i see more and more signs of Winter approaching, every day, but as yet, my nesting pairs of birds haven't found the initial piles of birdseed which I've put-out for them, under the Lath House, outside my westward-facing Office Windows. It's going on 2½ weeks, already. The two large grey squirrels and the chipmunks have found the piles have, but the birds are still AWOL, thus far. Maybe they're laying-in stores of juicy worms and crispy, protein-rich insects, in their nests' "little freezers", for Winter? Heh.
In any case, I now have six 30lb bags of Wildbird Seed® and will continue to replenish the piles, until they find them. Once one of them does locate the feeding pile, the rest will follow, in short order. I'll also get some suet and some Jif p-butter to augment their diets, but finding a suitable, practical, heated water source for them is troubling. The several units which I've rigged-up in past years, haven't worked worth a damn, so I'm still searching for something which will work. With daytime temps in the upper-30s, and nighttime temps now in the mid-20s, water freezes fast and the feathered critters are wary of exposed wires, heating elements etc. So, I'm still looking around on the many websites which cater to birds, for something suitable.
"Finally, my Winter-nesting birds have shown-up to their 'feeding station', under the western Lath House, outside my Office windows."Mirable dictu!® On Saturday morning, dozens of cardinals, junkos, bluejays, nuthatches, bluebirds, swallows and wrens simultaneously showed-up at the feeding area under the western Lath House, to eat. Dad yelled to me from his desk at the front counter, to look-out of the windows, at all the birds feeding, and I immediately refilled their piles of Wild Birdseed, on the ground. The two large, grey squirrels had been run-off by all the hungry birds, and I was elated by all the newfound, feathered traffic. It's going to be a great Winter, now that they're found their food. I'll get some pics of them, as the Winter goes on, and post them here.
There are also a couple of chipmunks living behind several of the stacked-stone walls, and I see them sneak-out and gorge themselves on the available seed piles, in between the birds' and squirrels' feeding routine, and they are truly comical. I wish I could have one as a pet, to carry around in my outer-shirt pocket, and let loose in my office etc, to play & eat. Okay, okay, I know they're "rodents", aka mice/rats but hells-bells, they sure are "cute little pests". In any case, I'm glad to see that the birds are back.

On the way into work, I saw that gas prices at the pump, had dropped another 10¢/gal, in >1 day. Unleaded Regular (87oct) is now at $1.59/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $1.69/gal, and Unleaded Super Premium (92oct) is now at $1.89/gal, with Diesel dropping 9¢/gal, to $2.74/gal. Maybe I was wrong last week, in thinking it'd nearly bottomed-out; there appears to be much more room, in small increments, to go. Is oil going to hit $25/bbl, soon? I truly hope that the scumbags in the oil-producing countries, are "living in abject poverty and misery", as a result of the price decreases, but somehow I don't think so. I'm guessing that they're just "adjusting to millions, rather than billions in revenue", as the rest of us, "just scrape-by". Heh. Screw 'em all, and eat some tainted dogfood, lowlifes. (sorry...)
The occasional customer who comes in during the truncated weekday hours, is mostly looking for windowsill herb gardens and various houseplants, neither of which we have anymore. Both were "financial losers" for me, over the past 18-19yrs, so I ditched them a couple of years ago. If things lose money, then they simply aren't profit centers, and any businessman/woman knows that they must be jettisoned in favor of that which earns revenue, or you won't stay in business very long. Business #101 fact. I usually redirect them to a nearby Tru-Value® or Lowe's®, which can afford to carry the many losers amongst their even fewer (these days) profit centers.
After a 3-4 week prolonged bout with the intestinal flu, I'm finally getting some of my appetite back. My friend and customer, Lee stopped-by last Friday, and we went down to Stewartstown for lunch, to "My Three Sons" Restaurant, which had *just closed*, unbeknownst to me! Hells bells, I was just there a month ago, and had some great 8oz crabcakes and fries. Now, they're gone. So went another 1 mile south to "The Taylor Haus", a southern York County landmark, since the 60s, and had a very nice lunch. My open-faced roast beef sandwich w/ fries and brown beef gravy on "everything", was some good homecooking. The gravy was the "consistency of pudding", and it was wonderful. I managed to finish half of it, and took the rest home for Saturday lunch. Expensive, but well-worth the money. I'll be back, since "MTS" is out of business. Lee's pre-occupied with getting another dog to replace his/his wife's "Tasha", a large grey poodle which he had to put-down last week, since she (no; not his wife) had a crippling stroke. Just as we got back to the GC&N Complex, two customers arrived and I was unable to help them (refer to previous paragraph about herbs/houseplants). I closed-down around 2:15pm and went home.
Saturday was a bitter cold day, with a temp of 16°F and 11°F windchill, it took several hours to get the Main Retail Bldg & Office up-to-temp, so I'd be comfortable. While the massive LPG forced-air heaters were starting to work after I'd gotten-in at 9:45am, I went back out to my Jeep and turned-up the heater, sipped some hot coffee and listened to the radio. I hate the Winter cold. Maybe more than I hate the heat and humidity of Summer. I did paperwork, a customer came in for a Gift Certificate, and I fielded a dozen phone calls, mostly about cut/live Christmas trees, which we don't do anymore. I closed down at 2:30pm and made several errand stops on the way home. It started snowing around 3:45pm, and began sticking to the lawns, driveways and roads, so I know the ground temps are cold enough to accommodate some accumulation. A lot of the frozen moisture was coming out of the Appalachians, and from "lake effect snow", it appeared. The forecast was for 1-2" overnight, and into Sunday mid-day. Nice. Snow takes much of the cold out of the ambient temp, since it takes the cold temps to freeze moisture, and raises the local temps. I took a "long detour" to work, and shot some pics of local road and city areas, covered with snow.
I spent Saturday evening, working on getting the home computer back to "my operational standards", and Jeff emailed me that the mobo (from China) had arrived, but that he wouldn't be able to get over to install it, until December 14th, due to some trade shows, which he and Denies were participating-in. No problemo. He thinks that it'll solve all the problems, and that we're going to convert the formidable RAID 0+1 Array, to a simple single HD operation, with a RAID 0 back-up, and my External WDC 1Tb HD, as main back-up. Fine & dandy, IMO, as long as we get it done soon, and that it works safely and reliably. Okay by me.
I slept-in 'til 10 on Sunday, and after logging-on, noticed a Weather Channel *Severe Weather Warning* for 50mph+ winds and bitter cold temps, through Monday morning. I made a fried egg sandwich, skipped the French Toast and gourmet coffee, and went food shopping. Wowzer; it was nasty outside; 27°F with a 30-50mph wind, made it 10-15°F! I'd forgotten that I still have 5 cases of ammo in the back cargo compartment of the Jeep, so stacking all those bags of ($123.57) groceries was dicey. I was home by 1:30pm, unpacked and decided to stay inside, rather than going for a 30-min walk in nearby Springettsbury Park. Temps started dropping quickly around 4pm, as the sun began to set and darkness prevailed. Within 30minutes, it was 22°F and with the 45mph winds, the windchill was 13-15°F, and everything re-froze very quickly. The "lake-effect snow" wasn't making it down here, but was pelting the Altoona-State College/ Penn State University areas, and then dissipating. But the Canadian "Alberta Clipper" bitter cold was making it down here. Dammit!
In a very different vein, I've started leaving "20% tips to those workers in fast-food joints and drive-thru places", which is completely unexpected, by them. They're stunned and aghast at what I've done, and want to give me my change, but when I augment it with a couple/several of dollars, depending upon my bill, suffice it to say that they're stunned. I love it! I love the look on their faces! I love the wilting tone of their voices, saying, "Thanks". It does my heart good, since they've not experienced this kind of thing, before. Heh. Try it, sometime, and you'll be amazed at the reaction you get! If it doesn't bring a tear to your eye, then you're not *alive*. Between my yearly "$20 (up to a $500 limit) giveaway visits" to The Salvation Army (in York, PA) family shoppers, and the 20% fast-food tipping forays, I'm now getting warm, fuzzy feelings from both. I'm looking for another couple of venues to do that in, during this 2008 Thanksgiving-Christmas Season. Last Friday, when Lee and I went to The Taylor Haus, in Stewartstown for lunch, I tipped 25% and saw the waitress' face when she began clearing the table. I guarantee you that she'd *never had a 25% tip* at that place, in her life; she was stunned. And I loved the look on her worn-and-weathered-face. It was exquisite! I had a tear in my eye, as we left the place, and most of the way back to work. Lee had no idea of what I did, and I'd prefer to keep it that way. I'll go back for another meal, and tip her another 25%, just to reinforce what I did the first time. It makes me feel good to do such things, and despite what various lib-dem trash say about me, I'll continue doing what I feel needs to to be done, in spite of their self-effacing hatred of me and America.
Bitter cold and clear, on Sunday night! I just checked the WGAL Weather and The Weather Channel's maps, and it looks life we're into some very, very bitter weather for Sunday night and the next 1-2 days/nights ahead; dammit. I've closed-up all the north and west-facing blinds, re-checked the outdoor water faucet, changed the furnace micro-filter, and re-checked the garage door/back door/front door etc insulation, the fireplace flu etc. I'm very "air-tight" here, and well-ready for the Winter cold weather.
Another 25°F/ windchill 16°F day on Monday, and it took me almost 2hrs to get warmed-up, after getting into work. I had an off-site late morning meeting, and some errands to run just after lunch, but got bills paid, paperwork done, the 2009 GC&N Calendar (weekly) events started, and will work on that as the days go by. I do a weekly schedule calendar for GC&N activity in MS-Word, since no one publishes anything like what our weekly activity approximates, so it can be posted for the Key Staff and LSCP Foreman, each week. The prep-work is exacting, tedious, laborious and has to be done. I have a template developed and must work thru the days, weeks and months of the year, to set-up the calendar, and then inputting all of our operational activity. Guess who's elected to do it? Natch.
My friends at Freedom Armory called and reminded me that I still had 500-rounds of .308cal ammo sitting there, waiting for me to pick it up, after I'd bought 11,000-plus rounds of assorted ammo, over the past few weeks, both at their store and online. Ammo prices are up 15% in November, alone, and it's going to get much worse. So I went over, oogled all their "new toys", and brought home the errant 500-rounds of .308cal ammo. Otherwise, it was another slow day. I have one more site-visit to make, w/ James or Alan, whomever comes in first and we both have the time to got to a jobsite in North York, to look at Pin Oaks, w/ borers. Exciting stuff. Yawn. But it has to be done, for the product Warranty. Double yawn. Okay, okay, we'll get it done. Plus some other Drip Irrigation jobsite visits. Okay, okay...
Tuesday was like a Spring Day, as compared to the 4-5 previous days, with "balmy temps" near 50°F, a warm rain and nighttime temps in the mid-50s! Mid-50s at night! Un-fricking-believable for early December. Hey, I'll take it. A massive rain front pushed warm air ahead of it, out of the Gulf, thru the Midwest and into the Mid-Atlantic Region, on late Tuesday and thru Wednesday. I shed my heavy Winter parka, and wore just a wool shirt-jac, as it felt much like early Spring. I had 2 large grey squirrels, 3 chipmunks and around 30 assorted birds at the Lath House feeding piles, all day, loading-up. I'd brought-in some week-old bread (not stale or mouldy!) and broke it up and distributed it around the piles of birdseed, so there was plenty of food for all.
Jeff sent me an email from his and Denise's Boston trade show trip, that he'd be back and over on Sunday, the 14th, to finish-up my condo computer "rehab", with the "new mobo" from China, and that a "revised" RAID 0 Array, would be what he'd like to install. He wants to use all 4 of the new Hitachi 250Gb SATA drives, with 1 being the main boot-up drive, and the other 3 in a RAID 0Array, but without redundancy. I'll have to use my external WDC 1Tb as the back-up drive, daily. Sounds okay; not nearly as fast as my former configuration was, but that's okay. As long as we get this machine back to 100% functionality, is really all I care about anymore. I'm tired of the cobbled-together, crippled mess as it stands, right now. Reliability is what I'm after. And I'll go ahead a purchase 2 extra, identical Hitachi 250Gb SATA drives, as back-ups. (sigh)
For my "Winter Project", I'm planning a complete inventory and new pics of my 3-yr old Cannon T-65 Level VII Double-Door Gunsafe (similar to the actual double-door Cannon safes, but almost identical in every aspect), and its contents, beginning next week and continuing for at least a month. I have much paperwork to go thru, to enter into software, pics to take and download into the software and individual records to be done on each and every firearm and ammo caliber, I own. "Things have changed, bigtime" since I bought the safe, brought it home in one of my trucks, unloaded it with my JD SkidLoader's forks, assembled the inside shelves/racks/heater etc, moved it into position inside the Main Retail Bldg, and began filling it up with "toys" and ammo. And it's now time to "document" all the contents' changes, for insurance purposes, as well as my own information. I found some software online to use, will download it, try each kind, make a decision on which to use, and will customize it for my needs. I figure that I can do it all in 5-6 weeks. Maybe.

The *Flood Warnings* and *Winter Storm Warnings* were out late on Wednesday evening, for both the northeastern Mid-Atlantic Region and most of New England, as the massive Gulf storm system just kept coming and coming and coming north. It covered the entire eastern US for almost 2 days. By 10am on Thursday, we'd gotten almost 1" of rain, the GC&N's rain gauge reported. And 1-2" of snow was forecast for Friday morning. Just under 2" of rain by 2:45pm, and still coming down. I'm sure glad it wasn't 5-6°F colder, or we'd have one helluva mess out there. Thank Heavens for "small favors".

You may already have Century Gothic on your Windows-XP machine, and that's almost always used for the body copy or subheads, so grab it, if you don't already have it; you're reading it now. They're free from my website. Grab 'em! Save them to your HD, and install to C:/Windows/Fonts (folder), thru your WIN XP Control Panel > Fonts > File > Install New Font. Simple stuff; just takes a few minutes.
