No sooner had I started griping about the lack of rainfall over the past 18+ weeks, than the skies opened up Thursday evening and deluged us with 2.5-3" of rain. Ponds filled up and overflowed, streets and roads became rivers and plants once again looked refreshed. So much came down so quickly that retention ponds, streams and rivers benefitted; most of the rain became run-off and didn't seep into the ground where it was needed most. No complaints though, we'll take what we can get at this point.
Well, September 22nd came and went without incident. I suspect scenarios like that will become commonplace now, as the Nation is still shellshocked from last Tuesday's (9.11.01) horror.
I had some on-site landscape meetings at customers' homes last weekend, and the traffic was stupefying throughout the metro area: car washes, bake sales, yard sales, auctions and BBQs etc everywhere to raise money for the Red Cross effort in NYC and DC. In 11 years, I've never see it as heavy. Nonetheless, I gave a total of $60 at three locations; I wish I could do more.
Retail traffic was very heavy last weekend the weather was good and thousands of people wanted to take advantage of my once-a-year 25% Off Fall Sale and I was short-handed, once again. We set one day, dollar volume records for walk-in retail sales; so far I see no slow down in the economy, and have had only one customer postpone their landscape job until Spring 2002, because of the September 11th terrorist bombing in NYC and DC. The Dow (DJIA) closed up 368, or 4.5 percent, at 8,603.80 after dropping 1,369.70 last week. The Dow (DJIA) was up as much as 413.51 in the last hour on Monday. Bravo, baby!
Monday evening and Tuesday morning saw a huge and violent storm system blow through the DC-MD-PA-NJ area, spawning several deadly tornadoes on the way. One touched down just 7 miles from the Garden Center Complex, and did some pretty extensive damage. We got just over 1.6" of rain, as it continued into midday Tuesday. Other neighboring areas got appreciably more. Combined with the 3" we had last week, it appears that some ground moisture is finally returning. We're glad for what we've gotten, but could sure forgo the violence in favor of the moisture.
I'm now re-involved with the DEP (Penna Dept of Environmental Protection), the US Army Corps of Engineers and who knows who else on another ongoing pond rehabilitation project. More red tape, delays, rules, regs and paperwork. I thought I quit this shit a week ago? Oh, that was another project.
