ffinally, Winter's here and it well-exhibited itself last Friday, in both the seething snow squalls and a pre-Thanksgiving (minor) Winter Storm, primarily made-up of Lake Effect Snow and rapidly-moving squalls through our slim Mid-Atlantic Corridor, which dumped anywhere from 1-15" of snow, in our laps and front yard.
I'd said, weeks and months ago, that we'd be subject to an "early Winter", and in fact, we've now been so "subjected" to it. BFD. I personally got "all-giddy" from the snow on Friday, like I did when I was 4-6-8yrs old, long-time ago.
Why so many drivers get into hasty, stupid-assed "massive fender-benders", and ruin their insurance companies' balance sheets, is beyond me. I see many of those people, parked on the side of the road, cars nastily-crunched, waiting for the cops to come and write-up the accident report(s), and hoping that their premiums won't go-up all that much, this year. On the way into work on Saturday morning, I passed two telephone poles which had been smashed-off at the 3-5ft level, and there were plenty of tire tracks leading to-and-from those trashed t-poles. "Foolish idiots and their cars/trucks, are soon parted".
To that end, I stayed-off the roads during the worst of the season's "first snowfall", last Friday evening, and I was glad I did. It got real ugly, real fast out there on the roads, especially on on I-83 in both directions, and I read about the "carnage', on Saturday.
Instead, I spent some well-deserved time on Saturday, "tracking wildlife footprints" in Saturday's virgin snowfall, at the GC&N Complex. It reminded me of my BSA (Boy Scouts of America) days, back in the late 50s, when we tracked animals and each other, for practice. "Identify, track, follow" them, the BSA Manual said. This time, I carried my trusty sidearm, a Kimber 1911 .45cal ACP "Eclipse Target II", just in case. Back in those "early days" of Scouting, I carried an 8-10" Bowie Knife, but if we'd have run into a bear or cougar in the Wisconsin/ Northern Illinois mountains, we'd have been eaten for breakfast; theirs. (Except that I always carried my .22cal Mossberg target rifle, with a 10x Bushnell scope; but I digress.) That's not a worry, nowadays, with my vastly-increased ***Firepower Repertoire***.
On Wednesday, I got 6 x 30lb bags of "Wild Birdseed" mix, and promptly put-out one 30lb bag in 3 piles, under the west side Lath House, just outside my Office's windows, so I can watch who come to feed, as well as who's feeding, daily. I can also keep a watch on the occasional Red Tailed Hawk who comes to feed upon the birdseed feeders, as his prey, and chase him away while my nesting pairs of birds continue to feed. I don't begrudge the hawk anything to eat; I'd rather he get a nice fat, juicy pigeon/dove from the ir5ksome coveys of them, who visit and clog-up the Lath House area, effectively chasing-away my nesting pairs from their life-sustaining chore of eating/ Winter survival. If I "had my druthers", I'd shoot several of the pigeons/doves and leave them in a separate area for the hawks to feed upon, and give the other birds some peace and quiet from the deadly predators. After several years of experimenting with various methods of keeping water available and unfrozen for the feeding birds, I've pretty much given-up. They'll just have to get water from one of my massive retention ponds, or somewhere else, as the combination of containers and heaters aren't working very well.
When I signed-up for several of the many "wild bird feeding site newsletters", years ago, I somehow was "automatically-enrolled" in the animal right organization, PETA (different site: People Eating Tasty Animals), and am now getting deluged with their wacko newsletters demanding that I not eat chicken, turkey, pork, beef etc anymore. I've put them on a "junk filter" in my Mozilla Thunderbird email client, yet can't resist going to that maniac group's website to peruse what idiocy they're espousing this week. Ha!

Friday morning was the first snow of the season. I always get "giddy" at the first one; don't know why. The Weather Channel Bug in my condo computer's tray was blinking yellow with slippery road warnings, but at 31°F, it wasn't an issue yet.

After checking the weather maps, I was amazed at how much snow/sleet/ice was to the south, even down into the Carolinas. I had at least 2" when I left for work at 7am, and as I got further south, there was less and less accumulated snow. But as the day wore on, it continued snowing and by 10am, there was almost 2" down. By 1:30pm, it was a huge snowstorm, and by 2:15pm, it was over. Another 1-2" and some fenderbenders, de rigeur for the first snowfall. By 4:30pm, severe snow squalls were moving through the area, from northwest to southeast, and affecting the evening commute. I was already home by 4pm, and it didn't affect me. My Jeep was de-icing itself in my condo's heated garage, I had a (gas) fire roaring in the fireplace, the cats were well-fed and laying in front of the fire, and I was busy copying-off folders from the old RAID 0+1 Array, in preparation for Jeff's Monday eve visit to install 4 new HDs, reload WinXP-Pro, and for me to install all the apps and reload the data folders. I dread this project, but once it's over, it's done for another 3-4 years, unless something "catastrophic" happens. The RAID 0+1 Array has been the fastest, most reliable and trouble-free computer I've ever had, but since I didn't buy 2 more identical HDs before those specific WDC units went out of production, I have to start over, and will purchase an additional 2 HDs, for future replacement; count on it. I don't want to go through this entire "Nuke & Re-Pave" crap, again, in 3 or 4 years, if it's required due to a HD failure. So, I ordered 2 additional Hitachi SATA 250GB HDs, as "spares".
Friday was Jennifer's, James' and Seth's last day at work with me, until at least February, 2009. Jennifer and her husband, Dave, another 5-year former employee of mine, have some intensive walk-throughs and are finally-closing on their new $300k+ home, over the

next 5-8 days, so they'll be very busy with lots of details. (Sure wish I could afford a $300k+ house! Am I paying her too much? Nah; she's worth every penny!) James has his 3-year old daughter to raise and a lovely, talented lady friend to court and marry. And poor Seth has a hernia operation coming-up in January, so he'll be recuperating for at least 4-6 weeks. Alan, Arthur & Charlie have another 1-2 lscp jobs to finish-up this week, and some final "winterizing projects" to do around the GC&N Complex, before this "Final Friday", which'll be their last day, taking into account that Thursday is Thanksgiving and we'll be closed, anyway. Me? I have very limited Winter Hours to deal with — Mon - Sat, 10-3; Sunday Closed. — and $28k+ in A/R to get in before Dec 31st, and get the remaining 2008 bills paid, of which there are some substantial ones to deal with. No, no "bailouts" for me, my friends! I've never asked for, and would not accept such "socialist financial" bullshit. I also have to try to get some "new business" into my shop, for the Spring, so I can afford to re-hire everyone, and open the doors, regardless of the continually-tanking economy. other niggling projects, as usual, to do before Spring arrives. Every one of my employees "marvels" at the myriad forms/templates and various pieces of paper which we have on-hand, to *help them/help me, run the business*. Those forms etc aren't available at Staples or Kinkos; I have to "create them from scratch", aka "from whole cloth", tailor-suited to a specific need and task within the GC&N Complexes' many, many operations. IOW, a need for something exists, and I have to create something from nothing. I kind of enjoy doing that, BTW.
It's now time to start laying-in many 30lb bags of "Wild Birdseed", for my feathered friends", who stay on my 20-ac property, all Winter, and who depend upon me to feed them, in the coming, cold and snowy Winter months. (I'll go to Saubel's in Stewartstown, PA, and get 5-10 bags on each trip, for the next 4-5-6 weeks, 1-2x per week) I have several thousand pairs of mating birds, from killdeer to Baltimore Orioles, bluejays, red cardinals, junkos, wrens, barn swallows, goldfinches, gray catbirds, eastern bluebirds, eastern phoebes, cowbirds, flickers, sanderlings, and dozens of other species which I'm just beginning to identify after ~19 years, to feed on a daily and weekly basis. Bob's gone (no, not that; he's into a real banking career), so I now depend upon Jennifer, my Staff Horticuluralist, when she's irregularly-at the 20-ac Complex during the Winter months, doing inventory-entering work on the computers, to help me with ID-ing those many species, who come to feed and nest here, as well as the ones who are simply "passing through" to somewhere else. All the birds deserve a good meal, IMO, and when I have some leftover bread, which isn't stale or especially NOT MOULDY (that nasty bread will sicken and probably kill the birds, and that's NOT my intent, so I throw it away, and will NOT feed it to any animal), I break-it-up and give it to them, daily.

Sure, the resident chipmunks and squirrels feed on it too, and that's just fine-and-dandy with me; they need to eat and survive, too. Occasionally, I'll go buy 3-5lbs of unshelled peanuts, and put-out piles of both peanuts and bread, for the chipmunks and squirrels, and watch them from my Office window, scurrying around, burying all those peanuts, scarfing-down the bread and forgetting (LOL!) where they'd buried the peanuts, for "future retrieval". Occasionally, Red Tailed Hawks visit my western-sited Lath House, and voraciously-feed upon the existing and more docile-feeding birds/chipmunks/squirrels etc, and all I see are piles of feathers, fur and blood, on the next day. Sad, but that's Nature-at-its-pinnacle: "the food chain". Nothing that I can do about that, friends. It's the "food chain", BTW. And if my two condo "pet cat(s)" weighed 300-500lbs, they'd kill me and eat me. Got it? If you "pet dog(s)" weighed 300-500lbs, they'd do the same to YOU! Count upon it.
It finally stopped snowing around 8:30pm, on Friday evening, as I was copying-off the remaining "updated data" on the RAID 0+1 Array's HDs, onto the WDC 500GB External HD, for resurrection on Monday evening, when Jeff gets here and we replace all 4 WDC 250GB SATA HDs with the new Hitachi 250GB SATA HDs. Temps dropped to >26°F, the road slush froze quickly, and fierce new squalls moving through the area made driving "very dicey", with many accidents on the untreated/unsalted road surfaces. I stayed home, and off the roads.
Saturday (10am-3pm) was a dead day at the GC&N Complex; only a few calls came through, primarily asking "winterizing" questions, and with those answered, I finished-up the last of the lscp billing on my desk, and left around 2pm. On the way home, I noticed that gas prices at the pump, had dropped another 8¢/gal, in >2 days. Unleaded Regular (87oct) is now at $1.83/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $1.93/gal, and Unleaded Super Premium (92oct) is now at $2.13/gal, with Diesel at $2.86/gal. Wowser! With the world price of light, sweet crude at under $50/bbl (no relation to pump prices, BTW), I expect it to go even lower in the coming weeks. How long it will last, after the OPEC-scum cut daily production by 3 million-plus bbls/day, is anyone's guess. I also suspect that a lot of previously, gas-conserving Americans, will revert to their "old gas-guzzling ways" and begin to waste a lot more gas, helping to also drive-up demand against a diminished supply, and at-the-pump prices. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
In fact, I'm dreading the Monday eve session with Jeff, of replacing all four 250GB drives, reloading WinXP-Pro, and reinstalling all the apps and data, on my home unit. Although I've been very careful in copying-off all data, there are always "things I miss" in that process, and regret that I didn't "get everything", so I'm spending several hours on Saturday evening, going back through all the folders already copied, and comparing them to what remains on the RAID 0+1 Array HDs. Okay, by Saturday evening, everything current is copied-off, noted and stored on the new, external WDC 1 Terrabyte HD, and ready for Monday's "transfer'.
Around 8pm on Saturday evening, I was coming downstairs and one of my condo cats, Murphy, darted between my legs/feet and I tried not to step on him, but slipped, fell and slid down 6-8 steps, on my butt/lower back. The pain was intense for the rest of the evening, so I took 700mg of Gabapentin (non-narcotic meds) and used a cold-pak on the right lower backside, before going to sleep around 10pm. I was up 3-4x during the night w/ pain and fired-up the heating pad in bed, for the rest of the night's not-too-good sleep.
I slept-in on Sunday morning, got-up at 8am, fed/watered the cats, and went back to sleep until 11:30am. The pain was bad, and everybit as bad as the colorful bruise looked on my backside. I discarded the heating pad, in favor of the cold-paks, which helped somewhat more. Standing mostly on my left leg, I made scrambled eggs with Rutter's Half & Half® and Keller's® Butter — which makes very velvety/creamy scrambled eggs — buttered toast with blueberry & strawberry preserves, and Starbuck's French Roast, Turkish-ground Coffee Beans. For the past 5-7 weeks, I've made 4-5-high stacks of French Toast from scratch, Classic Soft-Boiled Eggs w/Bread-In-A-Bowl, or the wonderfully-Classic Eggs Benedict, so I decided to go "back to basics", since I'd made a Fried Egg Sandwich w/ Butter, Ketchup & whitebread toast, since that's all I had, (here are 326 ways to enjoy simple toast!), on the night before. Mmmmmmmmmm, it all was soooooo good! Next week? Maybe hash browns and corned beef hash? I skipped going food shopping at WEIS Markets, and didn't go over to Mom & Dad's home to visit, before she goes into back surgery, on Tuesday 11/25th, at Hershey Medical Center (Hershey, PA). The pain was just too much, so I called and talked w/ her for 15-20mins. I decided to stay-in all-day with the heating pad/ cold-pak, and not aggravate the problem anymore than necessary.
I emailed Jeff and postponed the RAID 0+1 Array "switch-over" until the following Sunday Nov 30th, since I found so many details of apps, passwords, etc, which I didn't have nailed-down, just yet. I'll have to gather and inventory all my CDs & DVDs from work, to see what I have to reinstall, and also inventory all of the downloaded/stored apps that I have on my external 1-Tb (terrabyte) WDC external HD. I'm just not ready for all this "nuke & repave" of the RAID 0+1 Array, just yet. Plus, Mom has her back surgery at Hershey Medical Center on Tuesday, and I need to be standing-by, in case she or Dad need me, at a phonecall's notice. The following Sunday, will work much better for all the aggravation which comes with an operation such as mine is going to entail. Been there, done that, got a pile of 'those' T-shirts, believe me! I just hope another HD doesn't fall out of the array, or "I'm screwed", according to Jeff. So I'm letting the computer run 24x7, so it doesn't fall-out during the start-up sequence, hopefully. (sigh) I don't need this crap in my life, right now!
On Sunday night, from 8-10pm, the season premiere of "24: Season 6" was on, with a 2hr show called "Redemption", and it was great to see *Jack Bauer* back on the TV line-up. I don't watch much, if any TV — just The History Channel, Discovery Channel, Weather Channel, "FX-TV", "TNT Classic Movie Channel", "24", "Food-TV" and a few misc others — and it was a real disappointment when "24" closed-out last Season 5, and because of (dumbass, shit-for-brains idiot) Kiefer Sutherland's 40-day jail sentence for repeat (3) DUIs, didn't open this Fall with the other Fall shows, and re-scheduled "24" Season 6 to restart, in Jan 2009. Sutherland is "the franchise", after all, and they've built everything around him, obviously. It was good and well-worth the wait.
I was into work around 7:30am, "got things running", and went to the lscp site with my remaining lscp crew, showed them what needed to be done, per my sketch/estimate with the customer's approval, and left for the rest of the day. They took it from there, as usual. Jennifer, Seth and James are now laid-off, as of last Friday, so I'm making things happen in the Main Retail Bldg, and GHs. I truly miss them all, but since there's no work, there's no other choice, at present. I wish I could "be unemployed" too, and collect 65% of of salary; aye, that's the rub. I'm a salaried employee, not an hourly-wage earner. Plus, as a "principal" of the corporation, I can never collect unemployment compensation, ever. BFD.
My remaining LSCP Crew finished-up their final assignment — 1 x 14-16ft "October Glory" Maple, 35 Forsythia "suspensa" shrubs, and 9 assorted pink/blue/white Hydrangeas — on the Met-Ed's right-of-way property line, plus clean-up of the 4-5 dumptruck-loads of wood chips, tree stumps, roots and sawdust. All those new units were installed & mulched, plus watered-in (by Mother Nature on Tuesday), and T&M paperwork turned-in to me, on Tuesday, for billing. That's all she wrote, folks! We're done for 2008!
Tuesday was really the final day for Alan, Arthur & Charlie, as far as LSCP Jobs go; we're done for this 2008 Season. They worked on some "Winterizing Jobs" at the 20-ac GC&n Complex, and will be doing a small Jap Maple transplant/move for Jennifer and her husband, Dave, on Wednesday morning, to dig/move/store several of their precious Jap Maples to my facility for storage, until they can be safely-re-installed to their new $325,000 home (sure wish I could afford one of those!), in the Spring. It was kind of sad to see it all come to an end, BTW.
I had 2-3 relatively-small "Winterizing jobs" to be done at the 20-acre GC&N Complex, on Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday morning, but officially laid-off the final 3-man crew, at 12noon on Wednesday. Alan (my 15-yr Foreman), Arthur (5-yr Ass't Crew Chief) & Charlie (2-yr possible 2009 Crew Chief) have been the "backbone" of the LSCP Division for 2008, and they've carried all the Landscape Work — Seth has carried all of the Hardscape Work — for almost all of this past season, despite the sagging/sinking economy and many reticent customers' decisions. I look forward to their return in March/April 2009, as I'll not need to hire anyone else, even if the economy doesn't improve (which I don't think it will, until sometime in the 3rd or 4th Qtrs); they're ***IT***, for 2009.
Just the other day, I read this utterly-stupid and absolutely-assinine, NY Slime's article, early on Monday morning, and had to re-read it 3-4x, to be sure I wasn't delirious (no high-caffeine coffee, yet), as apparently the writer was, when shit-for-brains "author", Henry Fountain, supposedly wrote it. "Drip Irrigation May Not Save Water, Analysis Finds". Huh? Duh? Is that imbecilic moron pulling my leg/chain or "whatever else"? One of his statements: "Drip irrigation also generally increases crop yields, which encourages farmers to expand acreage and request the right to take even more water, thus depleting even more of it." "Drip irrigation = greater crop harvests = bad thing." Ummm, sure thing, Mr-shit-for-brains Fountain, you liberal-demokkkRAT moron! Read through all the FR.com's posted comments, if you've got a few minutes, and you'll quickly see how idiotic the premise of that hugely-flawed-article, truly is. For a "refreshingly-honest viewpoint", spend a few minutes at my Corporate Website, and read how we've pioneered (mandatory) Drip Irrigation Systems in Landscaping Projects and why we can honestly-claim that We're Green!, at least 12-14 years ahead of everyone else, who now claim that "They're Green". Bullshit on them! We were *there*, many years ahead of those copycat morons!

I spent Wednesday and Friday (Thursday was Thanksgiving Day, and we were closed) ordering various ammo — .308cal 7.62 x 51mm, .357cal Magnum, 3" 12ga .00 Buckshot; and .50cal (non-BMG) 325gr Gold Dot "Beowulf", right now, I have "plenty" of .223cal/556mm, .357SIG — online, and from Freedom Armory in nearby Glen Rock (PA), and was anxious to get all those 5,000-15,000 rounds into my possession, before year's-end, not to mention the Jan 20th Inauguration of B. Hussein Obama-Osama-Rama-Lama-Ding-Dong (Nigga-IL). (((sigh))).
On a cold, rainy, snowy, sleet-filled day, go ahead and download this *.pdf file, — Civil War II: The Coming Break-Up of America —, and spend some quality time on the LR-couch, in front of the roaring fireplace with your cats or dogs, reading this man's novel/fiction opus. It's a great read, IMO, for those of us who dream about "what could be vs what is". I've read it 2x, and will spend some more "quality time", reading it for what it is. Mr Chittum is a very good author, IMO.
To finally have the "2008 Season" come-to-an-abrupt-end, as rapidly-has-it-has occurred since this past Spring, is sort of sad. I will miss all my employees & friends, BTW, for the 2-3-4mos that Winter sets-in, and it takes Spring to re-emerge. Think Vivaldi. I always do (and enjoy Antonio Vivaldi's music, regardless of the selected opus, BTW). My guys spent only 15 hrs/each this week, doing a "final Winterization" of the GC&N Complex, and I printed-out their final paychecks on Wednesday. By 12noon, just about all businesses in York Cty had closed-down, for the T-Day Holiday, and the roads were clogged with people heading home. They don't call it, "Get Away Day", for nothing! I left around 1:20pm, for the day/ following day. Dad called earlier, and he'd already brought Mom home from the Hershey Medical Center Complex, by 11am, after her Tuesday spine operation, and she was recuperating nicely, thankyouverymuch. My Cleaning Service was at my condo, postponed from Tue to Wed, and we had a nice chat while they finished-up, and left for their T-Day Holiday. I opened-up the condo's windows, aired-the-place-out, closed-it-down, then lit a nice, roaring fire in my condo LR's gas fireplace, and curled-up on the LR's King-sized couch/bed with my two "condo cats". The 2½hr nap was nice.
T-Day was nice — I sure hope yours was too! — but different, in that we didn't have a Thanksgiving Day Dinner, as a family, this year. I stopped-over to visit Mom & Dad, around 11:15am, after having slept-in until 10:30. Mom was recuperating from back/spine surgery at Hershey Medical Center, on Tuesday, and didn't have much of an appetite. So I spent around 45mins visiting, so as not to tire-her-out (a small, 1" incision in the lower back, no sutures or staples and a magic, self-dissolving "glue patch" which would disappear in 3-4 weeks with showering; just amazing!), and then went food shopping at WEIS Markets, my usual place on Eastern Blvd, in East York. It was 47°F, and quite "balmy" as compared to the past 5-6 days' weather. Traffic on the roads was almost non-existent, and travel around the area was a relative breeze. I was home by 2:30, unloaded and put-away everything, and started working on some of the Corporate Website Pages, to update them, and get tomorrow's Journal ready for FTP-ing to the website. I'm still getting "prepped" for the (dreaded) 4-HD-swap of the RAID 0+1 Array on Sunday, Nov 30th. I hope I'm wrong, in that everything goes smoothly, but based upon past "nuke & repave" ops, there's always "something" which becomes a sticking point. Light a candle...
My outward email function crapped-out on Thursday afternoon; I could receive (POP3) but not send (SMTP) anything. The SMTP function was somehow 'AWOL', it so appeared, and I had to restart the machine, reboot the cable modem, and... it didn't work, either. My send function was dead-in-the-water, for Thursday, dammit. After cleaning the laser sight, mousepad and USB receiver-off, numerous times, it still wouldn't function correctly, making using a mouse truly a nightmare. Plus, all my keyboard shortcut functions were disabled, as well. I foresee a new Logitech MX3200 Laser Keyboard & Mouse, in my very near future! A second reboot did the trick, and all functions were back. I still had 3 email drafts in the "Drafts Folder", which remained unsent, so I C&P them to a NotePad file, carried them to work and sent them from there. Now, I'm using my ISP's email function, directly on his server, to send/receive email. bear with me until I get this mess fixed, will you?
In case you didn't receive any emails from me on Thursday, it was because my outgoing/SMTP email function wasn't working, and I had 12-15 emails in the "Drafts Folder", waiting to be sent. By 6:30pm, I was still trying to figure-out why it wasn't working, dammit!

Grassley, a Republican from Iowa. Dr. Goodwin, a former (and criminal, corrupt) director of the National Institute of Mental Health, is the first media figure investigated. Goodwin is filth, shit, trash, garbage, crap, junk, scum and a serial LIAR! He needs due-charging, trial, conviction, sentencing and to be stood against a wall, and shot; no, skip that. He needs life in prison, within the murderous, raping GP (general population), IMO. His nightly screams should be heard at last 2-3 miles away from the prison site. Many Journal entries are best viewed in the Charrington Roughened and the Orlando typefaces. You may already have Century Gothic on your Windows-XP machine, and that's almost always used for the body copy or subheads, so grab it, if you don't already have it; you're reading it now. They're free from my website. Grab 'em! Save them to your HD, and install to C:/Windows/Fonts (folder), thru your WIN XP Control Panel > Fonts > File > Install New Font. Simple stuff; just takes a few minutes.
