Temps have dropped into the mid-80s, with ground temps also coming down and we can get lawnseed to germinate now, and get various jobs completed. The seed won't germinate in temps over 90°F, and it just lays dormant as birdfood. But the continuing severe drought is prohibiting us from digging any established trees, and it looks like we'll have to wait until frost comes, the leaves drop and plants start going dormant. We're 17"+ down on moisture since January, and it's getting worse by the day. I'm seeing a lot of damage through York and Lancaster Counties (PA) and in both Harford and Baltimore Counties (MD), caused by this brutal weather and drought. My business has been, and is being impacted, noticeably.
On Saturday, I went to Al Mediterraneo Restaurant, in Hummelstown (PA) with two friends, and had a wonderful meal and time. Nice change of pace, for me.
A huge, violent weather system moved through the York (PA) area at around 2:10am on Sunday, and the lightening and thunder shook the condo, ¼" hail came down briefly, and dropped ½"+ of moisture. 90% of the steady rainfall was well north of us, but I was very thankful for what little we did get. I got up and watched it pour, smiled, and muttered to myself: "Just what we needed. Thank you, thank you, thank you." I went back to sleep until 11:30am. I later went over to Mom & Dad's for dinner on Sunday; haven't been there in a while, either. And then went food shopping This was my last Sunday off for the foreseeable future, since our once-a-year, 25% Off Nursery-wide Sale starts on Friday, September 1st and I'm back to working 7 days a week. I'm still going to take a weekday off, as I can use the rest. It continued raining, on and off, for the next 2 days, to the north and south of us, but not giving us some more, very much needed moisture in this unending drought. Damn.
After surveying my six 30ft x 100ft Quonsets and one 75ft x 100ft gutter-connected Van Wingerden Main Retail Greenhouse, I've determined that some of the 16 sets of louvre vents, need replacing, after 16 seasons. We're doing mega-lube-jobs this week on each set, but I think that some will need replacing. Time takes its toll on everything, doesn't it?

I watched the FOX-TV series "Vanished" pilot episode on Sunday, from 6-7pm, on FX-CATV. It was okay, but "24" is far, far superior, IMO. As you can now easily tell, I watch very, very little TV, anymore, since it's so-called offerings are mostly junk/garbage/trash/crap/shit/junk and geared to the lowest form of viewership watching such programming. "24", The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, and occasional network specials are my bill-o-fare on TV, these years. I'm mostly glued to Talk Radio's, "The Savage Nation", in the evenings, from 6-9pm. For those who would like to listen to The Savage Nation on weekends, he's available on The Best of Savage, Saturday 6-9pm EST, and Sunday 6-9pm EST. And weeknights, The Savage Nation is on 6-9pm EST.
Nationally, gas prices are down 15 cents over 2 weeks. In the York (PA) area, gas prices at the pumps are also down 15¢+. EG: Unleaded Regular is down 15¢ to $2.69/gal, Unleaded Plus is down 16¢ to $2.79/gal, and Unleaded Premium is now down 14¢ to $2.99/gal. Both diesel and kerosene are stable, at around $2.89/gal. No complaints from me.
Locally, school started for kids in this area, and once again the roads are clogged with yellow school busses. I could have sworn in past years that school started just after the Labor Day Holiday, but this year it's a week early. Oh well, better them than me.

Yes, my new RAID 0+1 Display computer at home, is doing just fine, thankyouverymuch. With 4 x 250 gigabyte hard drives, of 1 terabyte (1 trillions bytes of storage) each, combined storage, 2 GB memory, 4 GB processor, WIN-XP Pro O/S, the cutting-edge motherboard, USBs, and drivers, my unit is (now) second to none, anywhere. That'll change in a few months, and it'll be a dinosaur in 18mos. So marches technology. I plan on keeping this one at least 2 years, BTW, regardless.
Lessee, first it was Cyberia (in '95), then D&E SuperNet, then BlazeNet, then SusCom, and now it's ComCast. I'm not making any changes,as I have my own domain name and a gad-zillion of email addresses with it. I can't remember all the iterations which my ISP has gone through over the past 11 years (I joined the Web, in August '95), but there are many. And it seemed that with each change of ownership, there was a noticeable degradation in the CM (cable modem) signal and customer service, although I had purchased the 'superfast package' for a hefty monthly fee. The new owners, ComCast aren't known for their service, IIRC, based upon some of my customers' comments, who've had them over the years. We'll see what happens as time goes on.
I took Wednesday off, slept-in until 11am, and took a drive into Lancaster County, "Amish Country". I stopped at several large greenhouse operations to see what they were all about, and if they grew and sold wholesale perennials. They didn't; they were all annual/bedding plant operations, and I was disappointed in not being able to find some new suppliers. It was cloudy, very humid and in the mid-80s but a mainly comfortable day, all in all.
In 1989, when I founded, built and opened my 20ac GC&N Complex, it took me 19 minutes to go the 12.5 miles, door-to-door from my condo. Now, 16 years later, it takes me 29 minutes — 10 minutes longer — to go the same distance, due to more traffic lights, new roads and intersections, ongoing construction, housing developments and much more traffic on the roads.
My back pain is noticeably less severe than it was last year, when I had two epidural shots into the spine, but I still get twinges in the early morning hours (getting-up at 4am), so if my day's schedule isn't loaded-up in the morning with appointments or other meetings, I'll get the heating pad on my lower back, go back to bed for a few more hours, and come in by 10am. During the day, and into the evening hours, it's cold-paks until I hit the sack around 10pm. This routine seems to be working fine, for now.
