility in Riyadh. In 1996 a truck bomb exploded in front of a residential complex housing Air Force personnel near Dhahran, killing 19 Americans. In 1998 al Qaeda bombed our embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. Twelve Americans died in Nairobi. And the last warning came in October of 2000, when the destroyer Cole was attacked by a fishing boat loaded with explosive. Seventeen sailors died and 39 were wounded.
Yet during these two decades of attacks that proved the jihadists’ words were not just bluster, we did little in response. We interpreted the attacks as crimes, not battles in a war, and reflections of poverty, autocracy, or vague “evil,” rather than as the fulfillment of Allah’s divine commands. Instead, Clinton launched cruise missiles that made a lot of noise but accomplished nothing, limited as those attacks were by timid rules of engagement. His foreign policy was internationalist and idealist, seeing the spread of democracy and the promotion of human rights as paramount in foreign affairs. America’s presence needed to be reduced in the world, and the use of force should be a last resort, and even then carefully calibrated to avoid international condemnation and American casualties. “Dialogue” and “outreach” were preferable, for the jihadists were just defending “traditional values,” as one State Department official said. The wages of that delusion were the burned and dismembered bodies in Manhattan, the Pentagon, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
This history is worth reviewing, for all these mistakes, these failures of imagination, these indulgences of naïve idealism, these sacrifices of our security and interests to political advantage, all comprise the “everything” that 9/11 was supposed to “change.” But here we are, fifteen years later, with a similar history of folly. George W. Bush pursued a delusional program of democracy promotion in Iraq and Afghanistan, with scant appreciation for the profound cultural differences between Islam and the West. But he at least left his successor a stabilized Iraq, which Obama quickly abandoned just to fulfill a campaign promise and assert his progressive bona fides. Then Obama blustered that Syria’s “Assad has to go” and laid down “red lines” that were not to be crossed, only to do nothing when they were serially crossed, and to sacrifice this country’s credibility in his pursuit of the disastrous deal with Iran, our inveterate enemy stained with four decades’ worth of American blood. ISIS was allowed to flourish in the vacuum created by our withdrawal, creating a Hobbesian war of all against all, whose beneficiaries so far have been our rival Russia and our sworn enemy Iran.
Perhaps worst of all, Obama has turned jihad denial into a fatal disease. He is not alone in this delusion, for “religion of peace” and “nothing to do with Islam” have been mantras chanted by our foreign policy savants going back to the Iranian Revolution. No matter that al-Banna, Qutb, Khomeini, bin Laden, Ayman al Zawahiri, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and the mullahs in Iran all have grounded their violence and aggression in Islamic scripture and tradition. Our smug Western analysts and apologists dismiss the jihadists’ exegesis as a “hijacking” or “distortion” of the “true” Islam, presuming to understand the Islamic faith better than pious Muslims do. So we half-heartedly fight an enemy whose name we cannot even say, and whose religion of violence we desperately distort into a religion of peace and tolerance. Meanwhile, like Bill Clinton and now Obama, we use bombs and drones as telegenic marketing tools to hide our failure of nerve and short-sighted political calculations.
So fifteen years later, we still sleep. And don’t expect things to change after November. Neither candidate has shown any indication he or she is willing to make the hard decisions required to destroy ISIS and reaffirm American prestige. Trump issues vague threats about “bombing the shit” out of ISIS, while Hillary chatters about “smart power” and “coalitions,” doubling down on Obama’s failing policy. But no one proposes using the mind-concentrating levels of force, including troops as well as bombs, necessary to repair our broken foreign policy in the Middle East. Too many voters are in an isolationist mood, sick of wars and casualties, and concerned more about jobs and the economy.
The attacks on 9/11 supposedly “changed everything.” When it comes to foreign policy, they didn’t. One shudders to think how much worse the destruction and death will have to be to wake us up.

A Day In The Life
Up at 7am on Friday, temps were in the low-60s, and it would be a nice day. I made coffee, had some OJ and checked the usual news and weather sites, listening for traffic reports on the Labor Day Weekend Holiday traffic. Massive congestion, back-ups, accidents, delays, DUI checkpoints, millions and millions on-the-move, to wherever they're going. I made Poached Egg over Lentils & Portabello Mushrooms, and left at 10 (Chris Plante was subbing for Rush at 12, so he had a sub on his 9-12 show) to run a nearby errand to CVS and get some more sterile pads and Isopropyl alcohol for my wounds. No AC needed, and open windows was nice.
Back by 12, I tuned-in CP subbing on Rush for 3hrs, worked on some of the paperwork/filing pile, and made a Grilled Cheese, Pesto & Turkey. The IndyCar Hitachi at The Glen (NY) Practice was on CATV's NBCSN, and Part 3 (4hrs) of the most amazing and astronomically-expensive, rarefied collections of classics, muscle cars, super cars and motorcycles at the Mecum Auto Auction: Monterey (CA) was featured on CATV's NBCSN, and I couldn't resist watching, and drooling at, all that unobtainable hardware. After going out for a short walk in upper-70s weather, I rechecked the Hurricane Hermine's progress – not affecting us – and tuned into a few Triple D episodes until 11:30.
Sleeping-in until 8 on Saturday morning, cloudy, 66°F, windy and looking like rain, thanks to the hurricane. We're way west, but getting a tiny taste of it. I had OJ, coffee, a muffin and settled-in to watch 3hrs of F-1 Pirelli Grand Prix at Monza, (Italy) Practice on CATV's NBCSN. Around 1pm, I left for some errands, expecting mega-heavy holiday traffic, but it was very light.
Back home by 5, after getting sidetracked by a BBQ-50s Classic Car meet in a local church parking lot, I fetched few day's mail from the CHCA community mailbox, checked the hurricane's track map, evening news and watched a few more episodes of Triple D episodes until 11:30. Lights out.
Up at 7am on Sunday for the 3hr F-1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza (Italy), I could and should have slept a few more hours. My butt was dragging the whole day. With OJ and coffee, I made Spam, Sunny-Side-Up Eggs & Homefries (yes, I like some occasional Spam), and started the loads of laundry. At 68°F and low humidity, I opened-up the condo for some fresh air. After a Turkey Club w/ Fries, the 3hr IndyCar Verizon Grand Prix at Watkins Glen (NY) race was on. After finishing-up the laundry, the 3hr Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway race was on. I caught the evening news and watched a special preview of Discovery's Harley & The Davidsons, Biketacular Preview, until 11:30pm.
On Monday, I slept-in until almost 10am, after waking-up at 2am, 4am and 5am, with night sweats, to get a dry pillow and some SHTF dreams , but it was nice finally being awake. Coffee, V8 and an English Muffin w/ Keller's Butter helped, too. 56°F was like a Fall morning, so I opened-up the windows and let the fresh air thru. I streamed the "Best of" Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, 9-12,and went out to run a few errands; whoops, everything except a few convenience stores, were closed. And traffic was building as folks headed back home to start the shortened work week. I also had a second meeting with one of the new realtors who'd contacted me, but during the meeting, my left hip/leg began hurting, and I cut short the rest of my afternoon, to get home and get some Bayer® 325mg Aspirin.
An ice-pak helped with the pain, but elevating it helped more, as I laid on the LR couch. After the pain abated, I settled-in to watch History's 15 Septembers Later, and 9-11 Attacks: Where Were You?, and Discovery's much-heralded 3-part 2hr Harley & The Davidsons, "Amazing Machine", Part 1/3, until 11pm. Lights out.
Up at 7am on Tuesday, a cloudy, cool 56°F, I had V8 and while I was waiting for the Turkish Coffee to finish steeping, opened-up the condo for some fresh morning air. After scanning the weather and numerous news sites, I streamed the live Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, for a few minutes, and drove to Dad's, so we could get his newly-arrived AT&T LTE-4 B470 clamshell flip phone (free!) activated. That done, I helped Dad with some small projects, and left for a local, high-end auto body shop to get a new leather, power, heated driver's seat searched and ordered, for my Jeep. And then on to a couple of errands I'd missed over the holiday weekend.
Gas and diesel prices at the pump, are up since Friday, August 12th: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is up 16¢ to $2.23/gal, Unleaded Premium (89 oct) is up 14¢ to $2.33/gal, Premium (92 oct) is up 16¢ to $2.53/gal, and Diesel Fuel/Kerosene K-2 is up 14¢ to $2.63/gal.Back by 3pm, I had a Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup, worked on some filing and the pile of mail, did some condo chores, and ordered a lot of items from 3 of my favorite online gourmet shops: the newer Stonewall Kitchen, the original igourmet, and even older Cybercucina. I watched the 6pm evening news, some episodes of Fast 'N Loud, and then Discovery's 2hr Harley & The Davidsons, "Race To The Top", Part 2/3 until 11.
Sleeping-in until 8:30am on Wednesday, I had some OJ, coffee and scanned the news. Three articles hit me like a ton of bricks: idiot dumbasses' article at CNN "Math Is Racist", and "NOAA: Global warming increased odds for Louisiana downpour", and astoundingly, "Dallas Morning News" backs demokkkRAT for first time in 75yrs. Jeeeeeeez; the more crap I read, the worse it got. I amped-up the coffee intake, thinking I was in a bad dream that I needed to get out of. While streaming the live Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, 9-12, I finished-up the last few condo chores, made a Ham & Swiss w/ Lettuce and Tomato for lunch, and started to look at today's and tomorrow's to-do lists.
The doorbell rang, and a neighbor stopped by with one of his new 3 AR-15s, which had repeatedly jammed at the rifle range, over the LD weekend. We took it down in the basement to my workshop, and after a brief check of the feed ramp, I found that a simple polishing with a dremel was all that was needed to remove a small production metal burr in the ammo's path. My neighbor will give me an update after he retries it over the weekend. Temps were already at 92°F, so I stayed-in and listened to the Chris Plante Show Podcast from Tuesday, which I'd missed. The 90s continued into the evening, as I watched the final 2hr part of the series, Harley & The Davidsons, "Legacy", Part 3/3. Lights out at 11pm.
Up at 7 on Thursday morning, I had some V8, coffee and made Sunny-Side-Up Eggs, Sausage & Hash Browns, while listening to the local radio station's news. I streamed the live Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, 9-12, and while browsing some Net news websites, I was floored to learn that "not all people who menstruate are women", the dope-addled dumbshit Libertarian Party candidate doesn't know what Aleppo is, this poor homo lowlife got fired for wearing heels at Vogue Magazine, and the dipshit idiot Green Party candidate was arrested for spray painting graffiti. And Bathhouse Barry 0sambo now has a parasitic worm named after him. SNAFU.
Watch out: fake/bogus recorded calls, claiming to be from "US Treasury and IRS enforcement actions" are circulating, and they are total and complete BULLSHIT. Ignore them; it's scammers, lowlifes, dirtbags and pieces-of-shit calling, NOT the US Gov't. The US Treasury and IRS do not call or email; they write letters. Do NOT call them back, or they'll have your phone number and you'll get billed for hundreds/thousands of dollars in foreign calls you never made. Hang-up on the scumbags.
No meetings or appointments today or tomorrow, and by 5pm, it was a sweltering 96°F outside. I tried to watch the 2hr Mecum Auto Auction: Louisville (KY), but it was a disappointing array of ho-hum, late-model car and truck crap; I passed on it. I watched a PBS Frontline documentary on 9-11, called "The Man Who Knew", streamed the live "Mark Levin Show' while doing a little paperwork, and watched some amazing collections of MOPARS and Corvettes on a special edition of Mecum Auto Auction. Hells bells, it was still 89°F at 11pm, when I took out the garbage, and quit it for the night.
Tomorrow/Friday starts a new week here in the "Journal", and the heat is supposed to break this weekend and be more palatable into next week, but still no rain in sight. The Old Farmer's Almanac isn't optimistic about rain for this region. I'm glad I'm out of the hort-nursery business, but well remember some very dry years in the 23 I was in that field. Nothing scheduled for next week, other than waiting for my Jeep's new front seat mounting tracks and hardware to arrive, so I can get it fixed before Winter arrives.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

Are you truly ready for when, not if, TSHTF (The Shit Hits The Fan). And a lot of my "Journal" Readers have emailed and called me to discuss what preparations they should take for that "coming awful event". Believe me, "it" IS coming. Based upon what's happening around the world and here in the US, I have a terrible, terrible *gut feeling* that TSWHTF (The Shit Will Hit The Fan), sometime in 2014. Don't ask why; I just do.
First, Israel is preparing for war, after being attacked for years on many fronts, and not fighting back as she should have. This war will truly have "Biblical implications" around the world. The Middle East is rapidly-collapsing under the subhuman, murderous muslim/islamic riots (muslim Brotherhood) and rule ("arab Spring"), with world crude oil prices projected to hit $200+/bbl, or even higher into the $300-$400 range,

Tens-of-thousands of websites are devoted to the topic of "survival". Do the same with "You Tube", and watch the thousands of videos. This is *NOT The Phony Y2K Crappola*; this is for real. I said numerous times that Y2K was a waste of time and money to prepare for, and that came true. I'm reading that "survival stores" are reporting a huge upswing in sales and preparations, and for good reason.
I'm also one of the very, very few who "predicted a 9-11 type event", 2 years and 8 months before it happened. Read down that "Journal" entry to the "Scary Stuff" section, and it was done by the subhuman, murderous muslim/islamic shit/filth/trash, NOT the US Gov't as some morons and idiots (Alex Jones & Co), have and still It's interesting you mention when an old paradigm dies and a new one takes its place. There are people who are still connected to the old one and can't conceive of life without that old paradigm. I think you saw that in the Great Depression. A lot of people never recovered from it because once that hit it was the end of their lives. claim. Need I say more about those certifiable and murderous, subhuman muslim/islamist wackos who are determined to kill all of us Proud Infidels?
Am I an "conspiracy alarmist" or one of those "crazed survivalists", sequestered in a Montana, Idaho, Utah or Wyoming compound or bunker? "Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
